Jazz In Pink Ft. Gail Johnson

Expansions / Glow

Piano virtuoso Gail Johnson’s stunning reimagination of "Expansions" celebrates the 50th anniversary of Lonnie Liston Smith releasing his groundbreaking epic classic. His revolutionary fusion of jazz-funk & soul with a cosmic message was hailed as an instant classic when released in 1975. Since then after being adopted across diverse dance music genres it has become an anthem of anthems.

Gail grew up listening to Lonnie’s music on Quiet Storm radio in Philadephida. After attending his concerts she began jamming with the great man and they became friends. Now based in Los Angeles and leader of all female jazz outfit Jazz In Pink she came up with the idea of paying homage to and reinventing "Expansions".

'I decide to cover one of his many compositions and "Expansions" spoke to my spirit. As a smooth jazz artist I was able to slow the tempo down and reharmonise some of the chord voicings and play his vocal melodies as a piano lead. The bass line is infectious and carries the groove, accompanied by a four on the floor beat, a little wah guitar and the reimagining began…'

Covering a song as sacred as "Expansions" could be regarded as heresy but when it is recreated with such reverence as this it simply adds to the legend.

On the flip she turns her attention to "Glow", off the same LLS LP. A smoooooth as you like jazz-funk / lounge number with sublime piano, vibes and guitar interplay.

Simple unmissable!

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Two Lonnie Liston Smith tracks are covered by Jazz In Pink in fabulous style. "Expansions" has a hint of house to it (making it a perfect crossover tracks for the dee-jay); while is pure, feel-good jazz-funk with slight lounge moods.

The Sharpees

Go On And Laugh / Tired Of Being Lonely

There are very special records that achieve mythical status amongst collectors and vinyl diggers. The Sharpees - "Go On And Laugh" is top of that tree. Welcome to the strange world of nothern soul!

The story began some years ago when legendary UK record dealer John Anderson discovered an acetate in Chicago with the record title "Go On And Laugh" scrawled on it but no artist name. He sold it to cutting edge northern soul DJ John Vincent who credited the track to The Just Brothers when playing out.

The acetate, by now popular amongst the rare soul cognoscenti, was traded back to John Anderson who passed it on to Mark Dobson, aka Butch. His DJ sets around the world made it an in-demand dancefloor filler and a subject for many years of much conjecture as to the ID of the mystery artist who had recorded this masterpiece which was not just a one-off uber rarity but also the epitome of nu-northern soul cool.

Fast forward to 2016 when USA record label Secret Stash gained access to 200 plus master tapes recorded in the 1960’s by the Windy City’s One-Der-Ful set up. They were forwarded to UK Soul entrepreneur Mark Bicknell who to his amazement found "Go On And Laugh" in the haul. And finally the whodunit mystery was over with the artist identified as The Sharpees, who far from being obscure unknowns are fondly well known in soul circles for their much loved "Do The 45" and "Tired Of Being Lonely" singles. Secret Stash promptly issued "Go On And Laugh" in America but demand far outstripped supple and it quickly sold out with copies now fetching northwards of £150.

Anorax - living up to its #eatsleepcollect mantra - have snapped up the rights and are delighted to issue it as a 500 run limited edition 7”.

"Go On And Laugh" is coupled with the timeless classic "Tired Of Being Lonely". It follows the release by Anorax of gems from Drizabone, Jay J Feat and Don Carlos.

It’s stating the obvious to say that "Decide" is a top tier soulful house BOMB! The combination of Jay-J’s precise but haunting San Francisco production, Big Brooklyn Red’s life affirming vocals and the truly awesome remixes from the late Ethan White (R.I.P) together conjure up a masterpiece that defines the genre.

The remixes from Ethan, the co-founder and keyboard player of Tortured Soul have up till now only been available on digital release. Jay-J (Joseph John Hernandez) dug into his Shifted Music vaults to come up with the original 2009/ masters for this limited edition 7” release.

"Decide" is an affirmation who believes that true house music is a spiritual thing.

Drizabone

Pressure - Inc. Nu-Solution AKA Roger Sanchez Remix)

The brand new Anorax label’s mantra is #eatsleepcollect - which makes its’ debut release right on point.

Drizabone’s anthemic “Pressure” has become a huge collectors want, with appeal to modern soul fans, northern soul followers and house addicts via the much loved Roger Sanchez remix.

Drizabone burst on to a dazzling British soul scene in the early 1990’s, following the footsteps of Soul II Soul and Loose Ends, rubbing shoulders with the likes of The Brand New Heavies as UK acts laid down their own distinctive soul DNA.

After debuting with “Real Love” which went from a mystery white label to a chart smash, Drizabone went on to record the iconic “Conspiracy” album.

“Pressure” has endured like fine wine and is now hailed as an all time classic.

Anorax present the very in-demand original backed with Roger Sanchez’s Nu-Solution remix on limited edition 7 inch single.
