Amy Dabbs puts her heart and soul in the breaks anthem ‘Everything Alright' feat. Aika Mal’ on her Heist debut EP.
Bonus: A tantalizing 140BPM Dam Swindle remix

Berlin based Amy Dabbs has already impressed, with releases on Aus Music, Shall not Fade and her own Dabbs traxx, a monthly residency on Rinse FM and an active tour schedule that's won her fans from dancers and DJs alike; with Special Request, The Blessed Madonna, Jaguar and Cinthie all waving the flag for this up and coming artist.

Right from the start, you know you’ve got an anthem on your hands with ‘Everything alright’. The gorgeous vocals by Aika Mal give you that right amount of emotive, ravey energy and come wrapped in a package of solid breaks and mesmerizing chords. With a hint of acid and a couple of meticulously crafted breakdowns you’ll be fist-pumping along with this track before you know it.

The Dam Swindle remix drops the tempo a little bit, but with its 140BPM, warm broken beat and UK bass flavours, the duo delivers a curveball of a track with a lot of crossover appeal. They went for a more stripped back approach that combines introverted percussion with bouncy keys that complement the vocals perfectly for an altogether irresistible remix.

‘Crush’ is a signature Amy Dabbs tracks, with driving 909 percussion, female vocal chops, ethereal pads and classic strings. It’s a warmhearted affair laced with Amy’s feelgood DNA. On the flip you’ll find ‘Eleven eleven twenty two’; a classic deep house track with subtle hints of UKG in its sampling and bass. The pads and leads are moody and the skippy percussion gives this track the kind of energy you’d welcome when pulling an all-nighter.

Rounding off the EP, we’ve got the EP title track ‘Only Breaks Can Love Your Heart’; another showcase of Amy’s knack to make house aficionados dance to drum and bass. There’s a certain contrast in pace – raging drums versus dreamy chords that makes you feel at ease listening to a fast-paced track like this. The vocals are equally hazy with a subtle 90’s and 00’s RnB feel. Bassface guaranteed on this one!

    STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Anthemic, future-proof bass hybrids from rising star Amy Dabbs. Touching on garage, bassline, DnB and techno styles in her own sugar-coated, hyped-up manner.

Amy Douglas delivers the goods with this fiery 7". Known to the heads as a voice and pen behind Horse Meat Disco, Roisín Murphy, and as the face of Hard Feelings (her project with Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard), Amy’s distinctive vocal swagger and songwriting talent are on full display. Co-written with and produced by RNT co-honcho JKriv, both tracks are bass heavy instant earworms, and wickedly naughty party starters.

      At The BBC

‘At The BBC’ is the anticipated reissue from Amy Winehouse, originally released as a box set in 2012 this is the first time that the two discs ‘A Tribute To Amy Winehouse by Jools Holland’ and ‘BBC One Sessions Live at Porchester Hall’ are combined together to create this incredible masterpiece. The first time the tracks are available on vinyl, the set features tracks from Later with Jools across the year from 2003-2007 feature the most renowned tracks such as ‘Tears Dry On Their Own’, ‘Rehab’ and ‘Love Is A Losing Game’. And notably Amy’s first performance on the show in 2003 with ‘Stronger Than Me’. This is an essential listening and a celebration of the icon which is Amy Winehouse.

        STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: There's very little that needs saying for this. Amy Winehouse has left more of an impression on the landscape of singer-songwritery than pretty much any artist I can think of, and this soulful collection of her various BBC and Jools Holland appearances sees her in absolute peak form. As mindblowing as it is heartbreaking, the stripped-back perfection displayed here couldn't be any more of a testament to the enduring appeal of Winehouse, and to have it all in one place is perfect.

A Seat At The Table : Interviews With Women On The Frontline Of Music

Writer and critic Amy Raphael has interviewed some of the world's most iconic musicians, including Courtney Love, Patti Smith, Bjoerk, Kurt Cobain and Elton John. In 1995 she wrote the critically-acclaimed Never Mind the Bollocks: Women Rewrite Rock, which included a foreword by Debbie Harry. More than two decades on, the music business has changed, but the way women are regarded has not.

In this new book, A Seat at the Table, Raphael interviews eighteen women who work in the music industry about learning to speak out, #MeToo, social media, queer politics and the subtleness of everyday misogyny. Featuring interviews with: CHRISTINE & THE QUEENS, IBEYI, KATE TEMPEST, ALISON MOYET, NADINE SHAH, JESSICA CURRY, MAGGIE ROGERS, EMMY THE GREAT, DREAM WIFE, NATALIE MERCHANT, LAUREN MAYBERRY, POPPY AJUDHA, KALIE SHORR, TRACEY THORN, MITSKI, CATHERINE MARKS, GEORGIA, CLARA AMFO

            Amy Studt

            Happiest Girl In The Universe

Singer, songwriter and multi instrumentalist, Amy Studt has announced that she will release her eagerly awaited new album via the Crocodile Laboratories label on the 4th of October 2019. ‘Happiest Girl In The Universe’, recorded with Hatcham Social’s Toby Kidd, features eleven bold, intimate and heartfelt tracks including the acclaimed singles ‘Sleepwalker’ and ‘I Was Jesus In Your Veins’ together with the albums eponymous titled closer . Haunting cinematic pop that recalls the drama of the late Scott Walker, the new long player is a narrative diary of depression, hope and redemption and is without doubt one of the most personal and innovative collection of songs that is likely to surface this year.

“This is the work of an artist genuinely using their chosen medium to explore and make sense of their life experience. There’s certainly nothing glamorising suffering here”. Aural Aggravation. With parents who are both accomplished classical musicians, Amy Studt’s future as a performer was always inevitable and from an really early age she was a proficient pop musician, playing piano, oboe and guitar. A special talent, at a mere fourteen years of age she was signed to Simon Fuller’s roster of artists and then quickly picked up a deal with Polydor Records. At 16 she released her first single, ‘Just a Little Girl’ which charted at number 14 in the UK pop charts and reached number 1 on US radio play. Her second single ‘Misfit’ reached number 6 and this was soon followed by her debut album ‘False Smiles’ which went on to sell 260,000 copies.

Leaving Polydor in 2004 at the age of eighteen years, Amy stayed out of the public eye for a while, but in 2006 it was announced that she was working on a new album and she’d re-signed to Simon Fuller’s new 19 Entertainment Indie label. A new album ‘My Paper Made Men’ was released in 2008 and after a couple of more singles and the album becoming a cult collectors item, Amy again withdrew from the limelight to a cottage in the countryside. Shying away from the spotlight and constant touring, she built her own recording studio and spent time playing the odd low-key show and writing and recording the songs that have eventually formed the ‘Happiest Girl In The Universe’ record. Returning with a darker and more soulful sound, she is one of the most innovative artists around and is creating some of the most beautifully and inspirational music in the UK right now. “Studt’s always had an exceptional voice and she blows us away with her control and heartfelt emotion with a pure raw vocal which sounds beyond beautiful”.

              STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Studt has crafted a beautifully rich, thematically interesting album full of optimistic twists and turns. Despite the serious subject matter, she manages to inject the music with an honesty and vigour that only comes from someone really engaging with their chosen medium. 'Happiest Girl In The Universe' is a wonderfully written and beautifully accomplished LP.

              Amy O

              Elastic

It’s either her second album or her ninth, depending on how you count, which means Amy O is both a new artist and a veteran. Growing up in Fayetteville, Arkansas, she taught herself to play guitar and write songs, eventually recording a series of lo-fi albums as she moved around the country for college and work. The endeavor was more about her own experience: the thrill and the discipline of making art. “Songwriting became a way for me to process things and make sense of my life. I got hooked on it emotionally.”

Today, Amy’s songwriting processes remains the same. ‘Elastic’ is an album about learning to live in your own inescapable skin—a challenge that defines not just Amy’s life, but everybody’s existence. Identifying that universal truth has shaped Amy into an exciting and insightful artist, one who is no longer making music for herself but is working to command whatever stage she steps onto. “I always had an aversion to being a girl onstage with a guitar singing quiet songs. There’s nothing wrong with that at all, but I always knew I wanted to do something with a bit more volume, a bit more anger. I’m just now figuring out how to represent myself, and I think a lot of that has to do with feminism—learning how to be loud and take over a room, when those are things I’ve been socialized not to do. It’s been a very powerful realization that I can do that.”

                Amy Winehouse

                Frank - 180g Vinyl Edition

Years before Amy Winehouse garnered international attention with 'Back To Black', the sassy soul singer put herself on the UK music map with her 2003 debut, 'Frank'. Nominated for the prestigious Mercury Music Prize, the record glides along on the subtly jazzy production of Salaam Remi, which allows Winehouse's expressive voice, strongly influenced by Billie Holiday and Dinah Washington, to shine, particularly on the downbeat 'Stronger Than Me', "Take The Box" (which made it onto Gilles' "Worldwide 2" compilation), the powerful 'You Sent Me Flying', and the sultry 'I Heard Love Is Blind'. It's an impressive debut, fusing soul with jazz, hip hop, reggae and Latin flavas, all topped off with her distinctive soul-jazz vocals.

                  Amy Winehouse

                  Back To Black

Three years on from her debut "Frank" and all the acclaim she got back then, 2006 sees Amy Winehouse back at the centre of media attention with its follow up, and especially inspirational new single "Rehab" which kicks things off here too. Bracketed in with the nu-soul singers back then, Amy always had more of a jazz edge to her songs, and especially her voice which sounded like it should be coming from a 50-year-old black American singer, not a skinny white Londoner. With "Back To Black" she takes a trawl through the sound of 60s soul, girl group pop and the kind of laid back torch song crooning favoured by the mafioso of old, all given a totally modern twist by her smart confessional lyrics. This all comes backed by The Dap-Kings and features lush orchestration too, with production by Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi. ESSENTIAL!!!
