Adrian Sherwood & African Head Charge & Speakers Corner Quartet

Barbican Heights

Following on from this year’s critically acclaimed ‘The Collapse Of Everything’, Adrian Sherwood teams up with Speakers Corner Quartet and African Head Charge for new four-track EP ‘Barbican Heights’, a project which traverses the musical worlds of dub, jazz, electronic, Afrobeat and beyond.

Recorded during a singular day of creative spontaneity at Wicker Studios, the three acts, alongside Alex White of Primal Scream and Fat White Family, combined for semi-improvised reworkings of classic African Head Charge composition ‘Wicked Kingdom Of This Earth’ and Speakers Corner Quartet’s own ‘Topanga’, as well as two new tracks constructed from scratch during the session.

Produced by Adrian Sherwood, mastered by Frank Merritt at The Carvery Studios and released as a 12” vinyl EP with printed outer sleeve and labels.

Nightmares On Wax Vs Adrian Sherwood

In A Space Outta Dub

An inspired coming together of musical minds. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of 'In A Space Outta Sound', George Evelyn aka DJ E.A.S.E has handed over the tapes to dub maestro Adrian Sherwood to go on a heady version excursion with eight tracks from the original record, in the spirit of the reggae and sound system roots that informed the original album. The result is a fresh take on a much-loved classic, in the lineage of albums such as Massive Attack’s 'No Protection' and Spoon’s 'Lucifer On The Moon'. Features bold new re-works of iconic tracks such as 'You Wish' (appearing here as 'You Bliss') and 'Flip Ya Lid' (mutated into 'Flippin Eck'). As well as his trademark mixing desk wizardry, Sherwood has also brought in some of the core On-U Sound players to add additional instrumentation and turn this collaboration into something which is much more than the sum of its parts.

STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Well well well, if it isn't two of the most legendary figures in their respective (and closely linked) genres working together and forming something that's far different from their original output! This is peak Sherwood, reworking one of the great albums of our generation. Classic sounds, classic motifs and an absolute boatload of skill and passion.

Adrian Sherwood

The Collapse Of Everything

After previewing new solo music with June’s four track EP The Grand Designer, Adrian Sherwood delivers a brand new full-length work, The Collapse Of Everything, his first solo album since 2012. A meticulously constructed album from the master producer and mixologist, Sherwood pushes his ever adventurous sound into new frontiers. Although underpinned by a natural dub sensibility, the music presented on The Collapse of Everything fluidly crosses genre borders and seamlessly fuses a wide range of influences from a lifetime of listening and producing.

Although Sherwood has been extremely busy in the last few years working with other artists; from remix work for pop artists such as Halsey, full length critically acclaimed dub reconstructions for indie-rock titans Spoon, and Panda Bear & Sonic Boom, or producing critically acclaimed late career albums for reggae icons Lee “Scratch” Perry and Horace Andy (“Midnight Rocker” was heralded the Guardian’s #1 Global album of 2022); Sherwood has not released an album as a solo artist since Survival & Resistance, released almost to the day, 13 years ago.

STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Though we've not been without hints of Sherwood's unique dubby outlook (he's just not been sitting about), it's been a long time since a full album from him and 'The Collapse Of Everything' provides the perfect return for one of the most innovative and creative musicians and producers in the world. Absolutely stunning progressive, dub-adjacent pieces studded with huge guests too (Brian Eno on 'vocals'!)

Adrian Sherwood Presents: Dub No Frontiers

Dub No Frontiers is inspired by and features female vocalists that Adrian Sherwood and the On-U Sound label knew from the UK or had met while travelling around the world. Many of the singers said they felt the dub and reggae arena was a bit of a male preserve and a little intimidating even, so Sherwood decided to invite artistes to perform a song of their choice, all in non-English on his rhythm tracks. Vocalists include Likkle Mai (singing in Japanese), Rita Morar (Hindi), Kerieva (Romani), Neyssatou (Arabic) & Yehaiyahan (Chinese).

The album is dedicated to the memory of both Ariane ‘Ari Up’ Forster and Lincoln Valentine ‘Style’ Scott with whom the project started.

Peter Harris’s cover painting of Afeni Shakur Davis sets the visual tone of the record and both the LP and CD come with a 12-page booklet featuring more of his paintings of inspiring women from the world of literature, politics, law, civil rights and medicine, such as Claudia Jones, Flo Kennedy, Barbara Jordan, Claudette Colvin and Mary Seacole.

Adrian Sherwood

Survival & Resistance

For more than three decades, Adrian Sherwood has been one of the World’s finest and most consistently groundbreaking producers, artists and remixers. He has wrought his magic upon such artists as Nine Inch Nails, The Cure, Blur, Primal Scream and Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, as well as coining new sounds with legendary acts such as Tackhead and Mark Stewart. As label boss and producer for the legendary On-U Sound label, he has brought music to the world from New Age Steppers, African Head Charge, Gary Clail and Dub Syndicate.

Now comes Adrian’s third solo album, ‘Survival & Resistance’. Dark atmospherics, creeping electronics and an almost orchestral approach to arrangement are married to brilliant melodic sense.

Drawing on the upheaval of the all-too-recent London riots and staring down the current international economic crisis, the album is an earnest critique of current injustices, and like all great dub music is also potently enjoyable. Echoes of the UK’s hyperactive electronic underground can be heard through the album, and Sherwood’s recent time spent with such young luminaries as Kode 9, Pinch, Digital Mystikz and The Bug have no doubt played an energizing role. However, even stronger is the post-punk lineage of the On-U aesthetic and the mythical mixing approach he has evolved over the years. A swirling maelstrom of skull-shaking, heavy electronic tones and masterful deployment of breathing space and alien echo, ‘Survival & Resistance’ is the sound of avantgarde dub music in 2012.
