No New York : A Memoir Of No Wave And The Women Who Shaped The Scene

Downtown NYC of the mid-1970s and early 80s was the perfect landscape for reinvention. If the Lost Generation writers telegraphed the death of the American dream, the No Wave era, led by artists including Teenage Jesus & The Jerks, Nan Goldin, Sonic Youth and the Contortions, challenged that dream by howling "NO" while creating a counterculture that brought punk, rock, jazz, funk, the art world, hip hop, and outlaw literature together into an international explosion of creativity. Why was this scene so compelling, and remains so today? What set this confluence of time, place, and people apart from the rest? The answer, in a word: women.

Women, resisting stereotypes. Reinventing themselves according to their individual artistic visions. Adele Bertei was a pivotal figure in the No Wave movement.

She was an original member of the Contortions and Brian Eno's fascination with the band resulted in the seminal No New York record, released in 1978. NO NEW YORK: A Memoir of No Wave and the Women Who Shaped the Scene will provide an uncompromising testimony to the first significant, international movement of women artists creating work on an equal footing with the men, the fruits of which were some of the most striking and unique of this era.

    Metanoia EP

Metanoia is the debut EP from the East London-based trio Adele Dazeem. Formed in 2020 by singer/guitarist Charlie Hearl, bassist Philippe O’Connor and drummer Frank Andrews, they have developed a sound that fuses a cutting urgency with ethereal ambience. The name comes from an infamous John Travolta mispronunciation – seemingly in contrast to the weight of their music – but the idea of a simple misread name became the starting point for their creative exploration of identity, ego, attachment and the different parts of ourselves. This explains why – alongside Sigur Rós, Weyes Blood, Deerhunter, Ulrika Spacek, Duster, Deafheaven and Beach House – they list psychologists, writers and thinkers among their influences, including Erich Fromm, RD Laing, Donald Winnicott, Ernest Becker, Susan Sontag, Melanie Klein, Hannah Arendt and Victor Frankl. As their first body of work, Metanoia – produced by mixed by Rory Atwell – traces an inner journey from darkness and emotional dissonance to confrontation and eventual transformation across its four stunning tracks. With origins in Ancient Greek philosophy and Christian mysticism, the title roughly means ‘a change of mind’, or the moment when psychological collapse becomes clarity. Opening with the frenetic ‘Misère’ – named after a play in cards where you self-sabotage and attempt to lose every trick – it moves into the epic ‘Deep Sea Hand’ which, five minutes in, speeds up and opens out in a hopeful moment of pure release. The intense ‘Mezanin’ explores the discomfort of awakening without action, the moment when awareness begins to surface, leading into the title track.

30 is the first new music from Adele since the release of her third studio album 25 in November 2015. The album is produced with former collaborators Greg Kurstin, Max Martin and Shellback and Tobias Jesso Jr., as well as new collaborators Inflo and Ludwig Goransson.

        STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Adele is back! This time following her naming convention from 21 and 25, bringing in a more mature and thematically rich selection of heartfelt balladry on the wonderful '30'. It's not particularly my cup of tea, granted but there's no denying she's a hugely talented and important artist and this is definitely the best work of her career.

“My last record was a break up record and if I had to label this one I would call it a make up record. I’m making up with myself. making up for lost time. making up for everything I ever did and never did.”

So says Adele about her new long player '25'. "Highly anticipated" doesn't quite cut it, with the video for lead single 'Hello' clocking in at 404,293,556 views the last time I looked (and undoubtedly more by the time you read this). '25' might be the event record of 2015, but really it's a continuation of the sound that brought '21' 9 x platinum global sales. The intimate piano ballads, epic swelling choruses, R&B pop hints and BIG production are all present and correct on '25', along with the emotional catch in Adele's voice - the thing that lifts her head and shoulders above all the melisma-ing X-Factor wannabes. The album features co-production from Greg Kurstin, Tobias Jesso Jr ('When We Were Young'), Danger Mouse ('River Lea') and Swedish pop svengalis Max Martin & Shellback ('Send My Love (To Your New Lover)')

About its release Adele says 'I'm very excited, nervous, eager, anxious but chuffed to announce my new album! It's taken a while and it knocked me for six when writing it. It's different from "19", it's about the same things but in a different light. I deal with things differently now. I'm more patient, more honest, more forgiving and more aware of my own flaws, habits and principles. Something that comes with age I think. So fittingly this record is called "21". The whole reason I called my first album "19" was about cataloging what happened to me then and who I was then, like a photo album you see the progression and changes in a person throughout the years.'

Most of the album was made in Malibu with the legendary Rick Rubin (Johnny Cash, Jay Z, Red Hot Chilli Peppers) and back in Kensal Rise in London with Paul Epworth (Plan B, Bloc Party, Florence). Adele cites Wanda Jackson, Yvonne Fair, Andrew Bird, Mary J Blige, Mos Def, Elbow, Tom Waits and Kanye West amongst others as key influences on "21".

Critically acclaimed by many of her musical contemporaries, Adele well and truly made her mark with "19". Chapter two begins here.
