Lathe Of Heaven

Aurora

Lathe of Heaven return with their second full-length album Aurora, a bold expansion of their sonic and thematic palette that unfolds like a series of vivid, emotional vignettes.

Aurora is an iteration of Lathe of Heaven’s sound previously unexplored, one that offers a delicate balance of their punk roots with captivating new-wave and 80s post-punk aesthetics, incorporating influences from mid 80s British and Finnish post-punk, combined with subtle nuances from 90s and contemporary under-ground pop. Recorded with Ben Greenberg at Circular Ruin and mastered by Brad Boatright, the album sonically is inspired by The Cure’s melodic rock, Musta Paraati’s gothic post-punk synth and intense drumming, and A Flock of Seagulls’ art pop vocals and guitar riffs. Lyrically, Aurora doesn’t shy away from heavy themes. Envisioned as a collection of sci-fi short stories, it is deeply influenced and lyrically driven by themes of anti-colonialism, diversity, and equality.

These stories are inspired by Ursula K. le Guin, Octavia Butler, Greg Egan, and Peter Watts’ novels, leading listeners to mythical, bold, and somewhat unnerving realities. The title track, “Aurora,” is set in a dystopian future where Earth is long abandoned due to nuclear fallout - it ex-plores themes of loss, love, and devotion. “Oblivion” delves into the phenomenon of semantic satiation - say a word enough times and it begins to lose its meaning.

“Exodus” reimagines Theseus’ Ship Paradox, narrating the experience of transferring consciousness into a new, perfect body. Elsewhere, “Portrait of a Scorched Earth” stands as a direct act of resistance. One of the most emotionally raw songs on the album, it breaks from the band’s usual lyrical abstraction as an unflinching reckoning with the horrors of modern warfare and displacement, rooted in the lived tragedy of Gaza.

Lathe of Heaven hope Aurora elicits a vast spectrum of emotions, and inspires deeper reflection on the state of our reality and humanity. It is literary without being pretentious, political without preaching, and emotional without flinching. Every song holds a piece of a shattered mirror and what emerges is a prismatic, wounded beauty, staring back with a thousand faces. Set to be released August 29th, 2025, Aurora stakes its claim; “tremble without fear into dreamless oblivion.” You are invited.

Ben Frost

Aurora - 10th Anniversary Edition

In celebration of its 10th anniversary, renowned Iceland-based Australian composer Ben Frost releases a limited edition red vinyl of his studio album, 'Aurora', on Mute.

Limited to just 300 copies in the UK, this vinyl edition includes alternative artwork and an exclusive download of his blistering 2014 live performance at Berlin’s Berghain.

'Aurora', which has lost none of its visceral potency in the intervening years, received universal acclaim and featured in Albums of the Year lists at NPR, Rolling Stone, Clash, Crack, FACT, Stereogum, and more.

Performed by Frost along with Greg Fox (ex-Liturgy), Shahzad Ismaily, and Thor Harris (ex-Swans) and largely written in Eastern DR Congo, the album is wholly absent of guitar, piano, string instruments and natural wooden intimacy, offering a defiantly synthetic world of fiercely shaped sounds and galactic interference, pummelling skins and pure metals.

Sarah Belle Reid

Mass 2024 Reissue

Canadian performer and composer Sarah Belle Reid’s 2021 acclaimed album, first time on vinyl, expanded with two new incredible songs, remastered featuring new artwork.

From distant ocean song to the clang and howl of a murky forgotten memory, MASS is a dreamlike collage of shrill shrieks, gasps, corroded brass choirs, and melting modular synth soundscapes, all heard through a mist of hiss and noise. Fused with equal parts spastic improvisation, shrouded ritual, and meticulous arrangement, it presents a sonic topography at once tongue-in-cheek, sensitive, and nightmarish. With discordant chorales and angular trumpet improvisations churning in an ever-evolving wash of whispers and howls, MASS is a collection of three hazy, harsh, and frightful sound worlds. With tracks meandering between aggressive rhythms, eerie ambiances, and abrasive cut-up electronic textures, MASS draws inspiration from early tape music, horror film soundtracks, and grindcore. It was assembled between listening to extended doses of Else Marie Pade, Daphne Oram, Eliane Radigue, the Locust, Edgard Varèse, Maryanne Amacher, Dick Raaijmakers, Naked City, Mr. Bungle, and Thomas Ankersmit, bringing a little bit of all of them along with it. MASS was recorded and mixed over the course of three weeks in January–February 2021 while in the midst of a cross-country move. Recorded entirely in short-term housing away from her studio (and most of her instruments), Reid relied exclusively on her voice, trumpet, flugelhorn, household objects, and Make Noise's Strega semi-modular synthesizer for all sound materials. Original sound materials were recorded loosely and independently with little to no overdubbing, instead relying on meticulous editing and processing in the manner of classic tape music

Bennett Wilson Poole

Bennett Wilson Poole

Danny Wilson (Danny and the Champions of the World, Grand Drive), and Robin Bennett (The Dreaming Spires, Goldrush, Saint Etienne) join forces with Tony Poole (Starry Eyed and Laughing), producer extraordinaire, and king of the electric twelve-string Rickenbacker, their voices, guitars, and songwriting combining to marvellous effect in a collection of songs that began as uplifting acoustic music and grew into something far more wide-ranging and transcendent.

Pulling on influences from the 60s pop of The Byrds, The Beatles and The Beach Boys, through to the harmonies of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, with dashes of Petty and Springsteen thrown in for good measure, perhaps the most remarkable thing is that what shines through all of this is the quality and originality of the songwriting. The songs deal with wide-ranging issues and personal truths, from the aptly titled opener ‘Soon Enough’ through the biographical tale of Danny’s family in ‘Wilson General Store’ and the politically-charged rallying cry of ‘Hate Won’t Win’ to the social commentary of epic album-closer ‘Lifeboat (Take a Picture of Yourself)’.

All three collaborators have had critical acclaim in their own right. Danny Wilson’s credentials go back to his days in Grand Drive with brother Julian, and his consistent high calibre output with his Champions of the World led them to sweeping the board at the first UK Americana Awards with Album, Artist and Song of the year awards richly deserved; Tony Poole’s Starry Eyed and Laughing were hailed as “the English Byrds” on the back of their two CBS-released albums in the mid-seventies and he has since built an enviable reputation as producer and engineer; Robin Bennett has been relentlessly turning out timeless songs from his Oxfordshire base in bands from Goldrush to The Dreaming Spires, alongside founding two award winning festivals (Truck and Wood) and lending his multi-instrumental skills to Saint Etienne.

But in Bennett Wilson Poole, the trio seem to have stumbled upon that rarity of the whole being greater than the sum of the parts.

Performed by Ben Frost with Greg Fox, Shahzad Ismaily and Thor Harris and largely written in Eastern DR Congo, ‘A U R O R A’ aims directly, through its monolithic construction, at blinding luminescent alchemy; not with benign heavenly beauty but through decimating magnetic force.

Starved of all the adornments of its predecessor; wholly absent of guitar, of piano, of string instruments and natural wooden intimacy, ‘A U R O R A’ offers a defiant new world of fiercely synthetic shapes and galactic interference, pummelling skins and pure metals.
