    Sex Pistols

    76-77

If at first you don’t succeed, try again…

Sex Pistols 76/77, features no less than 80 alternate versions of tracks recorded between May 1976 and Sept 1977 that would help form the legendary album NMTB’s. This set includes 8 previously unreleased versions and 30 tracks available for the first time digitally.

      Background:

The Sex Pistols as we know them, John, Paul, Steve and Glen, got together in the summer of 1975. It would be some 10 months before they first ventured into a recording studio with Chris Spedding, on May 15th 1976 at Majestic in London. Later that July they’d record first at Decibel and then at Riverside with Dave Goodman and subsequently at Landsdown and Wessex later that October. All these early recording sessions are included here, giving listeners the opportunity to hear just how the songs and the band’s sound evolved from the start.

During this period the band signed to EMI and also undertook sessions at their Manchester Square studio. Again these recordings are included on this set.

After issuing Anarchy In The UK, the adverse publicity around it and the band’s TV appearance (in place of Queen) on Bill Grundy’s ITV show on Dec 1st 1976, EMI would drop them on Jan 6th1977. The band kept the record company advance of £40K and promptly got together again with Dave Goodman at Eden and Gooseberry studios and carried on recording. Glen would depart in February and be replaced by Sid Vicious.

They then signed to A&M on March 9th (£150K), re-staging the signing outside Buckingham Palace the following day for the press. A&M quickly began pressing the single God Save The Queen for a March 25th release. 25K units were created but on release day A&M announced they’d pulled the single and dropped the band and would destroy the records. Meanwhile the band kept £75K in compensation and recording sessions continued.

Friday the 13th…..lucky for some? On Friday May 13 they signed to Virgin records and would continue recording right up until Sept 1977, with NMTB’s being released the following month.

76/77 shows just how NMTB’s came to be. There was no luck, instead inspiration, creativity and hard graft.

      Vanessa Worm

      Vanessa 77

Optimo Music presents “Vanessa 77” the debut album from New Zealander Vanessa Worm. Originally due in May it was rescheduled due to the lockdown but we couldn’t wait any longer to get it out into the world, so here it is, on vinyl and digital.

After entrusting us to release 3 much loved singles it seemed right to let Vanessa stretch out across an album and show the world what she is about and how talented she is. Vanessa is exactly the kind of artist Optimo Music dreams of finding; her music fits in with no genre and no scene – it is its own genre and its own scene. Musically free and anarchic, Vanessa conforms to nobody’s dogma. Before lockdown Vanessa played a series of Southern Hemisphere live shows that entranced all who saw them. Hopefully next year she can come and do the same in the Northern Hemisphere.

We asked her for a few thoughts about her album. Vanessa says – “Vanessa 77, like most creative endeavours is a journey of self discovery. Mentally, emotionally and creatively. I spent most of my time alone in winter 2019 – focused solely on personal development & self realisation via the creation of this album. It was a way for me to put my mental state onto a plate – the joys, the fears, the epiphanies, and so on. I so desperately wanted to share what I was learning with the world too – I intended for Vanessa 77 to help others to heal, self-realise and alchemise. It was a 9 month process of death and a re-birth from the old into the new. Much like the world is experiencing now entering 2020, I hope this album can provide some form of healing, soothing, celebration and act as a sub-conscious guide for us as we enter into this New Earth. Thank you to all who listens, enjoy!”

        The Mekons 77

        It Is Twice Blessed

Formed in the late 1970s as an art collective, The Mekons are one of the longest-running and most prolific of the first-wave British punk rock bands. Through the years, the band's musical style has evolved, incorporating aspects of country music, folk music, alternative rock and even occasional experiments with dub. Following the release of new single "Still Waiting", and the success of Mekonville - a weekend-long music festival organised and curated by The Mekons themselves - the re-united 1977 line-up have continued to play live shows, and have now recorded their first album together since 1980.

          77:78

Chilli - Inc. Dubwood Allstars Remix

77:78, the new project from Aaron Fletcher & Tim Parkin, card-carrying members of the musical kaleidoscope that is The Bees, release Chilli, the latest track to be taken from their debut album, Jellies, which is released on Heavenly Recordings on Friday 6th July.

There's just 150 copies of this life affirming 7” featuring the original version of Chilli on the A side and on the flip a brilliantly nuts (and soon to be in-demand) remix by Dubwood Allstars.

Talking about the track, Aaron said:
"Chilli is just us being the sort of 70’s dirty ol’ roadhouse blues band that we always wanted to be....dressed in double denim and playing in a desert bar where the chilli is hot as rockets."

Here’s a quote from Dubwood Allstars:
"Looking forward to seeing 77:78 ...hope they're as good as when I saw them at The Fillmore in '75, managed to capture this stomping version of Chilli on my Nagra, been in the loft ever since…”

            Various Artists

            Fabriclive 77 - Erol Alkan

London born and bred, Alkan has spent the last two decades building up a reputation as a sonic innovator. From genre-spanning sets at his own legendary Trash club night to regular appearances at Bugged Out, via production credits including Late Of The Pier and Kindness and remixes for the likes of Metronomy, Tame Impala and Justice, his inimitable brand of mutant techno electro and disco has soundtracked a generation.

In 2007 Alkan’s burgeoning label Phantasy was born, the springboard for critically acclaimed releases from artists including Daniel Avery, Connan Mockasin and newest signing Ghost Culture, and he last year made his own solo debut with the release of the Illumination EP, drawing praise from the Guardian, Pitchfork, NME and more. With the solo release under his belt the time was right for Erol to step up to the FABRICLIVE mantle.

"I certainly didn’t want this mix to be a flyer or advert for me as a DJ. I feel this mix is quite specific to fabric as they are all records I would want to play in that environment. Even though I have had the benefit of playing all 3 rooms on a regular basis, this mix feels like it was designed for Room 1. It's influenced by the sight lines from the perspective behind the decks, the lights, the fact that sometimes all you can see are hands reaching into the booth, as well as those behind you dancing alone in the corners." - Erol Alkan

The 20-track mix opens with Jamie Paton’s driving, rhythmic remix of Maurice & Charles before taking in the off-kilter Latin electrofunk of Carisma, Zongamin’s moody Manfredas rework and Alkan’s own percussive, mechanical remix of The Emperor Machine before delving into the Phantasy back catalogue. Recent offerings from Tom Rowlands (Chemical Brothers) and Ghost Culture appear alongside an exclusive airing of Erol’s propulsive, shimmering ‘Sub Conscious’ and a brand new offering from Cowboy Rhythmbox aka Nathan Gregory Wilkins and Richard X.

Boot & Tax’s earworm ‘Acido’ refrain segues into Alkan’s own ‘Bang’ and an as yet unreleased Chicago Mix from Michigan’s Todd Osborn while the acid squelch of Claro Intelecto’s ‘Tone’ and supersonic synth euphoria of Daywalker + CF herald a dream sing-out-loud bootleg of Alkan’s ‘A Hold On Love’ and Saint Etienne’s classic Neil Young cover ‘Only Love Can Break Your Heart’. It’s an enthralling mix from a true master of his craft.

              The Funkees

Dancing Time - The Best Of Eastern Nigeria's Afro Rock Exponents 1973 - 77

‘Dancing Time - The Best of Eastern Nigeria’s Afro Rock Exponents 1973 - 77’ by The Funkees is the latest title on Soundway to mine the rich musical output of 60s and 70s Nigeria. For the five year period this compilation spans The Funkees output crackled with dancefloor fire. Presented here are 18 slices of funky Afro-rock grooves hand picked by Soundway’s Miles Cleret from a selection of the bands 45s and 2 long players.

In the early 1970s The Funkees were the number-one east Nigerian band and the only outfit to seriously challenge the popular Lagos based rock combos MonoMono and BLO. It wasn't long before promoters in the UK came calling and The Funkees packed up their instruments and moved to London where they quickly established a fierce reputation on the live circuit.
Here they recorded two seminal albums before finally breaking up in 1977 amidst some controversy. This collection features for the first time all of their Nigerian 45s alongside the best of their UK album material and is accompanied by a full interview with original member Sonny Akpan, who still lives in the capital.

                Michi Sarmiento

Aqui Los Bravos! - The Best Of Michi Sarmiento Y Su Combo Bravo 1967 - 77

Soundway remain in Colombia for the follow up to "Cartagena! Curro Fuentes & The Big Band Cumbia & Descarga Sound of Colombia 1962-72", with a collection of pure Colombian dancefloor thunder; 16 tracks of the finest guaguancós, descargas and cumbias recorded by legendary bandleader Michi Sarmiento y su Bravos, and released on the infamous Discos Fuentes label between 1967 and 1977. Born into a musical family in 1938, Michi, a musical-child prodigy of sorts, began playing the cabarets, casinos and cathouses of Cartagena in the late 1950's. By 1967 he had formed his Combo Bravo (the band consisted of two trumpets, Michi on tenor sax and clarinet, guitar and piano, electric bass, tumbadora, timbales and a young Joe Arroyo on vocals) and began to play live alongside other exciting young groups such as Toño y su Combo, Los Seven del Swing and Puerto Rico y su Combo. Along with infectious dance porros and cumbias, Michi y sus Bravos specialized in rumbling guaguancós, descargas and hot covers of early salsa and boogaloo hits. Michi's LPs on Discos Fuentes, brilliantly produced and recorded by Mario 'Pachanga' Rincón, were packed with fast-paced dancefloor burners featuring pumping bass, insistent montunos, sax solos and nasty metallic percussion.

                  Talking Heads

                  77

Talking Heads first LP "77" introduced the New York band perfectly. A mish mash of art-punk-funk, with heavy doses of bubblegum and a splash of the Caribbean. 11 tracks which show off the bands varying influences, David Byrne's weird vocal delivery, and the constant tempo changes and twists in their style. You can hear hints of the moody side of their sound on tracks such as "New Feeling" and "Who Is It?", contrasting with the jolly funk of "Pulled Up" and "Uh Oh Love Has Come To Town" all of this is augmented by the albums standout "Psycho Killer", a brooding slice of paranoid punk that still sounds fresh today.
