Sonic Youth

Anagrama - 2024 Repress

Anagrama is an EP by Sonic Youth. It was originally released in May 1997, and was the first in a series of experimental and mostly instrumental releases issued on the band's own SYR label. While 1995's Washing Machine LP moniker was a thinly-veiled jab at the corporate aesthetic ("no, you cannot turn Sonic Youth into a household appliance brand", the band even considered changing its name to Washing Machine but settled on the album title instead), their major label relationship was indeed a curious buzzpoint of talk on the street after their intake to DGC in 1990. It wouldn't be fair to say that this state of existence propelled the band to reinforce its independent mindset by releasing a series of opaque-looking, French-language-dipping, highbrow-looking releases on their own that focused on the more abstract improv/compositional side of the band; in all truths they had been heavily steeped in self-releasing spillover material prior to that. But after a pressure pot of the early 90's indoctrination into a new operational mode for the band and its visibility, and the forces around it attempting to shape their direction, it seemed like a good time to create a strong show of radical concept. The Anagrama EP became the first in a series of the SYR label's Perspective Musicales releases seemingly cementing Sonic Youth's connectivity to an increasing public awareness in experimental composers of the 20th century (French or otherwise). The irony was that many of those original avant composers being rediscovered by the indie audience (Partch, Neuhaus, Reich, Messaien) often found themselves on major labels anyway! So, perhaps this reverse approach was a necessary concept/comment given the music biz climate of the 90's.

Regardless of how apples and oranges fell in Xenakian probability/theory, it was clear that both Sonic Youth's stature in progressive music, aided by now unlimited taperoll time thanks to a home base studio downtown established after their Lollapalooza stint, gave the band plenty of trailblazing time for their self examination of untraveled avenues. "Anagrama" unfolds into nine minutes of delicate textures, starting with thick drone segueing into moments reminiscent of the post-crescendo flutter/comedown of "Marquee Moon's" trail-out; Thurston, Lee and Kim's guitars all circling round each other taking delicate pokes and stabs before drifting into some post-rock rhythmic moves tapered with complementary percussive guidance from Steve Shelley. "Improvisation Ajoutée" reaches further out into dissolve with whirring oscillations, guitars hissing and clanking radiator-style in a short blast format that continues into "Tremens" and a spooked-out landscape of gelatinous notes snaking up slowly. The sparseness of attack is colorful, textures emit and linger, silent spots shine, all flanked by tasteful drumming that provides the thread to all the abstraction. Shelley's approach here is interestingly sideways to any kind of usual rock action, it's tempered, mutant and metronomic simultaneously. The finale track "Mieux: De Corrosion" is a real pedal-palatte showcase. Here, Plutonian guitar wash flanges upwards to buoy a myriad of colorful eruptions of amp-spuzz, chopped up tone blasts and general confusion. Out of the blue, some metallic one-note choogle kicks in and threatens to explode into some Judas Priestly motion, before it all sputters into aural glass showers, clang, and finally a ferocious wave of more flange hiss that crashes down on a dime. Fans of the '86 Spinhead Sessions as well as the recently-exhumed later jams of In/Out/In will take in the sounds of SYR1 with glee. - Brian Turner

        Sonic Youth

        Slaapkamers Met Slagroom

Unfettered by studio time limitations with their own home base of Echo Canyon, SYR 2 shows Sonic Youth chasing the shadows of predecessor SYR 1 and the series' distinct aesthetic: total exploration of freedom and further discovery. While the cover art evokes European contempo classical releases of yore, Sonic Youth distinctively reinvent their own personal output potential the way those kinds of records revolutionized a previously defined genre. Their ethos of utilizing the roots of the Ramones, Television, VU, Stooges, and No Wave to shape their first decade now find the band in later years bullet-pointing fascination in AMM, MEV, improvised music, free jazz and other outer-limit/organic refractions of traditional rock. While Sonic Youth's spontaneous-creation moments had long been showcased in their recordings, Peel Sessions, and live, SYR 2 sums up the band's state in 1997: rolling lots of tape, fine-tuning ideas and presenting great moments of exciting new directions, allowing deep-listener type fans to gain better insight into their sound process. Add to that the alchemy of Jim O'Rourke's gradual entry into the core band which would soon be fully on display for SYR 3, and this series is an X-ray of evolution, dissection and reconstruction

Scratch’s ‘Keep On Searching For Love’ features the uplifting vocals of Linda Taylor (who had a successful solo career on Prelude Records) and was produced by Tony Williams for his Master- Funk label. Sounding like a mixture of rare groove anthems like Gwen McCrae’s ‘All This Love I’m Giving’, Linda Williams’ ‘Elevate Your Mind’ and The Emotions’ ‘Best of Your Love’, once again with a distinct South London 80s dancefloor attitude, making ‘Keep On Searching For Love’ a modern day soulful bullet.

The flipside instrumental, ‘Eastern Lady’, comes complete with hypnotic bassline, drum machines, synths and stabbing horn lines.

              Sonic Youth / Jim O'rourke

              Invito Al Cielo

The opener "Invito Al Cielo" is all amp-moan and synth scratch, yet placid (in the storm-eye sense), featuring some inspired trumpet-Brut and more whispered scats from Kim. The shimmering vibes and sine-pulse of "Hungara Vivo" actually recalls the digi-mosaics of oh-so-au curant electronicsters like Microstoria, yet nonetheless was performed by the band in good ole real time and space. "Radio-Amatoroj" is another long-form spelunk into an audio architectonics of cathedralic proportion. More cymbal-spray and guitar-gong percussives, shifting textures ebb and fade in some kind of psycho-sensory algebra you don't even need to know how to solve.

IG Culture returns as Likwid Continual Space Motion with four fresh tracks for intergalactic space jazz battles. "The Remedy" opens proceedings with urgent horns and perfectly balanced moments of tension and release - the saxophone lines breaking through the taut strings beautifully. High tech jazz of the highest order.

"Vanguard", featuring Tyrone Stuart sounds like Ras G meets the current London underground - think Ezra Collective, Yussef Kamaal etc; with that poignant hip-hop edge. "The Score" is a highly frenetic, free piece of modern bop with rich double bass and occasional scats for added authenticity. Finally "Givin' Up" concludes with a definite lean towards UKG and broken beat styles, taking us full circle back to the right now. An impeccably well executed EP that shows that UK jazz is in as healthy and inventive state as ever. Recommended.

More extended edits from the Brazilian disco archives as Nick The Record, Charles Maurice and Waxist all look to eke out even more joy from these jubilant branches of Brazilian dance music.

"Relax" is soft, grooving disco; delicate yet subtle driving and perfectly typifying that iconic 'Loft' sound (complete with uplifting key changes and perc sections). It's the very essence of disco executed with Brazilian flair.

Rabo De Saia's "Ripa Na Xulipa" is pure feel good boogie vibes. I just wish I knew what they were chirping on about! It sounds fun whatever it is and the language barrier certainly won't prevent you from shaking a tail feather or two to this one!

NTR tames Famks' "Labirinto" into a sultry Sunday session jam. Mid energy, heavily grooving and with that warmth and sentiment you need towards the end of the weekend.

Unmissable stuff here from Favourite and team - highly recommended.

                  The Chemical Brothers

                  For That Beautiful Feeling

The Chemical Brothers - one of the most acclaimed and innovative electronic duo in the world - have announced details of their tenth studio album For That Beautiful Feeling.

Recorded in the band’s own studio just near the south coast, this is a record that hunts for and captures that that wild moment when sound overwhelms you and almost pulls you under yet ultimately lets you ride its wave, to destinations unknown. It’s a record that pinpoints the exact moment you lose all control, where you surrender and let the music move you as if pulled by an invisible thread.

                    STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: There is absolutely no sign that The Chemical Brothers are slowing down, with 2019's incendiary 'No Geography' blowing people away and 'For That Beautiful Feeling' set to do so even more. It's a triumphant, heavy hitting marvel that is enhanced perfectly by Halo Maud's distinctive vocal talents. Classic 'chems and then some.

Matt says: Rocketing into orbit with the stadium inferno that is “Live Again”, there’s little chance to touch down, as Tom and Ed hit the thrusters for one of the most stratospheric ‘Chems LPs we can remember. A rousing & rebellious message for our times, with the usual smattering of guest appearances and sampled vox articulating their uplifting insubordination with soaring, memorable hooks.

The Carver Senior Song (Class Of ’83)

David Horridge's unreleased bedroom studio tape material (1982).

Shortly after releasing the inimitable “Light Patterns”, David Horridge recorded a handful of demos. These sole artifacts from Dave capture the same Mancunian melancholy presented on
“Light Patterns”, and offer an insight into David’s contributing piece of the puzzle. It comes as no surprise that every track laid to tape from that era is an absolute gem.

David’s playing comes in the form of well-timed melodies and carefully placed basslines.

Nothing forced or rushed, and each movement really sits with a mood. “Journey Within” is an even more sedated, mellow effort than “Light Patterns”. The songs were perhaps even sketches for a
follow up that never manifested. The album’s greatest strength is in setting a peaceful, pastoral mood that allows for a relaxed listen all the way through. Hypnotic stuff.

The only deviation is the final song, “One Note Bossa”, which came as a surprise with its use of a drum machine. A feature that demonstrates what might have been were David have continued to
                        experiment and release albums...

                          Funk Masters

                          Love Money

“There are certain records that ‘split the atom’, creating a totally new sound - serendipitous moments in time when an artist pulls a rabbit from the hat and forecasts a change ahead.” - Greg Wilson, DJ Mag.

Few records crossed over into different musical worlds as successfully as the Funk Masters’ sublime UK disco / jazz funk monster classic cut, ‘Love Money’. A monster underground hit in New York - everywhere from Larry Levan’s Paradise Garage and David Mancuso’s Loft in New York - through to the new wave / no wave dance crowds at Area, Club 57, Danceteria, Limelight and Mudd Club, and artists such as Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, who similarly played the track to death. The track then also became a huge Chicago house club track and influenced everyone from Masters at Work’s Louie Vega to Francois Kevorkian with its dubbed-out sound.

Originally released in 1981, the track came out on the flipside over a rap cut to the song by Bo Kool, one of the earliest examples of UK rap, but it was the instrumental ‘Love Money’, with its dubbed out sound effects, that was more often played, filling dancefloors everywhere. This nod to reggae and dub was not by chance. The track was produced by long-time UK resident Jamaican reggae DJ and producer Tony Williams. This was his first attempt at a club track but, by using reggae musicians, he created new style blending funk, disco and reggae, years ahead of its time.

So if ever you want to hear a record that encapsulates the world of disco, funk, proto-house, hip-hop, no wave dance and reggae in one go then this is it.

This is the first release from Soul Jazz Records’ delving into the Tony Williams Tania Music and Funk Masters catalogue, which contains a wealth of UK jazz funk killers.

Lore Of The Land - 2023 Reissue

Recorded under the castle in Lewes, East Sussex, 'Lore Of The Land' is the debut release from the Order Of The 12. Featuring Rachel Thomas on vocals, with Stuart Carter on guitars, and Richard Norris on keyboards, drums and production. The music looks to the South Downs and the Sussex folk tradition for inspiration, with echoes of psych folk acts like Trees or Mellow Candle.

                              Historically Fucked

The Mule Peasants’ Revolt Of 12,067

Historically Fucked is a four way entanglement made to create short, eruptive songs and then set about obliterating them from the inside, like improvising a barrel to encase themselves in and then proceeding to lick their way out of it. It is about playing and laughing at playing, and it is about not doing either of those things sometimes. Sometimes it is to do with talking, howling or grunting, and sometimes it is to do with hitting and rubbing.

Historically Fucked contains four people, who each share the same duties, and whose names in sequence are Otto Willberg, David Birchall, Greta Buitkuté and Alecs Pierce. They are from Manchester and often other places. Guitar, bass, drums and voices keenly jostle amid the group’s frenzy of spontaneous rock throttles. Some of these rampant exercises in avant are collected on ‘The Mule Peasants’ Revolt of 12,067’, the band’s new album, released by Upset The Rhythm on February 3rd. This is the group’s first release since 2018’s mantlepiece staple ‘Aliven Wool’ (Heavy Petting). This is Rock and/or Roll as fertilizer, uncivilised and free, as if one were to imagine what the Plastic Ono Band would’ve hit upon if they had read ‘Riddley Walker’, the sound of an entire timeline of expression put back together back-to-front, misshapen and irradiated.

‘The Mule Peasants’ Revolt of 12,067’ is not mere Sedentary Rock but Blasted Basalt, Frog worshipping cave-funk, harmolodic hullabaloo-wop, a musical game of “badger in the bag”. It is the sound of sacks crammed full of aggregate, a chimerical mind-meld, a seductive din that is to a hound dog in blue suede shoes what a raking of the dorsal fin with a fat marrow pinecone is to a pelican in the midst of being fired from the academy.

‘The Mule Peasants’ Revolt of 12,067’ by Historically Fucked was recorded by Rory Salter, mixed by Otto Willberg and mastered by Mikey Young. The liminally worrisome artwork was painted by John Cobweaver.

“They say these days that History is Fucked. Nothing ever dies but continues to rule the earth as an undead tyrant that cannot accept its own decomposition, look earwardly upon the dance of the proudly dead and decrepit!”

                                Voodoo

Treviso, Italy-based two piece Kill Your Boyfriend are releasing their fourth album 'Voodoo' via Sister 9 Recordings (Europe), Little Cloud Records (North America) and Shyrec (Itay). A frantic and hypnothising bacchanalia of Psych & Industrial tinged soundwaves, the new album is a collection of reverb laden necromantic charms, summoning the souls and bones of the greats in the Rock & Roll pantheon of the 1950s. The duo delivers such glittery dark enchantment via 7 hoodoo hymns, travelling with a crumbling, ghostly and magically whizzing Rocket 88, in the company of Marie Laveau and madame Lalaurie. It's a relentless whirl of Voodoo-Psych, Industrial-Billy, Electro-GrisGris, which you can dance to.

The new LP follows 'Killadelica', where Kill Your Boyfriend had refined their debut signature sound, bridging the gap between the semi-obscure but hauntingly fascinating tradition of Veneto's PostPunk (Death In Venice, Evabraun, Pyramids, etc.) and contemporary Psych-Nouveau. With 'Voodoo', Matteo Scarpa and Antonio Angeli, explore new genres and expand the sonic borders, without losing their original intent. They replace the synth bass with a bass-guitar, adding more fluidity and weight to a renewed and punchier rhythmic section. Electronic and acoustic percussion are fuller and heavier, and the band's new stomp-machine is a hyper-convulsive version of the saturated Rock & Roll and R&B drumming, from the cheap garage studios of 1950s indie labels.

Sida A is the most Rock & Roll of the two, and it is inspired by Michael Ventura's essay "Hear that Long Snake Moan", which brought forward the idea that "the Voodoo rite of possession by the god became the standard of American performance in Rock’n’Roll" where the performers "let themselves be possessed not by any god they could name but by the spirit they felt in the music”. Each song invokes one or a set of the lost souls of the Rock & Roll era, with 'The Day The Music Died' referring to the infamous 3rd of February 1959. Side B descends deeper into the magic swamps of Creole magic, with music taking on a much more liturgical function, conjuring shamanic possessions via extra layers of tribal percussion. The band says of side B: "we see it as a one long ritualistic descent into a psychedelic underworld made of echoing voices, claustrophobic spaces populated by lost souls, enchanters and witchdoctors."

                                                The New Nonsense

Robert Lloyd is unique in 'punk' as someone who began his career at the start of the era, never fell prey to cliché or temptations of mass stardom, actually still works and now, in 2022, stands at his artistic and commercial peak . . . not that Robert's saying any of that, but does it matter? His status is due to a number of factors: a gambler's luck, backing by the finest version of Nightingales yet assembled, his faultless wry humour and wit, a difficult but unimpeachably excellent body of work, and the fortuitous timing of 2021's Robert Lloyd documentary, King Rocker. The release of film seems cunningly planned, with its roll-out brilliantly plotted, although it was actually the Covid epidemic which caused the cancellation of this film's scheduled theatrical screenings.

Rather than postpone, Fire Films' James Nicholls made the unusual choice of making a deal to release the film through Sky TV, where it was an immediate success and has been shown many times since. The audience, captive at home by way of the epidemic, was far larger than hoped, and as a result, The Nightingales have emerged as one of this era's most brilliant, unorthodox and genuine bands of the post-punk. Three planned tours for the band's last album, were Covid-cancelled before a fourth attempt succeeded. With bassist Andi Schmid stuck in Germany and unable to record, the band asked three of their fans to remix tracks from Four Against Fate.

The titles - let alone the radically alterations hereon - give no clue to which tracks were remixed. Contributing their massive talents are DJ Surgeon, whose stint as an opener for Lady Gaga push the band ever closer to the charts (err, not likely, but the tune is brilliant!), The Go! Team's Ian Parton, who'd posted of his affection for the band and remains a figure of fascination, being a good dollop more talented than other young upstarts, and Randy Kuntz, whose devilish musical skills have added serious sizzle to the last few Nightingales records. As Nightingales toil on new projects, initial plans for The New Nonsense could not be realised. Worldwide vinyl pressing delays made delivery before last year's tour impossible. The project seemed destined for collector status from the start - we pressed too few copies, Robert though it would be 'novel' to set the back sleeve ninety degrees off from the front sleeve, Four Against Fate is now nearly two years old, and the creative efforts of the band did not slow during lockdown

                                                  Dawn Penn

                                                  No, No, No

Stone-cold classic - the ultimate Studio One tune and the ultimate rhythm & blues / soul to reggae cut, as Dawn Penn vamps on Bo Diddley and Willie Cobbs. Floorshaking, speaker-busting seminal tune.

                                                    First time ever on 12”.

Cut super loud, and with a killer dub version on the flip.

A timeless and as powerful a slice of dub as anything the genre has produced. It's one of those, every-home-needs-one records.

Also included are sleeve notes from Pete Astor, free downloads of original BBC files and a set of postcards.

Barefoot Beats dig deep and deliver a well-balanced package of Brazilian delights via two rising stars of the scene Elado and Bernardo Pinhiero.

Elado kicks things off with a highly infectious sing-a-long boogie affair that is guaranteed to get those hands in the air. Mouth watering and head spinning, this Brazilian cocktail is packed to the gills with monkey drums, sumptuous string arrangements and plenty of mid tempo disco brilliance.

While on the flip, Pinheiro's more wonky, heads down disco beast is perfect for when you really want to feel the heat. Filters set to stun, chopped vocals chucked into the rhythm section and plenty of additional electronic weirdness, this one is a proper disco bumper.

Originally released in 1979, "Art of the Acoustic Steel String Guitar 6 & 12" was Robbie Basho's 15th record, and his magnum opus of solo guitar. It is the culmination of his life's effort to usher guitar music into a new artistic paradigm, and to "establish the steel string as a concert instrument indigenous to America. This album represents Basho’s most technically fine guitar work. In both composition and performance, the album is enormously complex and yet conveys an effortlessness unique to Basho. As he famously espoused, “My philosophy is quite simple: soul first, technique later.” The richness of Basho's soul emanates from this record as distinctly as each note ringing from his steel strings. Only one song on the record (“Pasha II”) features Basho’s enigmatic voice, but it may be his most extraordinary vocal performance – his voice calling out through a shimmer of strings, singing ancient syllables with timeless emotion. The remaining ten instrumental songs roam through Eastern and Western modalities, dark and light meditations, wild and restrained expression. With "Art of the Acoustic Steel String Guitar 6 & 12", Basho summons rich allusions, hallucinations and delicately numinous passages. As he said, "It's not about going far out, it's about going far in. It's about a deeper feeling." These are deep waters indeed, as substantial and enriching today as they were 35 years ago.

Remastered from the original tapes. Artwork is presented in very much the same fashion as the original release with a few minimal changes made to include new information. Paper stock (heavy reverse-board) and pressing weight (140 gram) have been upgraded. New vinyl masters were cut by the excellent John Golden. A download for high quality Mp3's and FLAC is included.

"All the highlights of Basho’s work are found here: eccentric tunings, modal playing and a keen ear for Eastern music (which he studied and incorporated into his music), and a spirituality that could neither be outshined by the technical flashiness nor the (unavoidable?) exotic undertones." – TINY MIX TAPES.

                                                              Remix 12"

This remix 12" features three unique reworks of Kit Sebastian tracks. Each of the producers featured in this package created their own interpretation of the ‘lo-fi-hi-fi’ originals and have taken the duo’s sound into bold new directions. When it came to choosing who should remix Kit Sebastian, Natureboy Flako (Flako / Dario Rojo Guerra) was a producer at the top of the list. Keeping true to the original, whilst leaving his own stamp on the track, his mix adds breakbeat drums and middle-Eastern guitar riffs that transform the track into a more cinematic piece. It sounds like the music from an exotica dive-bar scene in a David Lynch film - which of course, is a very good thing. Producer and DJ Baris K, who was behind the awesome ‘Istanbul 70’ series (re-edits of classic Turkish gems), takes ‘Durma’ in a very different direction. Totally reconstructing the track, his remix has flipped the original and totally run wild. The results are an epic left-field electronic workout. By bringing the spoken-word vocals to the forefront and giving the track a darker industrial vibe, it wouldn’t sound out of place bouncing around the walls of a Berlin basement club at 5am on a Sunday morning. The pairing of Kit Sebastian and Halal Cool J grew after DJing together at the alternative Great Escape party at the Mr Bongo HQ in May 2019. They share a love for dusty old psychedelic Turkish records. Halal Cool J (aka Aly Jamal / Don Leisure) has released records on First World and is a co-member of Darkhouse Family with Earl Jeffers. For his interpretation he has delivered a mix-tape-collage with a hip-hop aesthetic, and rather than focusing on remixing a specific song, he has cut and paste his favourite elements of tracks taken off the band’s ‘Mantra Moderne’ album.

In 1997, Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age) and a handful of friends retreated to the desert of Joshua Tree, CA in order to isolate themselves from the distractions and comforts of their everyday lives. What began as a casual writing and recording session amongst friends has since become a project of legend. Spanning twelve volumes over the course of two decades, Desert Sessions has featured some of music’s most cherished icons stepping out of their comfort zones and collaborating with one another to create some of the most exciting music of their careers.

After nearly sixteen years since its last entry, the longest-running mix tape in existence, Desert Sessions returns with two stunning new volumes in its already storied catalog, Vol. 11 & 12, featuring collaborations from Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top), Les Claypool (Primus), Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint), Jake Shears (Scissor Sisters), Mike Kerr (Royal Blood), Carla Azar (Autolux, Jack White), Matt Sweeney (Chavez), David Catching (Co-founder of Rancho De La Luna studio), comedian Matt Berry (What We Do in the Shadows), Töôrnst Hülpft and newcomer Libby Grace.

Josh Homme collaborates with various standout members of rock / indie / grunge royalty (plus a killer tune with Jake Shears of Scissor Sisters), but believe me, it's very good. Country tinged rock, foot-stomping psychedelic shredding and damn good songwriting make for a really interesting combination of sounds, and in the end, a brilliant LP.

Always perfectly capturing the zeitgeist, Darren Hayman releases his 18th solo album, 12 Astronauts, on the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing 12 men have walked on the moon, and 12 Astronauts includes a song for each of them, from Neil Armstrong to Harrison Schmitt and Gene Cernan (the Apollo 17 astronauts who quibble about who was the last man on the moon, was it the last person to set foot on the moon (Schmitt) or the last person to take his foot off the moon (Cernan)?). Darren has always had an interest in space travel since 1977 when he saw Star Wars.

Back in 2001 Hefner (Darren Hayman’s previous band) released a single called Alan Bean about the 4th man on the moon (an all new version is included on 12 Astronauts). In 2011 he contributed songs and pictures to Vostok 5, a London exhibition (and compilation album) about people and animals in space (he has also illustrated the cover of 12 Astronauts). In March 2014, as part of a year-long residency at Dalston’s Vortex, he played a set of his space-related songs supported by Robin Ince (this included the live debut of a number of tracks from 12 Astronauts).

His record label, ‘Belka’, is named for one of the first two dogs to go into earth orbit and return alive, so it should come as no surprise that the 12 Astronauts were in the back of his mind while he researched, wrote and recorded his classics about Thankful Villages, the Essex Witch Trials, Lidos, William Morris and British seaside resorts. The songs are works of historical fiction. Although Darren researched heavily he is essentially imagining himself as each astronaut and singing in the first person. The songs are not all set during the Apollo missions. Buzz Aldrin battles with his demons and fights for his marriage. Pete Conrad sympathises with his partner’s fear of an accident in flight. David Scott wonders what happened to his bodyguard on his press tour. Gene Cernan list every object he can think of that was left on the moon. Although the subject is big Darren has always written songs about small things and this album is no different. Darren collects together tiny moments from magnificent lives.' The album itself is curious in its genesis as Darren conceived and started the album back in 2008 and only recently came back to complete it. Some of the vocals are recorded 10 years apart.

                                                                        TRACK LISTING

Recorded in Cabestany (France) and Berlin at Anton’s Cobra Studio, this three track 12” single comes in deluxe packaging & precedes the full length album released in June this year.

This then previously unreleased recording of the band’s entire 1979 New Year’s Eve concert, was mixed live by Stasium, and broadcast on WNEW-FM. Recorded in New York City at The Palladium, with audio sourced from Tommy Ramone’s original cassette of the console recording, it features blistering performances of “Blitzkrieg Bop,” “Rockaway Beach,” and “Sheena Is A Punk Rocker,” along with several songs from Road To Ruin: “I Don’t Want You,” “I Wanna Be Sedated,” and “I Wanted Everything”. This will be its first release on vinyl.

                                                                            Various Artists

Eeny Meeny / Exotic Blues & Rhythm Vol. 12

Brand new volumes in the successful Stag-O-Lee series titled Exotic Blues & Rhythm - Enjoy amazing and danceable tunes from the late 50s and early 60s - a handful of Popcorn dancefloor smashes, a few grinding Tittyshakers, awesome Rhythm & Blues - most of them with an exotic twist! 12 songs each on nice 10" vinyl (only)!

It's the end of a busy and stressful year for Sheffield / Liverpool electronic pioneers, Black Beacon Sound. Having released a 7" every month for the whole of 2017 (or thereabouts), with each one being released digitally, with extra content (and each one featuring a remix by an undeniably talented producer), they have decided to make all of these superb remixes available on a drool-inducingly beautiful double 12" emblazoned with their eye-catching and iconic logo and sleeve design.

It's a beautiful package in itself, but focusing on that is obviously doing an injustice to the superb work put in by all the producers to create this mindblowing excercise in cohabitational production and community-minded collaboration.

We kick things off with the glitched hip-hop aestetics and stoner haze of the Mad Wash rework of Zen The Sharpshooters' 'Every Lil' Bit', bringing the hot-boxed haze and relaxing the muscles before The Fire Beneath The Sea's 'Error Correction' sees a pitch-bent funked-out remix, grounded with insistent shuffled hi-hats and wah'd out guitars, before the legendary Galactic Funk Milita's festival vibe is chopped into a syncopated latin stomp for a rubberlips rework.

On the flipside, David J Boswell's haunting electro-folk goes full dubstep in the more than capable hands of the forward-facing electronic euphorics of Liverpool electronic virtuoso, Afternaut before Denham Audio bring forth a clattering industrial fractalisation of Hang Syem's 'Frontier J'.

The following track is possibly my favourite on the compilation (but with enough material on here to keep even the most diverse of tastes more than happy, I expect yours will be different), and comes from Sheffield wunderkind, Yak. Snappy percussion and perfectly measured electronic stabs bring a disphoric syncopation to the already excellent 'Wicked Sound' by Grievous Angel.

Onto the final side now, (the last being blank for you to admire the gorgous sky-blue marbling) and R. Lyle takes Apta's 'Tides' and breaks it down into a simmering futuristic haze of reversed reverbs and hazy throbs, before the arshaw remix of my personal favourite release of the lot, in Bemp's 'Minotaur', culminating in a psychedelic propulsive stomper, courtesy of the aforementioned Yak and YAKONA. A match made in heaven.

Barry says: Black Beacon have culminated their journey in a fittingly epic and ridiculously efficacious summary of their dedication to the independent music industry with this stunning double LP. A journey in every sense of the word, and a superb flipside to their already mindblowing releases.

                                                                              9. C3. Viggy (YAKONA Remix)

Funkycan aka Am Kinem teams up with Max Gee, while Money $ex regulars Imyrmind & Delphonic join Glenn Astro and Lonny Benz for a jam packed Money $ex outing. "Steiermark2017" is by Funkycan 7 & Graef and is a techno track made with a DR-550 and the crumar performer. It weaves and winds with slightly discordant melodies as fizzy, saturated drums pop and spurt. Glenn and Max drop the sub heavy and highly trickski, "No Tricks Dub". Thick walls of bass and intricately programmed tribal rhythms are order of the day as the pair conjure up a track similar to Paul Daly's cult remix of Jose Padilla's "Adios Amigo" - excellent! Delphonic & Astro provide the EPs crowning glory (in my opinion), a gentle propullsive, percussive glider that sounds like it's been ripped off a Sued record and should wins fans across the board with its delicate but engrossing sounds. Finally Imyrmind collaborates with Lonny Benz for the disjointed club attack that is "DID" - a juddering assault of drums embellished with subtle analogue nuances. A belter here from all involved, most recommended.

The concept is the same as our yearly Counter Culture compilations, however we aim to give you a taste of what we're loving throughout the year, rather than just annually. Volume 1 features 4 female fronted bands that we LOVE. First up on Side A is London's Big Moon with That Looks Nice which is on vinyl for the first time and is an uptempo gem which twists and turns at every corner and is as good as Elastica in their prime. Next up are Our Girl (who conveniently are fronted by Big Moon member Soph Nathan) with a Ty Segall cover. They take Sad Fuzz and give it a neat lo-fi reworking and make it sound like a female fronted version of the Libertines. Side B starts with another London based band, Girl Ray with the aural confection cut Stupid things which is part Carly Simon and Part Dolly Mixture. Whilst Baltimore-based trio Snail Mail end proceedings with the excellent track Thinning which was originally released on tape by Sister Polygon Records. It oozes emotion and despair and we have not heard anything this instant since the early Best Coast and Veronica Falls singles.

                                                                                TRACK LISTING

A2) Our Girl - Sad Fuzz (Ty Segall Cover)
B1) Girl Ray - Stupid Things
                                                                                B2) Snail Mail - Thinning

Germany's Alex Seidel brings some heat for Schwarz 12 Records. The whole EP possess that playful, skewed, after party vibe that you only really get after spending more than 24 hours awake dancing to repetitive music. Perfectly at home in Berlin's non-stop hedonism, all five tracks exude a frazzled, lucid flow which wander in direction and eschews the more traditional structures of house and techno for a more free-form, non-linear exploration. The sounds and beats are fractured and fizzy, instantly piquing the interest of the intoxicated listener. Recorded on June 12 1970 - the sound is just amazing: a stoned lysergic wall of acid guitars jamming away and never letting up, pounding bass, furious drums and mystical howling vocals. A true landmark and cornerstone in Swedish psychedelic music history , there's nothing like this bunch of progressive hippie Swedes reared on minimalism.

Contains a mind-bending sidelong previously unreleased track, revised liner notes and loads of previously unpublished photo.

Inspiring generations of musicians, Scottish guitarist and songwriter Bert Jansch will be forever known as a remarkable talent and a leading figure in the British folk revival. He came to prominence in the 1960s becoming widely known for his exemplary guitar technique and innovative blend of folk, blues and jazz. Later he became a founding member of folk super group Pentangle before returning to his solo career. Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Donovan and Johnny Marr have long been fans. Reaching people far and wide, Bert deservedly received many accolades for his contributions to music including the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Radio 2 Folk Awards and a MOJO Merit Award.

‘Live at the 12 Bar’ was recorded in 1995 at the legendary London music venue and is a fitting tribute not only to Bert’s virtuosity but to this renowned hub for folk music and other genres. Bert’s meticulous performance brings together songs from ‘When The Circus Comes To Town’, released in the same year, along with the haunting reworking of ‘Blues Run The Game’ (written by Earth’s own Jackson C. Frank) and traditional folk songs ‘Curragh Of Kildare’ and ‘Lily Of The West’ which were staples in Jansch’s repertoire. ‘Live at the 12 Bar’ captures an intimate gig that’s richly brought to life by his spellbinding ability to hold a room. The warmth and reverent silence from fans reminds us of what it was like to attend his shows and the true legend that we have lost. Two decades after its first release, ‘Live At The 12 Bar’ is issued for the first time on vinyl. This exceptional record is the first release in Earth Recordings’ new extensive reissue series of Bert Jansch catalogue.

                                                                                        Bok Bok

                                                                                        Your Charizmatic Self

In late February Bok Bok revealed ‘Melba’s Call’, the single featuring vocals by Fade To Mind star and BBC Sound Of 2014-listed Kelela.

Now Night Slugs are pleased to announce an album of new material from the producer and labelhead; his first full work since 2011’s ‘Southside’ EP and its club anthem ‘Silo Pass’.

Expanding on a theme first started on the ‘MJT’ white label in 2012, this EP sees Bok create a replicant electro-funk, built with fragments of classics, arranged with a grime logic and weaponised with 2014 sub-weight.

The ‘Melba’s Call’ video is the setting for the entire EP, reverb from the bare concrete walls of the bunker-studio can be heard throughout. A central greenhouse is filled with a steamy jungle of corporate flora, unsettlingly hyper-real, like the warmth of the record’s sample material is being rendered bionic, pumped through military-grade equipment.

Running through the tracks is the influence of London’s futuristic millennial music - grime. The brutalism of alternating 8-bar structures is the DNA of Bok Bok’s productions. These tracks continue in the tradition of R&G (Rhythm & Grime) and its project to blend the soul of R&B with the potency of grime. Propelled by melody and at times almost sadistic in their repetition, the club tracks of the record play with pain and pleasure, while the two shorter ‘Greenhouse’ tracks allow brief moments of stillness.

And ‘Your Charizmatic Self’? It’s a reference to the source material and the exuberance of original live performances captured and automated. It’s also a message of charm and positivity, of self-realization.

Double LP in black paper inners in 5mm spine sleeve, with download card which features a bonus, digital only track.

Me And My Kites, With Tony Durant Of Fuchsia.

                                                                                          The Band

OK, hands up who remembers the album, ‘Fuchsia’ from 1971? Hands-up who loves the mix of acid-folk, progressive rock, strings and songs? Yeah, me too.

Me and My Kites are a new band, from Sweden.

Why is that relevant? They are named after a song on Fuchsia's album, which must say something about their influences and, on their first-ever single, it’s all the more appropriate as Fuchsia's original lead singer Tony Durant wrote and now sings a new version of Fuchsia's song 'The Band' on the a-side (remember those?) of this new 7” on FdM’s Regal Crabomophone label.

The b-side is dedicated to Kevin Ayers, and is an extended version of the Me And My Kites song, Isis’ Adventure, from the band’s new album, ‘Like A Dream Back Then’)

                                                                                          I hope you like it.

Recorded in one rainy afternoon in December, in the band's living room, the seven tracks blend the bands tastes for the psyche garage sounds of bands such as The Sonics and The Seeds with the sharp energy of the likes of the Dead Kennedys and The Clash.

                                                                                              Skill 7 Stamina 12

                                                                                              Robotics With Strings

This is the debut album from underground post-punk group Skill 7 Stamina 12. It fuses punk, disco, krautrock and jazz influences and will appeal to fans of A Certain Ratio, Can, Gang Of Four, Massacre, Stereolab and Arthur Russell. Skill 7 Stamina 12 have strong ties with the London art scene and feature a Dutch chanteuse who sings in a range of languages, underpinned by fearsomely tight rhythmic arrangements.

Fuzz Feat. Cannibal Ox / Snobird Feat. The Pharcyde

New school hip hop producer / DJ / musician Sharkey delivers the music behind Cannibal Ox and the Pharcyde's lyrical accomplishments. The fierceness of Cannibal Ox's track is matched by the bizzare chilled out latin that soundtracks the mighty 'Cyde, as played by GP!

                                                                                                  Travis

                                                                                                  12 Memories

I defy you not to hum and even like the new Travis single - "Re-Offender". It's simply a beautiful pop song. And in the press much has been made of Coldplay's ascent as if music is a competition, like football. Well, by eschewing Nigel Godrich, Mr Multi-Platinium, and producing themselves in such a stripped down, no bullshit, warm and simple way, it's obvious Travis are in it for the ...MUSIC. And mainman Fran has grown into a proper writer of heartfelt socio-political urban hymns. They've swerved off the MOR path and made a close-up, considered, honest and moving record.

                                                                                                    12 Stones

                                                                                                    12 Stones

Mixing the freshness and spontaneity of emocore with the power and intensity of groups like Incubus and Pearl Jam, Louisiana's 12 Stones can have it all. A great vocalist in Paul McCoy (who also appears on the Evanescence no.1) superb guitarist in Eric Weaver and a bass and drum axis of Aaron Gainer and Kevin Dorr that's second to none. The band's debut is both powerful and aggressive, but at the same time seething with anthemic qualities that will impress you straight away. They're young and talented and their producer Jay Baumgardner (Papa Roach, Drowning Pool, Alien Ant Farm)is an enthusiastic fan - 'The enormity of this band is going to shock the industry'. Hyperbole aside this is a stunning debut.

                                                                                                      12 Imaginary Inches

One of the most impressive old skool punk outfits around today, The Stitches are TKO Records' most important Southern California band (also to the current punk music scene too). This is the first Stitches full-length CD from the band voted among the top 10 current punk bands in Spin Magazine's 2001 Punk Rock Special Issue.

                                                                                                        Inspection 12

                                                                                                        In Recovery

New on Honest Don Records. One of Florida best undiscovered acts, that's all about to change with this excellent little opus. The members are barely 20 but the 12 songs on offer here are done with the mastery of a band of old sweats. Exceptional emocore with a feel of The Ataris and Saves The Day about them.
