Dekadrone

Cabaret Voltaire is Richard H. Kirk and "Shadow of Fear" was the band’s first studio album in 26 years and was released in 2020 to critical acclaim. New release Dekadrone delves deeper into Cabaret Voltaire’s arsenal of harsh rhythms and threatening detonations, pairing guttural drone with clipped mechanical idents and snarling LFOs.

    Visionist

    A Call To Arms

Visionist’s first release for Mute is a hypnotic elegy. ‘A Call To Arms’ is Visionist’s third album release and where previously the artist used his vocals as samples, we hear his singing voice in the form of song and lyric for the first time.

Along with the addition of Visionist’s vocals, the album is host to a varied list of collaborators including Haley Fohr (Circuit des Yeux) and Morgan Simpson (Black Midi).

      Martin Gore

      The Third Chimpanzee EP

Even as I place this record on the turntable it feels like a quasi-religious experience - an artefact containing the essence of a living synth god. The primary songwriter and founder member of Depeche Mode returns with five new solo tracks of expressive modular sounds, futuristic industrial and frazzled ecstasy.

From the first skewed saw wave and unexpected off beat this sounds a cut above the rest, and "Howler" quickly develops into a dark and moody electronic brooder, all bursts of ECT at a mogadon pace and pent up aggression. Still, darkest before the dawn and all that, and the segue into the heart-swelling techno-pagan motif in the final third is no less than sublime. Gun fingers abound on "Mandrill", a high octane blast of industrial dancehall a la Krikor, The Bug or maybe even Clipping. - get me to the White Hotel pronto! Moving on to the B-side and we go further into the darkness, pushing through the dense, witching hour paranoia of some super slow n low Salon shit - Tolouse Low Trax style. For "Vervet", Martin incorporates a little Mille Plateaux glitch into his sound palette, creating a trippy slow techno pulser perfect for your next K-hole, before signing off with the twilight melody of "Howler's End", a gorgeous reprise of the opening track.

A truly exceptional work of industrial synthesis. Oh, and the artwork was made by Pockets Warhol, a capuchin monkey based in Canada who paints for charity.

      STAFF COMMENTS

Patrick says: Depeche Mode main man Martin Gore set our presales alight when this new vinyl was announced, and I'm pleased to say it more than lives up to those high expectations. Terse industrial, mechanical dancehall and slow n low Salon tackle abound on this ACE release.

A Certain ratio release four special edition pressings to commemorate the release of their new album ‘ACR LOCO’. ‘I’d Like To See You Again’ is album number four and ACR pushed their sounds into new directions again. This is a more jazz-infused album that continues to receive critical acclaim today after the initial confused reaction, just like all the real classic albums that were misunderstood originally.

            Cabaret Voltaire

            Shadow Of Fear

Shadow of Fear is Cabaret Voltaire’s first studio album in 26 years. Richard H. Kirk is the sole remaining member; he’s released many acclaimed solo albums, having invented bleep techno via his groundbreaking work in Sweet Exorcist. Kirk has formed this new album from a series of pulverising live shows. The tone and personality of CV is ingrained in its core as it dances across techno, dub, house, 1970s Germany and general esoteric explorations coupled with mangled vocal samples.

              STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: As important a document as anything they've done, 'Shadow Of Fear' is a swimming electronic odyssey, split between hypnotic industrial percussion and slowly evolving synth arps, bringing the churning driven thump we know so well, as well as a more playful, danceable backbone. Superb.

                Pole

                Fading

Pole is the project of ground-breaking electronic musician Stefan Betke. The new album Fading is the first since 2015’s Wald. As with every new Pole record, it’s part of a continued forward trajectory but it also connects to a pre-existing sonic framework. “Every Pole record connects to recordings that I've made before,” Betke says, “in order to stay in this kind of vertical development. The ideas from 1, 2, 3 up to now are connected. I keep the interesting elements, languages and vocabulary that I designed and add new elements.” Fading follows the physical released on Mute of remastered versions of his iconic albums 1, 2, 3 to much acclaim.

                  STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: With me and Barry both long term fans, Pole is a long-serving pioneer of dub-techno, glitch and freestyle electronix. He's lost of his pizaza and originality on this new LP.

                    Yann Tiersen

                    Lagniappe Session

THIS IS A RECORD STORE DAY 2020 RELEASE AVAILABLE ONLINE ONLY AS PART OF THE OCTOBER 24TH DROP DAY AT 6PM.
                      LIMITED TO ONE PER PERSON.

Yann Tiersen’s Lagniappe Session is a special limited edition 12” of 3 tracks recorded for the Los Angeles-based audio journal, Aquarium Drunkard. Originally created to support Yann’s most recent album, Portrait, where he re-recorded a number of tracks from throughout his career, these tracks all fit the mood of that recording and Yann’s most recent tours. Pieces that could be described as minimalist are uprooted and placed into entirely different realms, as Tiersen tackles a 16+ minute Steve Reich piece, a classic Françoise Hardy chanson, and a tune by country gospel musician E.C. Ball. In the hands of Tiersen all become transformed.

Back with their first new album in 12 years, a confident and revitalised ACR jumped back into the studio following their most successful tour in over 20 years.

ACR Loco feels like an accumulation of ACR's DNA from point zero in 1977 through to 2020 and sounds like a band who have effortlessly perfected their craft. An album to dance to, cry to, fall in love to and most importantly, to party to.

ACR Loco by the core ACR members Jez Kerr, Martin Moscrop and Donald Johnson, are joined by long term partners Tony Quigley, Denise Johnson and Matt Steele, plus special guests Sink Ya Teeth’s Maria Uzor and Gemma Cullingford, Factory Floor’s Gabe Gurnsey and Manchester luminaries Mike Joyce and Eric Random.

‘Put Your Head Above The Parakeets’ is a brand new EP from HAAi, her second for Mute.  The EP features four brand new tracks including the pseudo title track ‘Head Above The Parakeets’, which exudes a woozy summery heat while ‘Rotating in Unison’ embraces positivity, written in response to this year’s enforced slowdown. The final two tracks take us back to the club, where HAAi is known for spinning genre-bending and spellbinding DJ sets.

                        STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Twisting breakbeat, braindance, brutalist techno and IDM into an utterly postmodern sonic collage, HAAi brings the past into the future wonderfully on this fierce four tracker for Mute.

                        Goldfrapp

                        Supernature - Coloured Vinyl Reissue

Long-awaited vinyl reissue of Goldfrapp’s third album, “Supernature”. This new, collector’s edition of the album is transparent green vinyl, packaged in a gatefold sleeve with an exclusive art print of the original artwork.

Originally “Supernature” marks the point when Goldfrapp brought their sound to an even wider global audience - the Grammy nominated album debuted at #2 in the UK Albums Chart and the album’s lead single, the pulsing, sophisticated, glam-pop dynamo “Ooh La La”, went straight to #4 in the UK Singles Chart.

The album generated further hits in the form of “Number 1”, “Ride a White Horse” and “Fly Me Away”. Described by The Guardian as ‘a brash, beautiful celebration of love and dancing’, the album is a colossal, multi-layered, sonic-pop thriller, a radical, confident, bold record that took a joyous step forward from 2003’s Black Cherry.

                        Daniel Blumberg

                        On&On

On&On, is the brand new album from Daniel Blumberg. A 9-track song-cycle that confirms the London musician and visual artist as a unique creative force, pushing the art of song into expansive new territories.

On&On - which follows 2018’s Minus, Blumberg’s debut for Mute - is a consolidation of the deconstructed song aesthetic he has developed, operating at the intersection between conventional song structures and free improvisation. Now he takes this further, incorporating recurring, shape-shifting motifs and at times dissolving the boundaries between songs altogether.

Born out of live sessions with the same core group of players as Minus: Daniel Blumberg (vocals, guitar, harmonica), Ute Kanngiesser (cello), Billy Steiger (violin), Tom Wheatley (double bass) and Jim White (drums), with the addition of electronic maverick Elvin Brandhi (vocals). As such it represents a deepening of relationships and distillation of techniques for this tight-knit group of free-playing musicians, who are loosely based around Café OTO.

The album is recorded by Peter Walsh (Scott Walker), who has captured the group’s extraordinary performances - encompassing the full expressive range of their instruments from softly-bowed melodies and tender vocal harmonies to rough-hewn scrapes, plucks and rattles - while the sound of the room and the outside world spill naturally into the sound field.

                          The Upward Spiral

The Upward Spiral is Nicolas Bougaïeff’s debut fulllength album release on Mute, following the release of three EPs on the seminal electronic label’s techno offshoot, NovaMute.

The new album explores elements of acid, techno and tempo modulation through a compositional lens, drawing on the Canadian-born, Berlin-based artist’s love for avant-garde forms and longstanding relationship with the electronic music community.

Bougaïeff hails from diverse musical background, having studied in a conservatoire setting whilst foraying into anti-authoritarian rave culture. He is also a respected lecturer, regularly teaching masterclasses in composition and speaking at global events such as Mutek and Ableton Loop.
Following the completion of his PhD on minimal techno at the University of Huddersfield, Bougaïeff designed the controllers for Richie Hawtin’s Plastikman Live tour, and co-founded Liine, the company behind the landmark music app Lemur used by astronaut Alexander Gerst on the International Space Station in a live jam with Kraftwerk.

Pole, aka musician, producer and mastering engineer Stefan Betke releases the remastered reissues of his debut album releases, 1, 2 and 3 as a box set. Released on vinyl (for the first time in nearly 20 years) and CD (remastered since its 2008 reissue), the box set release marks 20 years since the trilogy was completed and a return to the label for the groundbreaking artist.

Pole 1 (1998), Pole 2 (1999) and Pole 3 (2000), originally released as three consecutive albums in their own right, and described by The Wire as “…a set of roadmaps for the soul”, are presented together to highlight Pole’s deliberate statement - reinforced by the titling of the albums and their minimalist monochrome cover art.

Waves Of Anzac / The Journey

Waves of Anzac / The Journey is Mick Harvey's first soundtrack release in over 10 years. The album features two recent soundtracks to powerful subject matters recorded by Mick Harvey. The first, Waves of Anzac looks at Sam Neill’s personal family history interwoven with the history of the First World War and the Anzacs through to the modern era while the second, The Journey, is a four-part composition released in support of #KidsOffNauru, a campaign working for the child refugees and people seeking asylum who find themselves in offshore detention.

Waves of Anzac is a 10-track score, created for the ABC documentary on forgotten war stories and lives lost, a personal history by the actor Sam Neill (Jurassic Park, The Piano) set against a contemporary increasingly divided political backdrop. ‘Why Anzac? with Sam Neill’ (Dir. KrivStenders, 2015) is named for the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (Anzac) who served together in the Gallipoli Campaign, their first engagement in World War I and continued as a military unit until after WW2. The film is a look at this pivotal point in our shared history, and the impact it still has on a personal and on a geopolitical level. Harvey recently examined this period via the prism of a fictional soldier/poet for his collaboration with Christopher Richard Barker, The Fall and Rise of Edgar Bourchier and the Horrors of War.

The Journey is a four-part composition, recorded with The Letter String Quartet, in support of people seeking asylum who have found themselves in Australia’s offshore detention program. The piece was composed as a study of the hardships endured by the detainees on Nauru, Manus Island and Christmas Island before and during their internment and as an expression of hope for a humane outcome to their plight.

                                          Y Live

The Y Live album is an essential addendum to the original release, one that captures all the fierce urgency of The Pop Group’s live performances at the time. Comprised of Y era recordings captured at a variety of locations including New York, Manchester & Brussels – the latter on a bill with William Burroughs and Joy Division – Y Live exemplifies what had proved so thrilling about The Pop Group. A snapshot of a time when the group were sharing stages with future acolytes including Cabaret Voltaire, Linton Kwesi Johnson & Public Image Ltd, Mark Stewart describes the recordings as attempts to ‘paint the impossible’.

“If you live long enough, you see a lot of people drift in and out of your life,” says Lee Ranaldo, explaining one of the loose themes linking the adventurous pieces that compose his and collaborator RaülRefree’s electrifying new album: that of the ineffable course of time, and the lives that pass in and out of one’s own.

In a remarkable career that has seen him flourish as a songwriter, a singer, a guitarist, a noisemaker, a poet, a visual artist, a producer, and more, Ranaldo has seen many fellow quixotics – from his bandmates in Sonic Youth to this most recent collaboration with RaülRefree, whose restless career had taken him from hard-core bands in his youth, to the vanguard of a new movement redefining flamenco. One of the most renowned producers in southern Europe, his collaboration with Rosalíaon her debut album has shaped both the modern sound of flamenco and her new found stardom.

Following their collaborative work on 2017’s Electric Trim which saw Refree in the guise of producer and the subsequent tours supporting that album, they went back into the studio but the duo quickly realised they weren’t recording a new Lee Ranaldo solo album, but rather their first as Lee Ranaldo and Raul Refree – “the beginning of a new partnership, a new configuration’”, Ranaldo says. “We’re a two-headed machine,” adds Refree. “We’re both talking about everything. We don’t always agree on everything, but every song, every piece, every sound you hear comes from two people talking about it.”

Throbbing Gristle announce the next phase of their reissues series with the release of ‘Part Two: The Endless Not’ / ‘TG Now’ and ‘A Souvenir Of Camber Sands’. In 2004 Chris Carter, Peter Christopherson, Genesis P- Orridge and Cosey Fanni Tutti reformed - 23 years after their mission was originally terminated - and between 2004 and 2007 the band released 14 new studio tracks and a live album of their appearance at ATP’s Nightmare Before Christmas in Camber Sands.

‘A Souvenir Of Camber Sands’ is a live document of Throbbing Gristle’s performance at Jake and Dinos Chapman’s All Tomorrow's Parties Nightmare Before Christmas at Camber Sands in December 2004. Throbbing Gristle are renowned for their documentation of live performances - ‘TG24’ (which was reissued in 2002) and ‘TG+’ (released in 2004) collated their live recordings up until the band disbanded. This release reactivated the band’s live performance documentations that include ‘Thirty Second Annual Report’ (from La Villette, Paris) and the ‘Desertshore Installation’ (from the ICA, London).

Plunge Remix is a new compilation of remixed Fever Ray songs. Fever Ray is the solo project of the Knife’s Karin Dreijer and ‘Plunge’ was the first release in eight years since her celebrated self-titled debut in 2009. Remixers were chosen with the goal of creating music for Fever Ray to dance to. Released over a period of almost two years, the tracks will now sit together for the first time. The A-side opens with the full throttle electro-house of Tami T's remix of "Mustn't Hurry", before Bunny Michael incorporates future proofed R&B and footwork into a fresh mix of "IDK About You", a perfect companion to the psychedelic freakout Faka cooks up on the A3. On the B-side, Karin's bro and Knife companion Olof Dreijer gets slinky with a wonderful organic techno mix of "Wanna Sip", fellow art-synther Glasser conjures an epic space-synth translation of "Falling" while Sissel Wincent merges trance and techno in a huge floor melter to close the side. The intensity continues on the C1 as r&S affiliate Paula Temple slams a Berghain sized wrecking ball through "This Country", before a stepping UK bass styled mix from Aasthma offers a bit of rhythmic variation. Lisbon's usually breakneck DJ Marfox sticks to a relatively stately 130 with a bleeping twist on "Plunge" which manages to sound like a lost UR set from a Portuguese slum, while personal favourite Tzusing closes the package out with a chugging industrial incarnation of "Mustn't Hurry" tailor made for our current dystopia.

Barry says: One of the most legendary voices in modern classical and sountrackery (who could forget the 2001's 'Amélie'?) joins us with his most recent outing, a revisiting of some of his most unforgettable moments, and joined by some of the most important voices in modern music (John Grant, Stephen O'Malley of Sunn, Blonde Redhead etc.) a stunning collection, and yet more proof Tiersen stands as the figurehead he does today.

                                                  The Pop Group

                                                  Y - Definitive Edition

This is the 40th Anniversary Edition of The Pop Group’s highly influential and innovative debut album ‘Y’ released in 1979, remastered (from the original tapes) and cut half speed at Abbey Road.

The Pop Group’s Y regularly appears in ‘Greatest Album’ lists - such as Pitchfork’s Greatest Albums of the 70’s where it is listed at #35, The Wire’s 100 Most Important Records Ever Made and Uncut Magazine’s 100 Greatest Debut Albums. The Vinyl and CD deluxe sets will include the debut single 'She Is Beyond Good And Evil' (also remastered). The package will also include the 10 track album Alien Blood, and the album titled Y Live.

Alien Blood is the result of the band’s meticulous process of revisiting the original 2” tapes of their studio sessions and recordings, unearthing never-before-heard material, including the studio recording of ‘Kiss The Book’, gloves off version of ‘We Are Time (Ricochet)’, and ‘Words Disobey Me (Dennis The Menace Mix)’ whilst exposing the raw skeletons of iconic tracks such as the original velocity of ‘Thief of Fire (Bass Addict).’ Alien Blood reveals the life of Y before everything was finalized, exposing revelatory dimensions within these iconic works.

The Pop Group went on to release 2 further singles, We Are All Prostitutes and Where There Is A Will (Split single with the Slits) and 1 further studio album For How Much Do We Tolerate Mass Murder, before splitting up in 1981. Mark Stewart from the band embarked on a solo career releasing his pioneering album Learning To Cope With Cowardice in 1983. Gareth Sager and Bruce Smith went on to form Rip Rig & Panic alongside Neneh Cherry. The Pop Group reformed in 2010 to tour and have since released 2 new studio albums.

Laura says: "She Is Beyond Good And Evil" was my first introduction to the Pop Group in the late 80s at indie night The Wilde Club. On the strength of that track I bought this LP and played it to death and it remains one of my favourite albums. Now remastered it also includes a 12” of the track that made me fall for them them in the first place. Totally uncompromising post-punk genius!

                                                    Swans

                                                    Leaving Meaning.

'Leaving meaning.' is the band’s fifteenth studio album, the follow up to 2016’s 'The Glowing Man'. Written and produced by Michael Gira, the album features contributions from recent and former Swans, members of Angels of Light as well as Anna and Maria von Hausswolff, Ben Frost, The Necks, Baby Dee and Jennifer Gira.

Michael Gira explains, “leaving meaning. is the first Swans album to be released since I dissolved the lineup of musicians that constituted Swans from 2010 – 2017. Swans is now comprised of a revolving cast of musicians, selected for both their musical and personal character, chosen according to what I intuit best suits the atmosphere in which I’d like to see the songs I’ve written presented. In collaboration with me, the musicians, through their personality, skill and taste, contribute greatly to the arrangement of the material. They’re all people whose work I admire and whose company I personally enjoy.”

                                                      STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Michael Gira is a man who clearly can't quit (nor should he). Having given up on the band a number of times, in the midst smashing out some truly amazing albums, he always returns. This iteration of the band includes all the sounds we'd expect from Gira but bolstered by the perfectly selected cast of collaborators and co-conspirators.

                                                      Throbbing Gristle’s Greatest Hits

Genesis P. Orridge was the Frank Zappa of experimental electronic music, exploring virtually every notion and idea of performance that he could possibly muster. And his period with Throbbing Gristle resulted in some of the most dense and difficult music to ever see the light of day, a staggering thought even decades after the band's demise. Turning the idea of rock music on its head and injecting it with a lethal dose of electronica, Gristle was light years ahead of its time and suffered endless persecution from the British government because of their wild ideas. On this ironically titled collection, the band offers 11 tracks that plant the seeds for a number of genres. Synth pop is here in the primal, awkward guise of "Adrenalin," while "Hot on the Heels of Love" may be one of the very first techno songs ever. "Subhuman" would set the standard for the type of ranting industrial rock that Skinny Puppy and Ministry would actually have to water down, and "Six Six Sixties" is the sort of guitar-driven noise narrative which would later find brief popularity with the New York City art rock scene.  Standing heads and tails above the rest of their contemporaries, this is the best place to first discover Throbbing Gristle's difficult but rewarding body of work. Anyone with even a passing interest in unusual and experimental music would do themselves a big favor by checking this out.

A hugely ambitious, widescreen and epic record that recalls everything from the far away electronics of Basic Channel and Carl Craig, through the skewed songwriting of Postal Service, Flaming Lips and Grandaddy to the euphoric sound-scapes of Sigur Ros and My Bloody Valentine, We Can Create is a work of heart stopping extremes.

The album was recorded without computers, preferring the painstaking process of splicing sounds together on MAPS’ battered 16 track recorder in his Northamptonshire bedroom, the results were subsequently co-produced by Valgeir Sigurdsson (Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, Bjork) and mixed by Ken Thomas (Sigur Ros, Hope Of The States). The critically acclaimed album was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 2007.

For the celebrated show ∑(No,12k,Lg,17Mif) New Order + Liam Gillick: So it goes .., New Order deconstructed, rethought and rebuilt a wealth of material from throughout their career: familiar and obscure, old and new.

Featuring tracks such as Disorder, from Joy Divisions Unknown Pleasures and not played live for 30 years, up to 2015’s Plastic from New Order’s critically acclaimed Top 5 album Music Complete - this is the perfect document of those magical 5 nights. The album was recorded live on 13th July 2017 and includes the full show and encore plus 3 additional tracks recorded over the residency to give listeners a full representation of the breadth of material performed.

This special series of intimate shows took over Stage 1 of Manchester’s iconic Old Granada Studios for five nights in June 2017. Created in collaboration with visual artist Liam Gillick, who has previously presented solo exhibitions at venues such as Tate Britain and MoMA in New York; and orchestrated by composer-arranger Joe Duddell, a fellow son of Manchester and a frequent collaborator with the band, the live show was performed by the band with a 12-strong synthesiser ensemble from the Royal Northern College of Music.

The catalogue is given a renewed and invigorated twist, showing another side to an already venerable set of classic songs. An essential piece for any fans, and another reason New Order retain the status they've held for so long.

Loss.’ is a career-defining, ambitious album that sees the bedroom producer step out of the bedroom with his most collaborative project to date, including work with classical ensemble The Echo Collective, percussionists and guest vocalists from across the world.

These stunning, immersive and impressionistic songs, scored and produced by Maps himself, are inspired by an orchestral approach and by the rolling Northamptonshire countryside beyond the window of his studio, which provides peace, isolation and inspiration.

“I wanted to push everything to the limit with this record, and explore new territory for Maps. The orchestral instrumentation and addition of other musicians and singers played a huge part in finding the purer and more human emotion I was searching for. I learnt the violin as I was growing up, so I’m glad it finally came in useful!” (Maps)

Three years in the making, ‘Colours. Reflect. Time. Loss.’ is informed by the richness of life experience. It is an album he could only have made now and one that represents a creative reinvention for Maps.

A shining and spine-tingling collection, an absolute career high.

They show a young mind curious about electronic sound and melody, yet sound like a fully formed album that should never have been left in the archive for 40+ years. Speaking to Billboard, he explains “It’s a very dynamic period in the world; a lot of people are feeling that they’re struggling to see how the future will unfold for them and whether or not they’ll have a place in the future. And that’s what a lot of these songs are about.”

At the age of 16, Simon Bonney formed Crime And The City Solution in an abandoned building in Sydney’s business district. The band embodied the post punk ethos of nihilism and alienation and Simon’s lyrics and music were informed in part by life as a 14-year-old runaway in 1970’s Kings Cross, Sydney’s red-light district. In 1984, after a move to London, Simon formed a new incarnation of the band with Bad Seed Mick Harvey, Rowland S Howard (The Birthday Party), Harry Howard (These Immortal Souls) and Epic Soundtracks (Swell Maps). After four beautifully chaotic records, a run of cacophonous live shows in Europe and the US and a standout performance in Wim Wenders’ 1980s masterpiece ‘Wings Of Desire’, the band broke up and Simon and Mick relocated to West Berlin. Here Simon would form the longest lasting line up, the Berlin Crime And The City Solution, which featured Simon, Mick, Alexander Hacke (Einstürzende Neubauten), Bronwyn Adams, Thomas Stern and Chrislo Hass (DAF). From the band’s first offering, ‘Shine’, through their final album, ‘The Adversary Live’, the band was championed by influential journalists, with its albums regularly showing up in the Best Of lists.

In 1992, with Crime And The City Solution on hiatus, Simon moved to the US on an impulse, stayed for a decade and released two records; the much loved and very personal ‘Forever’ and the socio-political ‘Everyman’, a record that has grown in relevance as rapid change and social dislocation has increased.

In imagining the perfect soundtrack to these observations, he turned to the melancholy and plaintive sounds of dobro and lap steel of 1970s country music, the sound of longing for the familiar, for security and stability, songs about family and belonging, memories of a childhood farm in Tasmania. The result was two country tinged, compassionate and prescient portraits of life in late 20th Century America through Tasmanian eyes.

His path led him into outback Australia, Micronesia, Papua New Guinea and Bangladesh - a life rich in extremes of colour and conflict, of trauma, of humanity and inhumanity, of power and powerlessness. It was not always easy to witness and eventually, as happens with all that walk this road, he had seen too much and it was time to stop. It was time to re-embrace something simple, something personal - his music. He pulled tapes from shoeboxes and listened to the old albums as well as tracks recorded for an unreleased album, ‘Eyes Of Blue’, recorded in Detroit with a band featuring Matt Smith (Outrageous Cherry, the Volbeats), Troy Gregory (the Dirtbombs, Electric Six, Killing Joke) and a guest appearance by Chuck Prophet and found that, far from sounding nostalgic, they sounded fresh and every bit as relevant - if not more relevant - than when he had recorded them.

Beginning in 2011 following the death of two relatives in Aleppo, K Á R Y Y N left her native LA for Cherry Valley, upstate New York to process her grief in seclusion. During the 18 months she lived in Cherry Valley, K Á R Y Y N wrote two songs for "The Quanta Series". The first was a visceral, emotional piece recorded in one take called "Today I Read Your Life Story 11:11". The second, a musing on impermanence and understanding the impact of our choices called "Segment & The Line".

Over the years that followed, K Á R Y Y N spent time living in Berlin where she wrote "Purgatory!, a song inspired by a memory from her childhood spent in the Forty Mountains of Idlib province in Syria. As she travelled, she found inspiration everywhere, leaning into her own familial legacy, feelings of grief and love and observations on human interaction. A deep connection to her lineage is a concurrent theme in K Á R Y Y N’s work, with an interpretation of traditional Armenian folk song "Ambets Gorav" present on the album plus a beautiful choral patchwork called "Mirror Me" providing an introspective break in the album - a track about 'facing yourself, the good, the bad; searching for the parts in us that have been lost.'

Rife with changes in pace and unexpected slabs of withering gloom before launching once again into a euphoric resolution. It's a gorgeous LP and one that reveals more on every subsequent listen.

"LP5" is Apparat’s first release since 2013’s "Krieg und Frieden" (Music for Theatre), and follows two studio albums, "II" and "III" (Mute / Monkeytown) by Moderat, the trio he founded with Modeselektor’s Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary.

Sublime and delicate, the album finds greatness in small things and in unexpected twists; it joins musical fragments together and glows from the cracks in between. For Ring, it is also a document of artistic insight and autonomy. 'I was only able to make the record this way because Moderat exists,' he says. 'Having a huge stage with Moderat gave me a setting for grand gestures and meant I could unburden Apparat from these aspirations. I don't have to write big pop hymns here; I can just immerse myself in the details and the structures.'

Still hymnic, "LP5" doesn’t rely on dramatic gestures and theatrical amplification, instead it lives off delicately sculpted sounds crackling alongside filigree beeping and twitching.

Like previous Apparat albums, the new release sees Sascha Ring collaborate with cellist Philipp Thimm and on the album you can also hear trombone, trumpet and saxophone, a harp, a double bass and other strings. Tracks were developed over endless group improvisations and lavish orchestral sessions – some of these sessions are only apparent in the final mix as fluttering echoes, just barely noticeable. The album was recorded in Berlin at AP4, JRS, Vox-Ton & Hansa Studios, mixed by Gareth Jones and Sascha Ring.

From elegiac techno to deep orchestral pop ballads, Apparat‘s work has always had a common denominator: an elegance that embraces and gives nuanced layers of detail and a near universal beauty.

The album, mixed and co-produced by Gareth Jones, continues the themes of environment and a connection to nature first explored on EUSA, incorporating recordings from outside of Brittany, such as the redwood forests of California as well as field recordings from Tempelhof airport in Berlin (on ‘Tempelhof’), plus guest vocalists.

It's a stunningly delicate, but beautifully emotive collection, more classically focused than Arnalds or Frahm but as tender as either (i'm not throwing shade here, i'm mad for a good pianist). Beautiful.

‘Learning To Cope With Cowardice’, the groundbreaking debut solo album by visionary post punk iconoclast Mark Stewart, is to be given a definitive reissue alongside ‘The Lost Tapes’, a newly discovered cache of unreleased material.

‘Learning To Cope With Cowardice’ is a vital chapter in the legacy of Mark Stewart & The Maffia, a project that would prove to be a revolutionary benchmark for many, from the innovators of the ‘Bristol Sound’ (The Wild Bunch, Smith & Mighty, Tricky, Massive Attack) through to the likes of Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails. Collected together this set realizes an expansive restoration of one of Stewart’s most audacious statements. As it was in the early 1980s so it is now, ‘Learning To Cope With Cowardice’ is a masterwork of mutant design and a rude awakening of extraordinary bite.

Mark Stewart himself perceives ‘The Lost Tapes’ as a document that now possesses a storied significance: “It was a real adventure discovering this forbidden history, a twisted tale of Muswell hillbillies, French pirates and a Dutch schizophrenic doctor doing psychic archaeology.” Whilst Adrian Sherwood describes these works as characteristic of a distinct primitivism: “[‘The Lost Tapes’ represent] the early childhood of the songs before Mark and me conducted frenzied, scorched earth, slash-and-burn, twenty hour mental, manic editing sessions at Crass’ studios that led to birthing the finished album.”

No in a deluxe reissue format including a bonus disc of Lost Tapes, it still sound amazing.

A startling, thought-provoking record, it follows their 2016 debut, Spiritual Songs for Lovers to Sing. Shot full of incisive social commentary, Love Hates What You Become captures the couple at their most musically raw and visceral.

The band wrote the album in Ellery’s native Manchester before traveling to Los Angeles to record with producer John Congleton, known for his Grammy-winning work with St. Vincent, Swans, Explosions in the Sky and Sigur Rós. Congleton introduced the band to Swans drummer Thor Harris, who plays on the record. “We were without a drummer or a real band,” explains Ellery. “I just concentrated on writing the songs rather than making a sound. We turned up in LA with that as our starting point, this collection of Guitar & Piano demos that I’d sent through.”

Those demos included some of the most accomplished song writing of his career to date, such as momentous album closer ‘For The Wild’. “I started writing that song years ago almost as a pastiche of trying to write real this rock’n’roll saviour,” he reminisces. “The rock’n’roll revolutionary feels such a culturally irrelevant cliché now, we’re living in a mechanised world seemingly indifferent to the longings of the human soul.”

A striking difference from their debut record is the prominence of Ebony’s vocals, notable on the album’s formidable ‘Bunny’s Blues’. “Creating this character of Bunny began with a performance piece I did back in Amsterdam,” Ebony explains. “She became a playful tool to confront how male-dominated society attempts to control both women and nature without having any real understanding or respect for their being and innate power.”

Remixes from Chris Carter’s "Chemistry Lessons Volume One.1: Coursework" alongside a new piece - "Bongo Glow".

A work in progress at the time the album was completed, "Bongo Glow" was completed using the same processes as the rest of "CCCLV1", and it juusst about made the cut for the Japanese release date. But for you lucky listeners Mute have ensured its inclusion here. A slowly morphing, elasticated track with mangled, computerized vox, playful melodies and push-pull rhythms; it's deliciously quirky and textured and should appeal to both die hard electronica fans and lovers of leftfield pop.

The additional three reworkings included here were created without direct instruction as an experiment to see how they changed with input from external sources. Daniel Avery’s remix of "Usyring" is a slow building, mesmerizing industrial pounder which fits perfectly with the producer's current MO.

Meanwhile The Radiophonic Workshop took "Blissters" and created a more experimental reworking exectued in their unique style and Chris Liebing gives "Tones Map" a brooding end-of-world type feel, adding his 'Slow Burn' remix technique.

Irmin Schmidt explains, “The tracks are spontaneous meditations, only played once and recorded simultaneously - no edits or corrections. They are formed from an emotional memory in which Schubert, Cage, Japan (Gagaku) and Can are equally present.”

5 Klavierstücke, was recorded and produced by Gareth Jones in the South of France on Irmin Schmidt's two grand pianos. Schmidt partly prepared his Pleyel piano, in the way he was taught by John Cage himself, and the other piano - Irmin Schmidt’s 100-year-old Steinway - remained unprepared. Several pieces were recorded in one session on the prepared piano only, others contain recordings from both pianos. All ambient sounds were recorded on site - around Irmin Schmidt's studio - and there are no other instruments or electronics of any kind.

Stand out tracks include "The Man With The Golden Arm" from the briliantly noir-ish "Moss Side Story" and "Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Pelvis" from 1996's "Oedipus Schmoedipus" featuring Jarvis Cocker on vocals, along with "Parade" by Magazine and "From Her To Eternity" from his days as a Bad Seed.

THE PICCADILLY RECORDS REISSUE/COLLECTION OF THE YEAR 2018.

A Certain Ratio were born of the Manchester punk/post punk explosion of the late 70s, but while they took on the bleak aggression of the former and the spiky experimentation of the latter, they were rooted in another tradition. By the time their second single, the incredible opium funk dream of "Flight" was released in 1980 on Factory Records, it was obvious that the apparently unlikely union of brooding post punk with dub and funk rhythms was a marriage made in heaven - If heaven is the right word.

"Set" follows their current set list (hence the title), pulling material from across their incredibly diverse career. It's perhaps only fitting that two thirds of the collection dates from 1979-1986, while they were signed to Factory, when they arguably produced their finest and most inventive material. If "Shack Up" added a mutant snarl to the Banbarra classic and "Flight" was eerie and sublime, "Knife Slits Water" was a signpost for their future direction, moving away from the paranoia and angst of their earlier sound and introducing a lighter and more loose limbed samba, jazz dance and tropical funk groove. The brighter feel was further cemented by "Wild Party", a moody boogie blend incorporating street soul and electro which perfectly conjured it's title, and the P-funk genius of "Mickey Way” which went on, appropriately enough, to become a Hacienda favourite.

The move to A & M brought another diversion, into acid house euphoria, represented here by "Good Together"; this, and the silky, emotive pop of "Won't Stop Loving You", here remixed by Bernard Sumner, were both enhanced by the gorgeous vocal talents of Denise Johnson. There is new material here too, in the shape of "Dirty Boy" featuring Barry Adamson; but, even leaving aside the astonishing span and prolific nature of their output, what is truly amazing is that through all the extraordinary range of their sound they have always maintained a distinct and coherent identity. That takes real talent.

Remastered. On the recommendation of Robert Wyatt, RAI originally commissioned Cosey Fanni Tutti to create a sound work based on the theme of ‘A Journey Through The Body’. It became a Throbbing Gristle project which was later broadcast by RAI. This was the last studio recording by Throbbing Gristle. It was recorded in five days, a day per body section. No tracks were re-recorded or added to after their day. Each track was mixed immediately after recording. No tracks were pre-planned; all tracks were invented directly to tape.

‘Burn Slow’ is a minimalist electronic epic and the start of a new chapter for one of techno’s leading authorities. It might not be what you expect for a DJ synonymous with fast, hard and heavy techno but, according to Chris Liebing, he’s always been something of a slow starter: “I’ve wanted to do something like ‘Burn Slow’ all my life,” he says.

While retaining the framework of the techno beats that Chris Liebing has dedicated his life to for the past 25 years, here he also seeks out new harmonic territories, taking aim at the heart rather than the feet, in order to tackle some deep themes. The key concept of presence - the idea that everything is happening in this moment and that everything in the past is mere memory - form the thematic backbone of the record. It’s something Liebing got in touch with via philosopher Alan Watts, not to mention decades of getting entire dancefloors lost in the present: “If people would stay in the now, everything in the world would just have a bit more harmony,” explains Liebing.

Liebing has teamed up with Ralf Hildenbeutel (a key part of the long since defunct Eye Q family) for ‘Burn Slow’ and it was at his new musical ‘enabler’ Hildenbeutel’s Frankfurt studio that Liebing began drifting into new territory.

At the pulsing heart of the group are Josh Hager, Jeff Friedl, Tom Chapman and Phil Cunningham. For DEVO, Hager plays guitars and keyboards, whilst Friedl plays drums; in their hitherto day-job with New Order, Chapman and Cunningham play bass and guitars respectively.

“We got on straight away because we had a lot in common, a lot of similar records in our collections – Kraftwerk, early 80s punk bands, electro, Joy Division,” says Tom. “And Josh had one of the DEVO plant pot hats in his studio. That was my first question: what’s that?!”

With the band's debut long-player, they are joined by diverse collaborators that each contribute a distinct twist to the sound; with combined credentials including work with luminaries spanning A Certain Ratio, Electronic, The Verve and Elbow.

Nick McCabe flexes his much-loved guitar sound across two of the album’s tracks, Even So and Marigold. Meanwhile, Denise Johnson lends her soaring vocal presence to no-less-than six of the album’s tracks, including incoming single Celebrate.

Also crashing the party is LA-based DJ Whitney Fierce, who appears on backing vocals, and Joe Duddell, the Manchester-based arranger who has lent his orchestral finesse to the likes of Elbow, Blossoms, and New Order; for whom he created and scored a 12-piece synth orchestra for a run of Manchester International Festival shows.

It's the sound of a blast. SHADOWPARTY burst through your speakers; pulsing electronics get swept away with lush orchestrations, bold 80s-fused beats get carved up by haunting guitars and vocals tower through each moment, whispering sweet harmonies and unspoken despair.

“When you break that mould and you’re open and receptive to each other’s styles, then it kind of opens up an entirely new world.” says Jeff.

Signed to Mute, the band’s debut album is set to drop early in 2018; it was recorded in Boston, LA, Manchester and, of course, Macclesfield. The party will go live shortly afterwards, dates for a tour will follow.

Turn the lights down. Turn the sound up.

Written and recorded following a transformative sojourn in New York in late 1980, the album reflects Latin, samba and even jazz influences (eg Skipscada; Day One), while still retaining Ratio’s signature brittle funk textures, heard in full effect on Lucinda, Gum and trancelike floor filler Knife Slits Water. .

It's definitely got something that the other albums haven’t.”

'The songs are timeless and true to ACR's roots,' says Donald Johnson. 'The emphasis was placed on keeping it simple in the studio. Trickery was kept to a minimum and we never took more than three takes on any track.' Adds Martin Moscrop: 'Most songs we jammed in rehearsal one week and recorded the next, so that they were rough round the edges. And the lyrics are some of the best Jez has ever produced. You'll also hear old ACR influences throughout the album. "Teri" was actually the first song ACR ever wrote, but it has never been recorded or released until now.'

‘1/1’ is the soundtrack to Jeremy Phillips’ directorial debut, due to be released in July 2018. Starring Lindsey Shaw (‘Pretty Little Liars’), Judd Nelson (‘Breakfast Club’, ‘St Elmo’s Fire’) and Dendrie Taylor (‘Star Trek Generations’, ‘Twins’), the film submerges the viewer into the mind of Lissa, a 20-year-old girl in rural Pennsylvania and her struggles with sex, drugs, love and loss. Liars have created an electronic soundtrack that reflects the film’s use of mixed media abstractions and multi-film formats, which undoubtedly stands up as an album in its own right.

Every bit the standalone piece, and perfectly fitted to the film as well. Great stuff.

The band introduced the avant-garde elements of funk, jazz, electronics, tape loops and technology to the pop song, wrapping it in a post punk aesthetic, adding great clothes and the coolest haircuts.

Alive and well and on A&M after the Factory split, A Certain Ratio were in euphoric and emotive form for 1989’s Good Together. Bursting with the boundless positivity of the acid house era, the LP sees ACR divert their usual funk into the baggy sound of the time, exploiting conventional song structures to convey themes of togetherness and hope. Soulful, smooth and packed with proper anthems, including the saucy eyed serenade ‘The Big E’ and the wriggling acid pop of the title track, ‘Good Together’ remains the ACR of choice for ageing ravers everywhere.

Springing forth from the punk era of the late 70s, A Certain Ratio carved their own niche by marrying the gloom and gristle of the Manchester's Factory era with a whole load of groove. Hailed universally as pioneers of what became known as ‘punk funk’ thanks to the success of ‘Shack Up’ on both sides of the Atlantic, their sound is not easily pigeon holed and their influence can never be understated. The band introduced the avant-garde elements of funk, jazz, electronics, tape loops and technology to the pop song, wrapping it in a post punk aesthetic, adding great clothes and the coolest haircuts.

If Good Together saw A Certain Ratio translating the acid house ethos through conventional song, Up In Downsville was a sweat drenched return to the heart of the dance floor. Released on Rob Gretton’s plainly named imprint, the LP shuffles through melodic house, slick acid jazz and brooding electro-funk, pulling together the disparate strands of Manchester’s clubland into one infectious whole. The groove is king throughout but never hits harder than on LP closer Up In Downsville Pt.2, a flute led masterpiece of Mancunian funk which forms a wonderful contrast to enduring Balearic classic ‘Salvador’s (Fish)’, the album’s finest moment.

An astonishing work, the record weds an improvisational, free-music ethos to the rawest emotional songwriting, rooted deep in the personal turmoil Blumberg experienced whilst making the record.

The album was recorded live with legendary producer Peter Walsh (Scott Walker’s collaborator since ‘Climate Of Hunter’) in just five days during a remote residential stay in Wales, amidst a debilitating breakup with his partner of seven years along with Blumberg's ongoing struggle with mental illness which resulted in his hospitalization just a week before recording.

Still only 27 years old, Blumberg has written himself a rich musical history; from his teenage band who signed to XL whilst he was still at school, onto and through the projects of Yuck, Oupa and Hebronix, whilst solidifying close creative partnerships with the likes of David Berman (Silver Jews), Low, Lambchop and Royal Trux’s Neil Michael Hagerty (with whom Blumberg has performed as a member of the Howling Hex).

With ‘Minus’, though, there is a sense that Daniel Blumberg has finally arrived at the place he has been searching for - an arresting and progressive work, one which is set to establish him as one of Britain’s most unique contemporary voices.

Pearson presents ‘The Straight Hits!’, an album which began as a mere creative exercise - each song had to follow certain parameters, described as The Five Pillars - and one that has given Pearson the freedom to write a lighter, more ‘straight’ album.

In three days, Pearson had penned nine whole songs (the album also includes a cover of Austin Americana singer/songwriter Jonathan Terrell’s wonderful country tribute song ‘Damn Straight’). The album is a departure from years of long form songwriting with tunes meant to hit straight and to the point.

‘The Straight Hits!’ features multiple different flavours of country, rock and all points in between, taking in blasts of goofy shit-kicking country-punk (opener ‘Straight To The Top!’,); cataclysmic rock & roll playing its romantic drama at high-stakes (‘Loved Straight To Hell); aching folksy mourn (‘Dire Straights Of Love’) and even a bona fide love song, ‘A Love Song (Set Me Straight)’, which Pearson admits breaks several of the Five Pillars but obeys an unwritten Sixth Pillar: Musical rules are made to be broken. There’s new Josh T. Pearson music in the world and it’s joyful, giddy, lifeaffirming stuff.

Aaron Hemphill announces details of his debut solo album, ‘Scented Pictures’. Released under the name Nonpareils, these are his first recordings since an amicable departure from Liars in 2016.

The songs on ‘Scented Pictures’, recorded by Hemphill in Berlin, are directly inspired by concepts relating to memories, or more accurately the sensory experience of memory. The tracks brim with poppy ideas and lush colour, yet their structures aim at defying logic, filtering the songs into strange new psychedelic corners. Hemphill believes that encouraging the brain to fill in the gaps in something - be it a piece of music or a specific memory - leads to an amplified, more vivid experience for the listener. The snippets of sound and image inside ‘Scented Pictures’’ songs were mostly culled from the musician’s own memory and tinted by his entry into a new solo phase in his career.

Seventeen years on from his last solo release, the twenty-five tracks collected on Chris Carter’s Chemistry Lessons Volume One (CCCL Volume 1) were the product of six years spent working on solo material in the Norfolk home studio he shares with Cosey Fanni Tutti. CCCL Volume 1 reinforces Carter’s significant but often under-appreciated role in the development of electronic music - a journey that for Carter started ahead of his work with Throbbing Gristle (alongside Cosey, Peter ‘Sleazy’ Christopherson and Genesis Breyer P-Orridge), and continued through Chris & Cosey, Carter Tutti, Carter Tutti Void as well as his own solo and collaborative releases under his own name.

Here you will find music with a distinctly futuristic leaning, with insistent melodic patterns and a distinct sense of wonderment at the limitless possibilities of science. “If there’s an influence on the album, it’s definitely ‘60s radiophonic,” Carter agrees. “Over the last few years I’ve also been listening to old English folk music, almost like a guilty pleasure, and so some of tracks on the album hark back to an almost ingrained DNA we have for those kinds of melodies. They’re not dissimilar to nursery rhymes in some ways.”

That combination of traditional music and the backing track for exciting, potential futures gives tracks like ‘Moon Two’ and ‘Tangerines’ a sheen of inquisitiveness and quiet euphoria, while ‘Modularity’ and ‘Roane’ have an anxious, sci-fi noir charm. Elsewhere, the skewed voices of the meditative ‘Cernubicua’ add a calming, human note to the album, even if deciphering any specific lyrical content is largely impossible. “That's completely intentional,” says Carter. “Sleazy and I had worked together on ways of developing a sort of artificial singing using software and hardware. This was me trying to take it a step further. I've taken lyrics, my own voice or people's voices from a collection that I'd put together with Sleazy, and I’ve chopped them up and done all sorts of weird things with them.”

Carter began the foundation work for what became CCCL Volume 1 in the years before Sleazy passed away in 2010, and the death of Carter’s fellow TG journeyman had a profound effect on the development of the album. “I’d been accumulating a lot of material, just tracks and elements of tracks, and I was going to start putting it together just before Sleazy died,” he says. “That’s what completely threw me, and that’s partly why it’s taken so long, because of dealing with the shock of that.” Carter describes going through a long grieving process which manifested itself in some of the darker, more introspective tracks appearing on the album.

Here we get a distillation of his influences from minimal wave industrial into cosmic and krautrock. Brilliantly evocative and enthralling.

Formed in 1978, the band had various members throughout their career, and a core line-up of Jez Kerr, Martin Moscrop and Donald Johnson.

Hailed universally as pioneers of what became known as “punk funk” thanks to the success of ‘Shack Up’ on both sides of the Atlantic, their sound is not easily pigeon holed and their influence can never be understated. The band introduced the avant-garde elements of funk, jazz, electronics, tape loops and technology to the pop song, wrapping it in a post punk aesthetic, adding great clothes and the coolest haircuts. They have gone on to influence generations of musicians - from LCD Soundsystem, Happy Mondays, Franz Ferdinand, ESG, Factory Floor and Andrew Weatherall.

Following the new wave classic Sextet, this Manchester/New York post-punk funk unit's third album, I'd Like to See You Again, points toward a more minimal, stripped-down funk sound. This was apparently influenced heavily by the New York club scene of the early '80s, in which A Certain Ratio immersed themselves following their formation in Manchester. The departure of vocalist Martha Tilson left the band working in a more rhythmic instrumental approach, eschewing the pop forms of Sextet and focusing on a harder electro-funk sound. While this revealed the influence of time spent in club culture and marked a radical departure from the melancholy Manchester sound of their previous albums, the band kept their melodic passages intact, which created a tension between bright and dark moods that was the striking characteristic of their best work. The fact that this album fared well on the dancefloor some 20 years after its release may indicate that A Certain Ratio was ahead of their time. Their influence could be heard cropping up in strains of the Brit-pop, techno, post-rock, and house of the late '90s. Hence, I'd Like to See You Again is an album that deserves a revisit. Essential listening for fans of the Factory sound that spawned the British club sound exemplified by New Order and the New York wave of minimal funk groups, like Liquid Liquid and ESG..

A full length album featuring collaborations with a whole host of musicians and artists - Douglas J McCarthy from Nitzer Ebb, Michael Gira from Swans, Shannon Funchess from Light Asylum, Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe aka Lichens, Austrian thereminist Dorit Chrysler and Lun*na Menoh. This Remix EP sees a selection of these tracks reworked by Barry Adamson, Shannon F, Silent Servant and label mates LIARS. Its Juan Mendez who kicks things off, sharing credits with his Silent Servant alter-ego. His version of "We Chase The Sound" is a suitably acidic and corrosive roller, keeping the industrial, Nitzer Ebb-era chants and littering an electro-focused drum palette with squelchy reverbs and metallic swirls. Shannon F's gated drums grace an alternative remix as glitchy, staccato synth elements are added to this Detroitian, electro-punk stomper. On the flip local legend Barry Adamson offers his morose and shadowy vocal talents to "We Are A Mirror", stretching it out into a paranoid, claustrophobic piece of vacuumy electronic soul. Very interesting, very out there! Finally, Mute bed fellows LIARS turn "Breathe On" into a post-coital swirl of ambience and released tension; the strung-out, narcotized mood collapsing into a state of blissed-out carnal abandon. Clever, intriguing set of remixes, lots of variation and highly listenable. Mega!

Force marked a return to form for Ratio, mixing the robust funk grooves of lead single Mickey Way with more downtempo tracks, as well as Si Firmi O Grido, the percussive tour de force that still provides a reliable climax to live performances. In addition to pin-sharp rhythm and groove the album also displayed a certain pop sensibility, courtesy of guest vocalist Corinne Drewery of Swing Out Sister. The album was also one of the first to utilise the brand new Akai S900 sampler.

The sound is good for lo-fi recordings, and the band is, for all of their musical amateurishness, precise and controlled. Those seeking an idiosyncratic, interesting art-funk band can do no wrong with this release.

Though various members have come and gone, a core line-up of Jeremy Kerr, Martin Moscrop and Donald Johnson has always remained.

These repercussions were most recently highlighted by some of today's electronic peers paying homage to TG's pioneering experiments. "Mutant TG" was the first ever TG remix collection whereby contemporary producers such as Carl Craig, Two Lone Swordsmen and Simon Ratcliffe (Basement Jaxx) provide stunning reworks of classic TG. Now with "The Taste Of TG" you can sample their unadulterated majesty, a beginner's guide to the enigmatic and elusive Throbbing Gristle.

The music exists not in space, but in a space; it is a document of an event, of a room, and of the composer within it. It is music that is not fully controlled and appears to be anxiously, often violently competing against its creator.

Pitchfork describe the track title track as “moving from heroic vistas into a garbled, snow-blinded melee. Distant choral pads, a glistening upper-register sheen, submerged piano, and groaning harmonies all stack up into a geologic crescendo that extends into infinity.” while The 405 describe the EP as “scorching and beautiful”.

I tweeted him to ask what he was doing there (a stupid question as he was doing the exact thing I was, watching bad open-air Karaoke). His response was that he was 'Collecting Owls' which he must have been as good at as he was at making life altering earth-shaking electronic clouds of bliss, because there wasn't an owl to be seen.

Through his collaboration with Fernandez, Ranaldo moves into some rich new sonic territories and production techniques, experimenting with electronic beats and samples alongside live players

Ranaldo is a co-founder of Sonic Youth, a visual artist, producer and writer. In addition to Fernandez, he worked with several special guests on Electric Trim, including Sharon Van Etten who sings on six of the tracks and duets on ‘Last Looks’ and Kid Millions (aka Man Forever) as well as longtime friend and collaborator Nels Cline (Wilco). In addition, the album features Ranaldo’s band The Dust (fellow Sonic Youth member Steve Shelley, guitarist Alan Licht, and bassist Tim Luntzel).

Ranaldo collaborated with award winning New York author Jonathan Lethem (Motherless Brooklyn / The Fortress of Solitude) for lyrics on six of the songs and the American artist, Richard Prince, who previously painted the sleeve for Sonic Youth’s 2004 album Sonic Nurse, created the artwork for the album.

On this, Liars’ eighth studio album, the bustling backdrops of Los Angeles, Berlin and New York have been replaced with a presence far more intimate and autobiographical as Liars once again boldly step out of their comfort zone into vastly new musical territory.

The album’s reinvention of the Liars paradigm - blurring the lines between electronic and acoustic, between the experimental impulse and the addictive pop sensibility - is evidence that Angus’ creative energies remain as healthy as ever, even given the upheaval within the group.

Butchy Fuego, who performed live with Liars following Julian Gross’ departure in 2014, plays drums on three tracks.

The music for the album was originally created for a theatrical production of Thus Spoke Zarathustra (Also Sprach Zarathustra) based on Friedrich Nietzsche’s philosophical novel of the same name, which premiered in March 2016. Also Sprach Zarathustra is an update of the music Laibach created for the play, directed by Matjaž Berger for the Anton Podbevšek Theatre (APT) in Novo Mesto, Slovenia.

35 years on from their genesis in the then-Yugoslavian industrial town Trbovlje, Laibach are still the most internationally acclaimed band to have come out of the former Communist countries of Eastern and Central Europe. Founded in the death year of the country’s founding father Tito, and rising to fame as Yugoslavia steered towards self-destruction, Laibach can make you think, dance and march to the same music.

Superbly intimidating but brilliantly conceived and executed.

                                                                                                                                  Looper

The vinyl is a limited edition of 500 and includes a download with 3 previously unreleased tracks, Our Own Way Home, (the original song that became the intro and outro on the album, and the melodic theme that occurs throughout), Lucky Tui and The Back Roads.

Looper emerged from Belle & Sebastian in 1997, when Stuart David (co-founder and bass player of B&S) and his wife Karn (an artist who directed the early B&S videos) collaborated for a show at Glasgow School of Art. A degree show fundraiser for Stuart’s sister Karla Black – who received a Turner Prize nomination in 2011- the performance was a multi-media affair incorporating TVs, super 8 film, 35mm slides and kinetic sculptures. Since nothing broke down and everyone clapped, they decided to keep doing it.

The band went on release four albums via Sub Pop, Jeepster & Mute, with many of their tracks appearing in film, including Mondo 77 which appeared in Cameron Crowe's Vanilla Sky (watch the recent video for that track here: https://youtu.be/Xh93L8qDcxI)

After a break from music for a few years, Karn went back to art school to study animation and Stuart turned his focus to studying literature and writing novels, a move to the remote countryside, post-study, prompted the creation of a new body of work.

Offgrid:Offline, the band’s fifth studio album, was the result - these new songs and stories, inspired by the return to peace and quiet and influenced by indie-folk music saw Looper conscious of the very different styles of previous albums. They set out to bring together elements of each into this new work. Structured like the first album, around a recurring melody, Offgrid:Offline is thematically centred on the spoken word piece which gives the album its title, drawing together the musical motifs and lyrical themes from throughout.

Goldfrapp follow up 2013’s Top 5 album ‘Tales of Us’ with the deep, dark and electronic musical palette of ‘Silver Eye’, their brand new studio album, made, for the first time, with an eclectic collection of collaborators. John Congleton, Grammy-winning producer of St. Vincent, John Grant and Wild Beasts, electronic composer Bobby Krlic, aka The Haxan Cloak and mix engineer David Wrench (The XX, Caribou, fka Twigs) have helped create an album of stomping underground electronica, sensual ethereal melodies and metal machine pop, that is undeniably Goldfrapp.  A passionate and increasingly in-demand photographer, Alison art directed and shot all the images for the album cover and the publicity campaign.

Australian-born, Reykjavík-dwelling musician Ben Frost, whose glacial compositions have adorned Sky Atlantic’s oddball Arctic murder mystery Fortitude. Despite previously scoring various visual projects (including survival drama The Deep), Frost approached Fortitude with reservations. “I was actually very wary of getting involved, to be honest,” he says. “In my experience, when people use words like ‘new’, ‘uncompromising’ and ‘cutting edge’, what they actually mean is can you borrow some elements from something genuinely exciting and mash it into a fine paste suitable for infants and old people.”

Dovetailing with the on-screen intrigue, Frost’s work is by turns urgent, unsettling and alarming. “I was probably subconsciously trying to get out of it when I said it should be built around choral music, but nobody asked me to leave the meeting,” he says.

For Frost, who has decried industry “bullshit” vehemently in the past, working on scores has proved liberating. “There are lines of inquiry that I can explore, that can form the foundations of a bigger idea, one that needs more time. In those long spaces between [albums], I have often found that writing soundtrack music as a counterpart to something else is, if nothing else, good exercise.”

‘Intoxicated Women’ contains many duets and songs written by Gainsbourg, mostly during the 1960s, in a period where he was focusing his songwriting on singers such as France Galle, Juliette Greco and most famously, Brigitte Bardot.

Here Harvey has enlisted the talents of guest singers Channthy Kak (Cambodian Space Project), Australian singers Xanthe Waite (Terry, Primo), Sophia Brous, Lyndelle-Jayne Spruyt and Jess Ribeiro and the German chanteuse Andrea Schroeder plus a special appearance by Harvey’s son, Solomon.

LOS ANGELES – In 1996, The Afghan Whigs were fresh off the worldwide success of Gentlemen. They had toured the world, graced magazine covers, television performances, major festivals, the works. However, their follow up album would not be Gentlemen II. It would be a pivot and a full public display of the growth and maturity of Greg Dulli’s songwriting.

Released in the spring of 1996, Black Love was the Afghan Whigs’ fifth studio album overall. The music was inspired by lead singer Greg Dulli’s idea to make a film noir movie. Although the film was never made, it did help inform the album’s dark tone and fuel songs like the singles “Honky’s Ladder” and “Going To Town.” The album opener, “Crime Scene Part One” was inspired by the screenplay for “The Million Dollar Hotel,” while “Blame, Etc.” reflected on the troubled life of Temptations singer David Ruffin.

This 20th Anniversary edition includes nine previously unreleased recordings. Among the standouts are acoustic versions of “Going To Town” called: “Go To Town” and “Crime Scene Part Two.” Also included is a demo for “Faded,” which closed the original album, as well as a solo piano cover of the New Order classic “Regret.” The unreleased material also highlights the band’s creative process with “Mick Taylor Jam” and “Wynton Kelly Jam.”

Eusa, the brand new album from Yann Tiersen comprises 10 new solo piano pieces, each relating to a specific location on the island of Ushant off the coast of Brittany (‘Eusa’ in Breton), where Tiersen lives.

The album, recorded in Studio 1 at Abbey Road features Yann on piano accompanied by field recordings from the exact spot referred to in the piece of music. Between each piece we hear the sounds of the island, and Tiersen’s improvisations that are all titled ‘Hent’. Hent translates from Breton to English as Path – Tiersen is leading the listener across the landscape to the new location.

Eusa is the album fans have been waiting for and sees Yann return to the piano and the music the world fell in love with on the soundtrack to Jean-Pierre Jeunot’s 2001 movie Amélie.

It has taken 20 years for Mick Harvey to resume his project of translating Serge Gainsbourg’s songs into English and this is the long-awaited continuation (Volume 3) of the series - ‘Delirium Tremens’.

The intervening years have, of course, been full of activity and dozens of releases, including four solo albums and several albums as a member of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and in collaboration with PJ Harvey.

‘Delirium Tremens’ brings us another wide crosssection of Gainsbourg material. From 1976’s ‘The Man With The Cabbage Head’ (L’homme a tete de chou) all the way back to early songs such as ‘Deadly Tedium’ (Ce Mortel Ennui) and ‘Coffee Colour’ (Couleur Cafe) from the late 1950s and early 1960s, as well as a selection of five songs from the TV special ‘Anna’ which starred Anna Karina with the female parts here executed with enormous charm by Xanthe Waite, who has been joining Harvey on his recent shows.

The album is rounded out by a beautiful rendering of the late period Jane Birkin duet ‘The Decadance’ (La Decadanse) where Harvey is joined on vocals by his wife Katy Beale.

                                                                                                                                                Swans

Further recordings were made in Dallas, Seattle and Berlin.

Equal parts brooding and pensive, but with a rarely embraced melodic sensibility. Further evidence of their unrivalled talents.

Today they announce details of the their debut album ‘Spiritual Songs For Lovers To Sing’ available for pre-order now and out on 6 May 2016 on Mute. The album was produced by The Haxan Cloak (known for his own genre-bending experimental compositions and work on Björk’s Vulnicura album) on the remote island of Osea.

Over the past two years, they have been releasing music, art, photography, film and manifestos into the world, including 2014’s ‘Unites’ video and the expansive ‘Lost Under Heaven’ music and artwork package at the end of last year.

Ellery’s name might be familiar as the frontman of WU LYF, whose raw and primal voice helped create a sound that shaped a new model for the untamed fury of youth. Ebony is an audio-visual artist based in Amsterdam, where the pair now live, and co-directed the new video for ‘I&I’ with Florian Joahn.

Yeasayer offer a peek into the world of Amen & Goodbye with “I Am Chemistry,” the first track to be heard from their highly-anticipated forthcoming album. Featuring guest vocals from the legendary folk singer Suzzy Roche of The Roches, “I Am Chemistry” is a linear psychedelic journey proving Yeasayer still has the knack for writing very odd pop songs.

Amen & Goodbye is the follow up to 2012’s work Fragrant World. Moving away from a digital - heavy approach, Yeasayer recorded Amen & Goodbye to tape at Outlier Inn Studio in upstate New York, then brought on board Joey Waronker (drummer - Atoms For Peace / Beck) to deconstruct everything to make the final document.

Amen & Goodbye features Yeasayer’s trademark sound without sounding like anything the band has done before. They have created a collection of strange fables from the Bible from a universe that does not yet exist.

‘Music Complete’ is New Order’s ninth LP (tenth if you count 2013’s mini album ‘Lost Sirens’) and possibly their most eclectic collection of songs yet. Whichever way you count it, it’s New Order’s return to recording after an absence of more than a decade.

‘Music Complete’ finds the group revitalised, refreshed and razor sharp, looking to their past while forging forward. Where the group has previously pushed toward synthesisers or guitars, here the two are in balance.

Welcome Back To Milk is the Newcastle-born and sometimes Californian based singer’s second album, but her debut as Du Blonde, and it’s a complete reinvention: new name, new sound, new band, new attitude – and attitude is the key word.

It started at the V&A. Two years ago, in the cavernous final room of the ‘David Bowie Is…’ exhibition, Beth had an epiphany. “When I was a kid, my idea of being a musician came from all these big characters – Bowie, Bolan, Beefheart” she says. “I had this moment in front of all these chapters of his life: this is what I want to do and I haven’t done it for all of these years. All this stuff that was really important to me in the beginning, all of the creativity, emotional expulsion, I’d just lost all of that. It was such a sad moment, but also good – because you can’t change it unless you realise.”

It was time for a revolution and to get back to what she’d always promised herself: to keep moving, keep changing, keep pushing art and sound and never be pinned down. Beth Jeans Houghton was dead, and Du Blonde was born.

Where 2012’s debut Yours Truly Cellophane Nose threw everything at a song, Welcome Back To Milk strips everything back and is one massive release of pent up aggression, captured perfectly by producer and Bad Seed Jim Sclavunos. Heavy riffs, loud drums and vocal snarls contrast beautifully with poignant balladry and tenderness that fans of Houghton’s previous work will recognise. Future Islands frontman Samuel T Herring also provides guest vocals on Mind Is On My Mind.

“What am I pissed off about? In no particular order: the free wheeling judgement of faceless accusers online, every man and his dog giving me advice on how to live my life, what to wear, what not to say, how to write songs. Being asked if I’m on my period in business meetings. Being told to ‘just deal with’ misogyny. It’s clear that the message for young girls, in music, business and relationships, is still ‘shut up, do what you’re told and be thankful’.”
