MUTE

Springing forth from the punk era of the late 70s, A Certain Ratio carved their own niche by marrying the gloom and gristle of the Manchester's Factory era with a whole load of groove. Hailed universally as pioneers of what became known as ‘punk funk’ thanks to the success of ‘Shack Up’ on both sides of the Atlantic, their sound is not easily pigeon holed and their influence can never be understated. The band introduced the avant-garde elements of funk, jazz, electronics, tape loops and technology to the pop song, wrapping it in a post punk aesthetic, adding great clothes and the coolest haircuts.

If Good Together saw A Certain Ratio translating the acid house ethos through conventional song, Up In Downsville was a sweat drenched return to the heart of the dance floor. Released on Rob Gretton’s plainly named imprint, the LP shuffles through melodic house, slick acid jazz and brooding electro-funk, pulling together the disparate strands of Manchester’s clubland into one infectious whole. The groove is king throughout but never hits harder than on LP closer Up In Downsville Pt.2, a flute led masterpiece of Mancunian funk which forms a wonderful contrast to enduring Balearic classic ‘Salvador’s (Fish)’, the album’s finest moment.

Daniel Blumberg

Minus

Daniel Blumberg announces his debut album release for Mute, ‘Minus’, the first release under his own name.

An astonishing work, the record weds an improvisational, free-music ethos to the rawest emotional songwriting, rooted deep in the personal turmoil Blumberg experienced whilst making the record.

The album was recorded live with legendary producer Peter Walsh (Scott Walker’s collaborator since ‘Climate Of Hunter’) in just five days during a remote residential stay in Wales, amidst a debilitating breakup with his partner of seven years along with Blumberg's ongoing struggle with mental illness which resulted in his hospitalization just a week before recording.

Still only 27 years old, Blumberg has written himself a rich musical history; from his teenage band who signed to XL whilst he was still at school, onto and through the projects of Yuck, Oupa and Hebronix, whilst solidifying close creative partnerships with the likes of David Berman (Silver Jews), Low, Lambchop and Royal Trux’s Neil Michael Hagerty (with whom Blumberg has performed as a member of the Howling Hex).

With ‘Minus’, though, there is a sense that Daniel Blumberg has finally arrived at the place he has been searching for - an arresting and progressive work, one which is set to establish him as one of Britain’s most unique contemporary voices.

    Josh T. Pearson

    The Straight Hits!

Josh T. Pearson presents ‘The Straight Hits!’, an album which began as a mere creative exercise - each song had to follow certain parameters, described as The Five Pillars - and one that has given Pearson the freedom to write a lighter, more ‘straight’ album.

In three days, Pearson had penned nine whole songs (the album also includes a cover of Austin Americana singer/songwriter Jonathan Terrell’s wonderful country tribute song ‘Damn Straight’). The album is a departure from years of long form songwriting with tunes meant to hit straight and to the point.

‘The Straight Hits!’ features multiple different flavours of country, rock and all points in between, taking in blasts of goofy shit-kicking country-punk (opener ‘Straight To The Top!’,); cataclysmic rock & roll playing its romantic drama at high-stakes (‘Loved Straight To Hell); aching folksy mourn (‘Dire Straights Of Love’) and even a bona fide love song, ‘A Love Song (Set Me Straight)’, which Pearson admits breaks several of the Five Pillars but obeys an unwritten Sixth Pillar: Musical rules are made to be broken. There’s new Josh T. Pearson music in the world and it’s joyful, giddy, lifeaffirming stuff.

      STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Never one to shy away from his Texan roots, former frontman of Lift To Experience branches out into acoustic numbers and pulsing balladry, amongst the (not surprising) walls of catatonic, blissful noise.

      Nonpareils

      Scented Pictures

Aaron Hemphill announces details of his debut solo album, ‘Scented Pictures’. Released under the name Nonpareils, these are his first recordings since an amicable departure from Liars in 2016.

The songs on ‘Scented Pictures’, recorded by Hemphill in Berlin, are directly inspired by concepts relating to memories, or more accurately the sensory experience of memory. The tracks brim with poppy ideas and lush colour, yet their structures aim at defying logic, filtering the songs into strange new psychedelic corners. Hemphill believes that encouraging the brain to fill in the gaps in something - be it a piece of music or a specific memory - leads to an amplified, more vivid experience for the listener. The snippets of sound and image inside ‘Scented Pictures’’ songs were mostly culled from the musician’s own memory and tinted by his entry into a new solo phase in his career.

The songwriting displayed on ‘Scented Pictures’ is metaphysically restructured pop, the wealth of sounds and sonic processes at Hemphill’s disposal having diversified and warped since ‘Mess’, his final studio album with Liars.

        Chris Carter

        Chemistry Lessons Volume 1

Seventeen years on from his last solo release, the twenty-five tracks collected on Chris Carter’s Chemistry Lessons Volume One (CCCL Volume 1) were the product of six years spent working on solo material in the Norfolk home studio he shares with Cosey Fanni Tutti. CCCL Volume 1 reinforces Carter’s significant but often under-appreciated role in the development of electronic music - a journey that for Carter started ahead of his work with Throbbing Gristle (alongside Cosey, Peter ‘Sleazy’ Christopherson and Genesis Breyer P-Orridge), and continued through Chris & Cosey, Carter Tutti, Carter Tutti Void as well as his own solo and collaborative releases under his own name.

Here you will find music with a distinctly futuristic leaning, with insistent melodic patterns and a distinct sense of wonderment at the limitless possibilities of science. “If there’s an influence on the album, it’s definitely ‘60s radiophonic,” Carter agrees. “Over the last few years I’ve also been listening to old English folk music, almost like a guilty pleasure, and so some of tracks on the album hark back to an almost ingrained DNA we have for those kinds of melodies. They’re not dissimilar to nursery rhymes in some ways.”

That combination of traditional music and the backing track for exciting, potential futures gives tracks like ‘Moon Two’ and ‘Tangerines’ a sheen of inquisitiveness and quiet euphoria, while ‘Modularity’ and ‘Roane’ have an anxious, sci-fi noir charm. Elsewhere, the skewed voices of the meditative ‘Cernubicua’ add a calming, human note to the album, even if deciphering any specific lyrical content is largely impossible. “That's completely intentional,” says Carter. “Sleazy and I had worked together on ways of developing a sort of artificial singing using software and hardware. This was me trying to take it a step further. I've taken lyrics, my own voice or people's voices from a collection that I'd put together with Sleazy, and I’ve chopped them up and done all sorts of weird things with them.”

Carter began the foundation work for what became CCCL Volume 1 in the years before Sleazy passed away in 2010, and the death of Carter’s fellow TG journeyman had a profound effect on the development of the album. “I’d been accumulating a lot of material, just tracks and elements of tracks, and I was going to start putting it together just before Sleazy died,” he says. “That’s what completely threw me, and that’s partly why it’s taken so long, because of dealing with the shock of that.” Carter describes going through a long grieving process which manifested itself in some of the darker, more introspective tracks appearing on the album.

          STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: There aren't many driving forces in electronic music as influential as throbbing gristle, and Chris Carter's role cannot be understated. Here we get a distillation of his influences from minimal wave industrial into cosmic and krautrock. Brilliantly evocative and enthralling.

          ACR:MCR

As part of the ongoing collaboration with Mute Recordings Several of their albums will be released, including the long out of print albums 'acr:mcr' and 'Good Together.'A Certain Ratio embraced the ethic and culture of the late seventies post-punk explosion, but sounded like nothing else around them and refused to fit in. Formed in 1978, the band had various members throughout their career, and a core line-up of Jez Kerr, Martin Moscrop and Donald Johnson.

Hailed universally as pioneers of what became known as “punk funk” thanks to the success of ‘Shack Up’ on both sides of the Atlantic, their sound is not easily pigeon holed and their influence can never be understated. I'd Like To See You Again

Following the new wave classic Sextet, this Manchester/New York post-punk funk unit's third album, I'd Like to See You Again, points toward a more minimal, stripped-down funk sound. This was apparently influenced heavily by the New York club scene of the early '80s, in which A Certain Ratio immersed themselves following their formation in Manchester. The departure of vocalist Martha Tilson left the band working in a more rhythmic instrumental approach, eschewing the pop forms of Sextet and focusing on a harder electro-funk sound. While this revealed the influence of time spent in club culture and marked a radical departure from the melancholy Manchester sound of their previous albums, the band kept their melodic passages intact, which created a tension between bright and dark moods that was the striking characteristic of their best work. The fact that this album fared well on the dancefloor some 20 years after its release may indicate that A Certain Ratio was ahead of their time. Their influence could be heard cropping up in strains of the Brit-pop, techno, post-rock, and house of the late '90s. Hence, I'd Like to See You Again is an album that deserves a revisit. Essential listening for fans of the Factory sound that spawned the British club sound exemplified by New Order and the New York wave of minimal funk groups, like Liquid Liquid and ESG..

              Detroit House Guests: The Remixes

"Detroit House Guests", a project conceived by ADULT., was released earlier this year. A full length album featuring collaborations with a whole host of musicians and artists - Douglas J McCarthy from Nitzer Ebb, Michael Gira from Swans, Shannon Funchess from Light Asylum, Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe aka Lichens, Austrian thereminist Dorit Chrysler and Lun*na Menoh. This Remix EP sees a selection of these tracks reworked by Barry Adamson, Shannon F, Silent Servant and label mates LIARS. Its Juan Mendez who kicks things off, sharing credits with his Silent Servant alter-ego. His version of "We Chase The Sound" is a suitably acidic and corrosive roller, keeping the industrial, Nitzer Ebb-era chants and littering an electro-focused drum palette with squelchy reverbs and metallic swirls. Shannon F's gated drums grace an alternative remix as glitchy, staccato synth elements are added to this Detroitian, electro-punk stomper. On the flip local legend Barry Adamson offers his morose and shadowy vocal talents to "We Are A Mirror", stretching it out into a paranoid, claustrophobic piece of vacuumy electronic soul. Very interesting, very out there! Finally, Mute bed fellows LIARS turn "Breathe On" into a post-coital swirl of ambience and released tension; the strung-out, narcotized mood collapsing into a state of blissed-out carnal abandon. Clever, intriguing set of remixes, lots of variation and highly listenable. Mega!

                Force

Re-release of the fifth album by iconic post-punk funk outfit A Certain Ratio, originally released by Factory Records in November 1986 and described by drummer Donald Johnson as "the Mike Tyson of funk".

Force marked a return to form for Ratio, mixing the robust funk grooves of lead single Mickey Way with more downtempo tracks, as well as Si Firmi O Grido, the percussive tour de force that still provides a reliable climax to live performances. In addition to pin-sharp rhythm and groove the album also displayed a certain pop sensibility, courtesy of guest vocalist Corinne Drewery of Swing Out Sister. The album was also one of the first to utilise the brand new Akai S900 sampler.

This first album was originally only released on cassette and was compiled from a collection of early four-track recordings and a set of live tracks recorded when the band was opening for the Talking Heads. The sound is good for lo-fi recordings, and the band is, for all of their musical amateurishness, precise and controlled. Those seeking an idiosyncratic, interesting art-funk band can do no wrong with this release.

“A Certain Ratio embraced the ethic and culture of the late seventies post-punk explosion, but sounded like nothing else around them and refused to fit in,” reads the press notes. “ACR always do what I don’t expect, who wouldn’t want to work with artists like that?” Mute Records boss Daniel Miller adds. Though various members have come and gone, a core line-up of Jeremy Kerr, Martin Moscrop and Donald Johnson has always remained.

                  Throbbing Gristle

The Second Annual Report - 40th Anniversary Edition

Throbbing Gristle's first album - the "Second" refers to it coming out at the end of their second year together - must have sounded like it came from another planet upon its 1977 release. Heavily influential to industrial outfits of the 1980s, who took TG's raw, experimental noise ideas and made them more accessible, "Second Annual Report" is TG at their most extreme.

From its deadpan sleeve to the peculiar choice of structuring - the album features three separate live versions of the horrific "Slug Bait" (including a wonderful clip of a DJ screaming at the audience after a Throbbing Gristle gig) and four more straightforward cuts of "Maggot Death" - "Second Annual Report" is a startling document. This reissue also includes the lengthy improvisation "After Cease to Exist" and both sides of the subversive "United / Zyklon B. Zombie" single.

20 Jazz Funk Greats - 40th Anniversary Edition

One of THE classic post-punk albums of the late 70s, "20 Jazz Funk Greats" sees Throbbing Gristle breaking away from their strictly industrial / experimental noise sound of previous years and dipping a toe in more accessible waters. Obviously that's 'accessibility' TG style, with the title track opener mixing a minimal drum rhythm, melancholic trumpet wails and synth noise - not necessarily one for the youth club disco... Originally released in 1979 - the same year as PIL's "Metal Box", and with a similar boundary-pushing desire, "20 Jazz Funk Greats" is one of the most influential albums for the forthcoming 1980s EBM movement. Standout tracks include the drum-panned sequence-heavy "Still Walking", morose "Convincing People" (TG's answer to "Poptones"?), the krautrock-inspired beauty "Walkabout" and massive disco-not-disco / electro-dance anthem "Hot On The Heels Of Love". Essential.

                      STAFF COMMENTS

Patrick says: Although it clocks in at eleven tracks, none of which are even vaguely jazz-funk, this LP really is great. Better than great actually - it’s a sleazy, queasy, properly perverted masterpiece. In a move which laid the blueprint for the industrial and EBM movements which followed, Hull’s finest married post punk grit with corrosive synthesis to create a truly unsettling listen.

                      Ben Frost

                      The Centre Cannot Hold

The Centre Cannot Hold was recorded over ten days by Steve Albini in Chicago. The music exists not in space, but in a space; it is a document of an event, of a room, and of the composer within it. It is music that is not fully controlled and appears to be anxiously, often violently competing against its creator.

An exercise in limitation and chromatic saturation, The Centre Cannot Hold is an attempt at transcribing a spectrum of glowing ultramarine into sound.

Ben Frost released Threshold Of Faith, a seven-track 12” and digital EP, last month. Pitchfork describe the track title track as “moving from heroic vistas into a garbled, snow-blinded melee. Distant choral pads, a glistening upper-register sheen, submerged piano, and groaning harmonies all stack up into a geologic crescendo that extends into infinity.” while The 405 describe the EP as “scorching and beautiful”.

Barry says: I once saw Ben Frost at Mauerpark in Berlin. I tweeted him to ask what he was doing there (a stupid question as he was doing the exact thing I was, watching bad open-air Karaoke). His response was that he was 'Collecting Owls' which he must have been as good at as he was at making life altering earth-shaking electronic clouds of bliss, because there wasn't an owl to be seen.

Electric Trim was recorded in New York City and Barcelona in collaboration with producer Raül ‘Refree’ Fernandez and extends the work of Ranaldo's solo canon, the most recent being his 2013 album, Last Night On Earth.

Through his collaboration with Fernandez, Ranaldo moves into some rich new sonic territories and production techniques, experimenting with electronic beats and samples alongside live players

Ranaldo is a co-founder of Sonic Youth, a visual artist, producer and writer. In addition to Fernandez, he worked with several special guests on Electric Trim, including Sharon Van Etten who sings on six of the tracks and duets on ‘Last Looks’ and Kid Millions (aka Man Forever) as well as longtime friend and collaborator Nels Cline (Wilco). In addition, the album features Ranaldo’s band The Dust (fellow Sonic Youth member Steve Shelley, guitarist Alan Licht, and bassist Tim Luntzel).

Ranaldo collaborated with award winning New York author Jonathan Lethem (Motherless Brooklyn / The Fortress of Solitude) for lyrics on six of the songs and the American artist, Richard Prince, who previously painted the sleeve for Sonic Youth’s 2004 album Sonic Nurse, created the artwork for the album.

                        TFCF: 420 Estuary Angler Edition

Liars have, as a matter of course, sounded radically different with each album, pursuing new concepts and occupying diverse mindsets. On this, Liars’ eighth studio album, the bustling backdrops of Los Angeles, Berlin and New York have been replaced with a presence far more intimate and autobiographical as Liars once again boldly step out of their comfort zone into vastly new musical territory.

The album’s reinvention of the Liars paradigm - blurring the lines between electronic and acoustic, between the experimental impulse and the addictive pop sensibility - is evidence that Angus’ creative energies remain as healthy as ever, even given the upheaval within the group.

‘TFCF’ was written and recorded by Liars (Angus Andrew). Butchy Fuego, who performed live with Liars following Julian Gross’ departure in 2014, plays drums on three tracks.

Following an amicable parting of ways with Aaron Hemphill, Liars is now Angus Andrew, who decamped to his native Australia, specifically to a remote part of the Australian bush, to create an album unlike any Liars had attempted before.

“Silence is worse; all truths that are kept silent become poisonous.”
                            Friedrich Nietzsche, Thus Spoke Zarathustra

Laibach announce the release of a brand new album, Also Sprach Zarathustra.

The music for the album was originally created for a theatrical production of Thus Spoke Zarathustra (Also Sprach Zarathustra) based on Friedrich Nietzsche’s philosophical novel of the same name, which premiered in March 2016. Also Sprach Zarathustra is an update of the music Laibach created for the play, directed by Matjaž Berger for the Anton Podbevšek Theatre (APT) in Novo Mesto, Slovenia.

35 years on from their genesis in the then-Yugoslavian industrial town Trbovlje, Laibach are still the most internationally acclaimed band to have come out of the former Communist countries of Eastern and Central Europe. Founded in the death year of the country’s founding father Tito, and rising to fame as Yugoslavia steered towards self-destruction, Laibach can make you think, dance and march to the same music.

                            STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Unearthly drones, crisp glassine clicks and haunting ambience, gothic electronics and foreboding vocal abstractions make this yet another next-level dark ambient / classical / drone outing from one of the frontrunners of the scene. Superbly intimidating but brilliantly conceived and executed.

                            Can

                            The Singles

Can – The Singles, a brand new collection of all of the band’s single releases, on triple vinyl and CD.

This unique document is the first time the singles have been presented together and shows the breadth of their influential career, from well loved tracks like Halleluwah, Vitamin C and I Want More to more obscure and sought after singles such as Silent Night and Turtles Have Short Legs.

The tracks are all presented in their original single version, many of which have been unavailable for many years and not presented outside of the original 7" release.

The triple vinyl comes packaged in a trifold sleeve and decorated with a beautiful spot gloss lamination and is designed by the award winning Julian House from Intro, a long time design collaborator of Can's.

The CD and download versions of the album serve as the perfect easy entry point to the world of Can for the uninitiated and are priced accordingly.
The vinyl serves as a wonderful document to this corner of the Can world for the hardcore fan and is an often overlooked area of the band's career.

                            STAFF COMMENTS

Patrick says: Once described by my colleague Mandy (names have been changed for confidentiality) as a bunch of German druggies each playing a different song, Can have a reputation for the eccentric (or eclectic, or insane). It may surprise some then that the Kosmische legends were more than capable of knocking up killer pop tunes, 23 of which feature here. Alongside big tracks like the b-boy classic ‘Vitamin C’ and wavy Krautfunk great ‘I Want More’, we also get to sample some lesser known sounds like the bluesy blinder ‘She Brings The Rain’ and the infectious idiocy of ‘Turtles Have Short Legs’.

                            Looper

                            Offgrid:Offline

Offgrid:Offline was released as a download only within the band’s 5CD box set, These Things. The vinyl is a limited edition of 500 and includes a download with 3 previously unreleased tracks, Our Own Way Home, (the original song that became the intro and outro on the album, and the melodic theme that occurs throughout), Lucky Tui and The Back Roads.

Looper emerged from Belle & Sebastian in 1997, when Stuart David (co-founder and bass player of B&S) and his wife Karn (an artist who directed the early B&S videos) collaborated for a show at Glasgow School of Art. A degree show fundraiser for Stuart’s sister Karla Black – who received a Turner Prize nomination in 2011- the performance was a multi-media affair incorporating TVs, super 8 film, 35mm slides and kinetic sculptures. Since nothing broke down and everyone clapped, they decided to keep doing it.

The band went on release four albums via Sub Pop, Jeepster & Mute, with many of their tracks appearing in film, including Mondo 77 which appeared in Cameron Crowe's Vanilla Sky (watch the recent video for that track here: https://youtu.be/Xh93L8qDcxI)

After a break from music for a few years, Karn went back to art school to study animation and Stuart turned his focus to studying literature and writing novels, a move to the remote countryside, post-study, prompted the creation of a new body of work.

Offgrid:Offline, the band’s fifth studio album, was the result - these new songs and stories, inspired by the return to peace and quiet and influenced by indie-folk music saw Looper conscious of the very different styles of previous albums. They set out to bring together elements of each into this new work. Structured like the first album, around a recurring melody, Offgrid:Offline is thematically centred on the spoken word piece which gives the album its title, drawing together the musical motifs and lyrical themes from throughout.

                              Swans

                              The Great Annihilator

Swans present a remastered reissue of their ninth studio album, ‘The Great Annihilator’, on Mute.

‘The Great Annihilator’, originally released in 1995 and described at the time as “…a majestic symphony of haunting melodies and shifting moods” (SF Bay Guardian), will be released as a 2CD set, on double vinyl - the album’s first release on vinyl for decades - and as a digital download album. (Michael Gira’s ‘Drainland’ is also available as a standalone digital download album.)

The 2CD and double vinyl (in the form of a download code) formats will also feature ‘Drainland’, Michael Gira’s debut solo album recorded at the same time as ‘The Great Annihilator’.

The album was entirely remastered by Doug Henderson but only after Bill Rieflin (‘Honorary Swan Forever’) recently tracked down DATs and cassettes containing unmastered mixes from the sessions. Michael Gira describes the discovery as “a revelation of great sonic effect.” Talking about the recording, Gira said “I lived in a tent in a mosquito infested studio right next to Cabrini Green in Chicago for what (?) something like 3 months, rarely leaving. Band members and Jarboe and Bill Rieflin etc came and went, and somehow we crafted this thing into what it became.”

‘The Great Annihilator’ line up features Michael Gira, Jarboe, Bill Rieflin, Algis Kizys, Norman Westberg, Clinton Steele and Ted Parsons

Goldfrapp follow up 2013’s Top 5 album ‘Tales of Us’ with the deep, dark and electronic musical palette of ‘Silver Eye’, their brand new studio album, made, for the first time, with an eclectic collection of collaborators. John Congleton, Grammy-winning producer of St. Vincent, John Grant and Wild Beasts, electronic composer Bobby Krlic, aka The Haxan Cloak and mix engineer David Wrench (The XX, Caribou, fka Twigs) have helped create an album of stomping underground electronica, sensual ethereal melodies and metal machine pop, that is undeniably Goldfrapp.  A passionate and increasingly in-demand photographer, Alison art directed and shot all the images for the album cover and the publicity campaign.

Barry says: As effervescent and brilliantly melodic as ever. Gritty synths, swirling pads and Alison's unmistakable vocal stylings. Soaring neon 80's numbers, pensive gothic ambience and shining angelic harmonies. Superb.

ADULT. (Detroit’s Nicola Kuperus and Adam Lee Miller) release the new album, ‘Detroit House Guests’, their first for Mute.

‘Detroit House Guests’ is a collaborative project conceived by ADULT. in the early 2000s. The concept became a reality in 2014 after receiving a John S and James L Knight Foundation grant.

Based on the visual artist residency model, each musician came to ADULT.’s studio for a three week period with the parameter that they all live, work and collaborate together. The result, a total anthropological sound experiment and a full length album.

The album features collaborations with a whole host of musicians and artists - Douglas J McCarthy from Nitzer Ebb, Michael Gira from Swans, Shannon Funchess from Light Asylum, Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe AKA Lichens, Austrian thereminist Dorit Chrysler and multidisciplinary artist Lun*na Menoh.

ADULT. are the Detroit duo Nicola Kuperus and Adam Lee Miller. They played their first live show together in Germany in 1997 under the name Artificial Material. In early 1998 they released their first 12” under the moniker Plasma Co. Later that year, they released their first 12” under the name ADULT. Currently, they have released six albums and 19 EPs / singles on Ghostly International, Thrill Jockey and Clone Records, as well as on their own label Ersatz Audio (which currently has over 40 releases since it was founded in 1995). They have remixed over 20 acts as well, including Tuxedomoon, John Foxx, Death In Vegas and Pet Shop Boys (for Moog Music).

Barry says: Detroit residents, and lovers of a good collaboration Adult bring together some of the greatest names in avant, experimental and electronic music to form this exciting and varied tour-de-force. Pulsing electronics, spoken word interludes and industrial rhythms form into a brilliantly fascinating epiphany of sound. Highly recommended.

Despite previously scoring various visual projects (including survival drama The Deep), Frost approached Fortitude with reservations. “I was actually very wary of getting involved, to be honest,” he says. “In my experience, when people use words like ‘new’, ‘uncompromising’ and ‘cutting edge’, what they actually mean is can you borrow some elements from something genuinely exciting and mash it into a fine paste suitable for infants and old people.”

Dovetailing with the on-screen intrigue, Frost’s work is by turns urgent, unsettling and alarming. “I was probably subconsciously trying to get out of it when I said it should be built around choral music, but nobody asked me to leave the meeting,” he says.

For Frost, who has decried industry “bullshit” vehemently in the past, working on scores has proved liberating. “There are lines of inquiry that I can explore, that can form the foundations of a bigger idea, one that needs more time. In those long spaces between [albums], I have often found that writing soundtrack music as a counterpart to something else is, if nothing else, good exercise.”

                                  Intoxicated Women

It has taken 20 years for Mick Harvey to resume his project of translating Serge Gainsbourg’s songs into English and following the release of Volume 3 - ‘Delirium Tremens’ in June, Mick Harvey has now announced the final in the series, Volume 4 - ‘Intoxicated Women’.

‘Intoxicated Women’ contains many duets and songs written by Gainsbourg, mostly during the 1960s, in a period where he was focusing his songwriting on singers such as France Galle, Juliette Greco and most famously, Brigitte Bardot.

Here Harvey has enlisted the talents of guest singers Channthy Kak (Cambodian Space Project), Australian singers Xanthe Waite (Terry, Primo), Sophia Brous, Lyndelle-Jayne Spruyt and Jess Ribeiro and the German chanteuse Andrea Schroeder plus a special appearance by Harvey’s son, Solomon.

                                      Afghan Whigs

Black Love - 20th Anniversary Edition

LOS ANGELES – In 1996, The Afghan Whigs were fresh off the worldwide success of Gentlemen. They had toured the world, graced magazine covers, television performances, major festivals, the works. However, their follow up album would not be Gentlemen II. It would be a pivot and a full public display of the growth and maturity of Greg Dulli’s songwriting.

Released in the spring of 1996, Black Love was the Afghan Whigs’ fifth studio album overall. The music was inspired by lead singer Greg Dulli’s idea to make a film noir movie. Although the film was never made, it did help inform the album’s dark tone and fuel songs like the singles “Honky’s Ladder” and “Going To Town.” The album opener, “Crime Scene Part One” was inspired by the screenplay for “The Million Dollar Hotel,” while “Blame, Etc.” reflected on the troubled life of Temptations singer David Ruffin.

This 20th Anniversary edition includes nine previously unreleased recordings. Among the standouts are acoustic versions of “Going To Town” called: “Go To Town” and “Crime Scene Part Two.” Also included is a demo for “Faded,” which closed the original album, as well as a solo piano cover of the New Order classic “Regret.” The unreleased material also highlights the band’s creative process with “Mick Taylor Jam” and “Wynton Kelly Jam.”

                                        Yann Tiersen

                                        Eusa

Ten tracks. Ten locations. Ten field recordings. One piano.

Eusa, the brand new album from Yann Tiersen comprises 10 new solo piano pieces, each relating to a specific location on the island of Ushant off the coast of Brittany (‘Eusa’ in Breton), where Tiersen lives.

The album, recorded in Studio 1 at Abbey Road features Yann on piano accompanied by field recordings from the exact spot referred to in the piece of music. Between each piece we hear the sounds of the island, and Tiersen’s improvisations that are all titled ‘Hent’. Hent translates from Breton to English as Path – Tiersen is leading the listener across the landscape to the new location.

Eusa is the album fans have been waiting for and sees Yann return to the piano and the music the world fell in love with on the soundtrack to Jean-Pierre Jeunot’s 2001 movie Amélie.

                                          Mick Harvey

                                          Delirium Tremens

It has taken 20 years for Mick Harvey to resume his project of translating Serge Gainsbourg’s songs into English and this is the long-awaited continuation (Volume 3) of the series - ‘Delirium Tremens’.

The intervening years have, of course, been full of activity and dozens of releases, including four solo albums and several albums as a member of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and in collaboration with PJ Harvey.

‘Delirium Tremens’ brings us another wide crosssection of Gainsbourg material. From 1976’s ‘The Man With The Cabbage Head’ (L’homme a tete de chou) all the way back to early songs such as ‘Deadly Tedium’ (Ce Mortel Ennui) and ‘Coffee Colour’ (Couleur Cafe) from the late 1950s and early 1960s, as well as a selection of five songs from the TV special ‘Anna’ which starred Anna Karina with the female parts here executed with enormous charm by Xanthe Waite, who has been joining Harvey on his recent shows.

The album is rounded out by a beautiful rendering of the late period Jane Birkin duet ‘The Decadance’ (La Decadanse) where Harvey is joined on vocals by his wife Katy Beale.

                                            The Glowing Man

After 2014’s epic To Be Kind, SWANS return with a new album, The Glowing Man, announced as the last album release of Swans’ current incarnation.
The Glowing Man was recorded at Sonic Ranch, near El Paso, Texas, with John Congleton as recording engineer. Further recordings were made in Dallas, Seattle and Berlin.

Swans, led by Michael Gira, formed in 1982 and, after disbanding in 1997, returned with the critically acclaimed albums My Father Will Guide Me Up A Rope To The Sky (2010), 2012’s The Seer and 2014’s To Be Kind.

Barry says: Another monolithic collection from gloom-merchants Swans. Equal parts brooding and pensive, but with a rarely embraced melodic sensibility. Further evidence of their unrivalled talents.

Spiritual Songs For Lovers To Sing

LUH began 2016 by releasing ‘I&I’, a song about daybreak, new beginnings and fresh starts and with a sound so bold and unflinching, it served as perfect way to describe the shape of things to come.

Today they announce details of the their debut album ‘Spiritual Songs For Lovers To Sing’ available for pre-order now and out on 6 May 2016 on Mute. The album was produced by The Haxan Cloak (known for his own genre-bending experimental compositions and work on Björk’s Vulnicura album) on the remote island of Osea.

LUH (which stands for Lost Under Heaven) is Ellery Roberts and Ebony Hoorn. Over the past two years, they have been releasing music, art, photography, film and manifestos into the world, including 2014’s ‘Unites’ video and the expansive ‘Lost Under Heaven’ music and artwork package at the end of last year.

Ellery’s name might be familiar as the frontman of WU LYF, whose raw and primal voice helped create a sound that shaped a new model for the untamed fury of youth. Ebony is an audio-visual artist based in Amsterdam, where the pair now live, and co-directed the new video for ‘I&I’ with Florian Joahn.

Amen & Goodbye is the fourth studio album from Brooklyn-based band Yeasayer.

Yeasayer offer a peek into the world of Amen & Goodbye with “I Am Chemistry,” the first track to be heard from their highly-anticipated forthcoming album. Featuring guest vocals from the legendary folk singer Suzzy Roche of The Roches, “I Am Chemistry” is a linear psychedelic journey proving Yeasayer still has the knack for writing very odd pop songs.

Amen & Goodbye is the follow up to 2012’s work Fragrant World. Moving away from a digital - heavy approach, Yeasayer recorded Amen & Goodbye to tape at Outlier Inn Studio in upstate New York, then brought on board Joey Waronker (drummer - Atoms For Peace / Beck) to deconstruct everything to make the final document.

Amen & Goodbye features Yeasayer’s trademark sound without sounding like anything the band has done before. They have created a collection of strange fables from the Bible from a universe that does not yet exist.

                                                    Mutant

Arca’s 2014 album ‘Xen’ was an angular and, at times, insular record driven by aggressively queer juxtapositions. It served as a study of the self that refused categorisation and embraced erraticism; employing confrontational clashes of style and sound to emphasise a morphing dynamic between obscurity and vulnerability. At times anxiously self-reflexive, at others beauteous and calm, it was intermittently personal and withdrawn.

‘Mutant’ is about sensuality and impulsiveness as escape routes out of rigidity: “softness as a weapon when the mind attacks itself.” Anxieties are harmonised by self confidence in the optimism and inclusiveness of transformation. Mutations expose the resonances and malleability of identity. This album takes pride in deformity, innocence, distortion and vulnerability: traits traditionally ostracised as undesirable and regressive.

'Mutant' is released on CD and a special limited edition triple gatefold, double red vinyl edition.

                                                      Music Complete

‘Music Complete’ is New Order’s ninth LP (tenth if you count 2013’s mini album ‘Lost Sirens’) and possibly their most eclectic collection of songs yet. Whichever way you count it, it’s New Order’s return to recording after an absence of more than a decade.

‘Music Complete’ finds the group revitalised, refreshed and razor sharp, looking to their past while forging forward. Where the group has previously pushed toward synthesisers or guitars, here the two are in balance.

Art direction by long term collaborator Peter Saville.

“New Order’s best album since ‘Technique’” - GQ

“Their best record for over 25 years” - Q (****)

“‘Music Complete’ includes a couple of contenders for the canon of all-time New Order greats” - Uncut

“... sounds more like New Order than New Order have sounded in two decades” - Classic Pop

“New Order is back with their best album in years… an album that is more inspired than anything we could have expected” - Under The Radar

“A runaway victory for class over hype” - Mixmag (8/10)

                                                      Welcome Back To Milk

Du Blonde is not a persona or a character, it’s Beth Jeans Houghton ripping it up and starting again. Welcome Back To Milk is the Newcastle-born and sometimes Californian based singer’s second album, but her debut as Du Blonde, and it’s a complete reinvention: new name, new sound, new band, new attitude – and attitude is the key word.

It started at the V&A. Two years ago, in the cavernous final room of the ‘David Bowie Is…’ exhibition, Beth had an epiphany. “When I was a kid, my idea of being a musician came from all these big characters – Bowie, Bolan, Beefheart” she says. “I had this moment in front of all these chapters of his life: this is what I want to do and I haven’t done it for all of these years. All this stuff that was really important to me in the beginning, all of the creativity, emotional expulsion, I’d just lost all of that. It was such a sad moment, but also good – because you can’t change it unless you realise.”

It was time for a revolution and to get back to what she’d always promised herself: to keep moving, keep changing, keep pushing art and sound and never be pinned down. Beth Jeans Houghton was dead, and Du Blonde was born.

Where 2012’s debut Yours Truly Cellophane Nose threw everything at a song, Welcome Back To Milk strips everything back and is one massive release of pent up aggression, captured perfectly by producer and Bad Seed Jim Sclavunos. Heavy riffs, loud drums and vocal snarls contrast beautifully with poignant balladry and tenderness that fans of Houghton’s previous work will recognise. Future Islands frontman Samuel T Herring also provides guest vocals on Mind Is On My Mind.

“What am I pissed off about? In no particular order: the free wheeling judgement of faceless accusers online, every man and his dog giving me advice on how to live my life, what to wear, what not to say, how to write songs. Being asked if I’m on my period in business meetings. Being told to ‘just deal with’ misogyny. It’s clear that the message for young girls, in music, business and relationships, is still ‘shut up, do what you’re told and be thankful’.”

                                                        Filth - Deluxe Edition

Swans’ debut album re-mastered and reissued on 3CD digipack printed on embossed brown chipboard with booklet including rare photos.

The first in a series of Swans re-mastered and definitive catalogue releases.

‘Filth’ was originally released in 1983. It was recently described by Clash magazine as “a brutally exhaustive work swimming in a thematic pool of audacious abjection” and by The Village Voice as “no wave with five years of practice, too messy for mysticism and too funny for suicide.”

‘MG’ is a new instrumental album from Martin Gore, one of the founding members of Depeche Mode. Following on from Martin’s collaboration with Vince Clarke on VCMG’s ‘SSSS’ in 2012, 'MG' sees Martin further develop his love, passion and respect for electronic music.

Written and produced by Martin Gore, work began on ‘MG’ following the final dates of Depeche Mode’s ‘Delta Machine’ tour in March 2013 at Gore’s home studio in Santa Barbara. An entire instrumental album had been in his thoughts for some time, particularly since he has been writing instrumentals for Depeche Mode since 1981.

“I wanted to keep the music very electronic, very filmic and give it an almost sci-fi like quality,” Martin explains. “Music is a necessity for me. I go into the studio at least 5 days a week, every week, so once I had the idea and the template, the process was quick and fun.”

‘MG’ is a soundtrack to an emotional and mysterious film of your own design. From the Angelo Badalmenti - like atmosphere of ‘Elk’ to the industrial electro swagger of ‘Brink’, it landscapes a unique and arresting vision.

                                                          No More Shall We Part

‘No More Shall We Part’ was released in April 2001 and was the eleventh studio record by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds.

The album came after a 4-year gap from recording, following the much acclaimed ‘The Boatman’s Call’ album and was met with mostly positive reviews.

The album showcases the virtuoso talents of The Bad Seeds, with elaborate instrumental sections on nearly every track. Also, Cave’s lyrics are less obscure than usual and he sings in a wider vocal range than he had previously. Features backing vocals from Kate and Anna McGarrigle.

Vinyl transfer approval overseen by Mick Harvey during Summer 2014 and cut at Abbey Road studios.

This edition, approved personally by Nick Cave, is finally available again on its original format.

‘Henry’s Dream’, the seventh album by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, was released in April 1992. It remains a big favourite amongst Bad Seeds fans and is notable for Neil Young producer David Briggs’ ‘live-in-the-studio’ method. Cave and Mick Harvey re-mixed the album and it has a vague concept, with song narratives overlapping and / or sharing characters.

‘When I First Came To Town’ is based partly on Karen Dalton’s recording of the traditional song ‘Katy Cruel’.

Cave later claimed the songs were heavily influenced by street beggars he saw in Brazil. “They’d get their acoustic guitars with one or two strings and bang away and make a racket that had no sense whatsoever. It was very violent and seemed to come straight out of the heart. Very unmusical.”

The album was produced by Flood and recorded during several sessions over the course of four months in West Berlin - where the band were based at the time - and London.

The album opens with ‘The Mercy Seat’, which has been subsequently played at almost all of the band’s live performances since 1988 and was later covered by one of Cave’s biggest influences, Johnny Cash. ‘The Mercy Seat’ was released as a single in May 1988 as a precursor to the album and ‘Deanna’ was released shortly after the album hit the streets.

Cave later admitted that the album “was made at a difficult time in my life when things were spiralling out of control in a lot of areas.”

For this record the Bad Seeds line-up is Cave, new drummer Thomas Wydler, Mick Harvey, Blixa Bargeld and Barry Adamson. Cave would later downplay the importance of the record, but said it helped the band develop musically. Remarking on the song selection, Cave said, "They were all done for different reasons. Basically a list of songs were made and we tried to play them. We tried songs by all sorts of people that never got on the record. Some songs were tributes, like the Tom Jones song; other, we didn't think were ever done particularly well in the first place. Some had haunted my childhood, like "The Carnival Is Over". The strings were arranged by Mick Harvey and played by the Berliner Kaffeehausmusik Ensemble. "The Hammer Song" is an entirely different song than the track with the same title on the 1990 Bad Seeds album The Good Son. Vinyl is heavyweight 180 Gram.

The song is also referenced as an achievement in Lego Harry Potter: Years 5-7.

                                                                    Nocturama

‘Nocturama’ is the twelfth studio album by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, released in 2003.

To date, it is the last Bad Seeds album to feature founding member Blixa Bargeld.

This album reunited Nick Cave with Nick Launay, who had produced The Birthday Party’s groundbreaking ‘Junkyard’ 21 years earlier.

Featuring the singles ‘Bring It On’, ‘He Wants You’ and ‘Rock Of Gibraltar’, this album finds Cave moving away from ‘Murder Ballads’ and the gory fire and brimstone of yore, and exploring more personal themes.

More than twenty years into his career at this point, Nick Cave proved himself worthy of the comparisons made in the press on his behalf: now he could stand alongside the likes of Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash and Tom Waits, as a storyteller who could be unflinchingly honest in his work, whilst continuing to grow his fan base.

Vinyl transfer approval overseen by Mick Harvey during Summer 2014, cut at Abbey Road studios.

Vinyl is heavyweight 180 gram. Please note: this is a three-sided record.

This edition, approved personally by Nick Cave, is finally available again on it’s original format.

                                                                      From Her To Eternity

Following the break up of Nick Cave’s former group The Birthday Party, Cave and drummer/multi-instrumentalist Mick Harvey put together a new band featuring Einsturzende Neubauten guitarist Blixa Bargeld, additional guitarist Hugo Race, and ex-Magazine bass player Barry Adamson.

The band entered the studio on September 20th 1983, and after some sessions, emerged as Nick Cave & The Cavemen, playing their first gig in Melbourne on New Year’s Eve 1983.

The name was short-lived, and was soon amended to Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, in reference to the final Birthday Party release, ‘The Bad Seed’ EP.

Most of ‘From Her To Eternity’ was recorded in London, with sessions split between The Garden studio in Shoreditch, and Trident, in Soho.

Cave later said, "Well, I guess we weren't kicking people in the teeth anymore. I mean, it just became different. I wanted it to be more lyrically orientated and getting Blixa Bargeld in the group made an incredible difference. He's a completely kind of atmospheric guitarist and incredibly economical and it gave me room to breathe”.

The album, produced by Mick Harvey and Flood, was released on 18th June 1984 on Mute Records, Cave’s label for more than the next 25 years.

It received great reviews upon its release and is recognised as one of the most timeless albums of the ‘80s.

Vinyl transfer approval overseen by Mick Harvey Summer 2014, cut at Abbey Road studios.

                                                                        The Firstborn Is Dead

‘The Firstborn Is Dead’, co-produced by Nick Cave, the Bad Seeds and Flood, is the second studio album released by Cave & The Bad Seeds, and was originally released on June 3rd 1985.

Cave explores his fascination with the American South, with references ranging from Elvis Presley to ‘Blind’ Lemon Jefferson.

Recorded in Berlin, Cave later said of this album, "Berlin gave us the freedom and encouragement to do whatever we wanted. We'd lived in London for three years and it seemed that if you stuck your head out of the box, people were pretty quick to knock it back in, particularly if you were Australian. When we came to Berlin it was the opposite. People saw us as some kind of force rather than a kind of wacky novelty act”.

The album's title is a reference to Jesse Garon Presley, the stillborn identical twin of Elvis Presley, and ‘Wanted Man’ was Cave’s own take on a song Bob Dylan wrote for Johnny Cash. Dylan gave his permission for the lyrics to be changed, with Cave’s interpretation referencing his friends.

Also features the apocalyptic classic ‘Tupelo’.

Vinyl transfer approval overseen by Mick Harvey during Summer 2014, cut at Abbey Road studios.

                                                                            The Carny
                                                                            Your Funeral My Trial
                                                                            Stranger Than Kindness
                                                                            Jacks Shadow
                                                                            Hard On For Love
                                                                            She Fell Away
                                                                            Long Time Man

Nika, the 25-year-old behind Zola Jesus’ creative incarnations, is a singer, sole songwriter and producer.

Written on Vashon Island, WA and mixed in Los Angeles, CA by Dean Hurley, ‘Taiga’ follows the widely celebrated albums ‘Versions’ (2013) and ‘Conatus’ (2011). This is Nika’s fourth fulllength album release.

In regards to the album title, Nika explains, “Taiga is the Russian name for the boreal forest. For me it feels very alive… very expansive. It represents a feral, untapped world that could happily exist without us. There are taiga forests in Northern Wisconsin where I was raised, and also in Russia where my ancestors are from, so it also feels very native.”

Liberated in the present and connected to the past, this album is a transition for Zola Jesus. Masterful layers of composition are bathed in familiar atmospheric vocals but a new sensibility is deeply present.

‘Taiga’ is at once challenging and accessible and is undeniably branded with what Nika terms a “piercing ambition.” Such encompassing purpose, she explains, would be impossible without a newfound sense of artistic self. The album is a declaration of that purpose; one faced with jarring clarity in both its content and production. Nika summates, “For me, it feels like my true debut, because it is the first time I have felt so open and liberated.”

                                                                            TRACK LISTING

                                                                            1. Taiga
                                                                            2. Dangerous Days
                                                                            3. Dust
                                                                            4. Hunger
                                                                            5. Go (Blank Sea)
                                                                            6. Ego
                                                                            7. Lawless
                                                                            8. Nail
                                                                            9. Long Way Down
                                                                            10. Hollow
                                                                            11. It's Not Over

Cold Specks, aka Al Spx, has returned, two years and a world map of tours after 2012’s ‘I Predict A Graceful Expulsion’.

Hailed as a masterful and wholly original debut, the follow-up is radically expanded. The 26 year-old Canadian singer, under the sobriquet Al Spx, began work on Neuroplasticity while holed-up in a cottage in Wick, Somerset during the winter of 2012.

The album was recorded at Montreal’s Hotel2Tango and Toronto’s Revolution Recordings studios and produced by Jim Anderson and mixed by Anderson and Ben Hillier (Blur, Depeche Mode).

When Cold Specks wasn’t writing or touring she was pin-balling between asks from an enviable roll call of collaborators and award panels. Shortlisted for the Juno Award and Polaris Prize, Spx also worked on Moby’s album and was invited to play with Joni Mitchell at the singer’s 70th birthday last year, alongside the likes of Herbie Hancock.

She also contributed to Ambrose Akinmusire’s new record for Blue Note and the latest Swans album ‘To Be Kind’. These last two partnerships have left a significant impression on ‘Neuroplasticity’. The indomitable Swans founder Michael Gira appears on ‘Exit Plan’ and Akinmusire joins him on the holocaust of a closer ‘A Season Of Doubt’, as well as permeating most of the record with trumpet lines of an anguished, cracking frailty.

                                                                            TRACK LISTING

                                                                            1. A Broken Memory
                                                                            2. Bodies At Bay
                                                                            3. Old Knives
                                                                            4. A Quiet Chill
                                                                            5. Exit Plan
                                                                            6. Let Loose The Dogs
                                                                            7. Absisto
                                                                            8. Living Signs
                                                                            9. A Formal Invitation
                                                                            10. A Season Of Doubt

                                                                            Can

Out Of Reach - Remastered Edition

Following the release of the ‘Can Vinyl Box’ - the limited edition box set that consisted of 17 LPs housed in a linen wrapped box, Mute are now proud to release the Can studio albums individually on vinyl.

‘Out Of Reach’, ‘Can’, ‘Rite Time’, ‘Delay’ and ‘Unlimited Edition’ are the third wave in the series, following ‘Monster Movie’, ‘Soundtracks’, ‘Tago Mago’, ‘Ege Bamyasi’, ‘Future Days’, ‘Soon Over Babaluma’, ‘Landed’, ‘Flow Motion’ and ‘Saw Delight’.

The albums were mastered and cut to vinyl by Kevin Metcalfe at The Soundmasters, London. The remastering and vinyl processing was coordinated by long time collaborator Jono Podmore. Additional titles will be released over the coming months.

‘Out Of Reach’ has been unavailable in any official format since its original release in 1978.

‘Out Of Reach’ is one of Can’s rarest, less-known albums. This is due in a large part to the fact that bassist Holger Czukay left the band and drummer Jaki Liebezeit has a reduced role, leaving most of the rhythm duties to percussionist come-lately Reebop Kwaku Baah.

As on the group’s proper swansong, 1977’s ‘Saw Delight’, new bassist Rosko Gee largely leads the group, and his jazz-inflected playing is marvellous, especially on the centrepiece improvisations ‘November’ and ‘Serpentine’.

                                                                              Can

                                                                              Rite Time - Remastered Edition

‘Rite Time’ was originally released in 1986. Can got back together with original vocalist Malcolm Mooney to record again.

Revaluated as one of the classic Can albums, they show again how everything changes yet remains unmistakably Can.

                                                                                Can

                                                                                    Break Line The Musical

‘Break Line’ is Anand Wilder (Yeasayer co-founder, vocalist / multi-instrumentalist) and Maxwell Kardon’s passion project, created with a community of friends and ten years in the making. ‘Break Line’ is cultivated from a story created back in 2004, a classic tale of betrayal, pride and love lost set to music inspired by concept albums and rock operas of the 1970s.

The list of players captures a very special, collaborative time in Brooklyn, when the music scene was beginning to erupt. In 2008, Anand and Maxwell put together a core band with Ira Wolf Tuton (Yeasayer) on bass and Christopher Powell (Man Man) on drums. Britt Myers (Charlift, Yeasayer, Passing Strange) helped them put their music to tape as they stayed up late experimenting with sounds and arrangements. To round out the cast they enlisted friends from myriad bands: James Richardson (MGMT), bandmate Chris Keating (Yeasayer), Austin Fisher (Suckers), Haley Dekle (Dirty Projectors), Ryan Kattner (Man Man), K Ishibashi (Kishi Bashi) and Aku Orraca-Tetteh (Dragons Of Zynth), amongst others.

Neither can believe that what started with just the two of them huddled on a cold porch would grow to involve a once-in-a-lifetime cast of collaborators.

Plastikman, aka Richie Hawtin recorded 'EX' at the Guggenheim, New York’s iconic art museum. This very special performance was at the invitation of influential Belgium fashion designer and artistic director at Dior, Raf Simons, for the Guggenheim’s annual fundraiser, performed around a specially constructed LED obelisk.

Richie Hawtin explains, “I knew that Raf was a long time Plastikman fan so by accepting his offer to perform at the Dior event at the Guggenheim I knew I’d set myself up to a huge challenge. Although Raf was happy to have the already complete Plastikman Live 1.5 show, I locked myself away in a series of intense studio sessions and quickly recorded enough new material for the performance and realized I might also have enough for a complete new album. The music came out of me effortlessly as I was very inspired by the opportunity to play in this beautiful architectural space renowned more for art than music. The location also allowed me to step far away from the dancefloor, giving me a huge amount of freedom to EXplore any sonic ideas that I had. Art, music, architecture, painting, sculpture – these mediums are supposed to live together.”

Richie Hawtin is many things - an extraordinary DJ, creator of the ENTER. experience, mastermind behind the M_nus label, technological innovator, art aficionado - in 2011 he collaborated with British sculptor Anish Kapoor for an installation in Paris - and style icon. Before this, though, and perhaps most famously of all, he was and is Plastikman, an electronic music phenomenon whose followers are legion and fanatic.

Between 1993 and 2003, Plastikman created an astonishing body of work, one that didn’t so much define a time and place as explode them, expanding the dimensions of Detroit techno and redefining the possibilities of electronic dance music. Across six albums (‘Sheet One’, ‘Musik’, ‘Recycled Plastik’, ‘Consumed’, ‘Artifakts (B.C.)’, and ‘Closer)’ and numerous singles such as ‘Spastik’, ‘Plastique’, and ‘Sickness’, Plastikman evolved into one of contemporary electronic music’s most distinctive voices: minimalist, psychedelic, seriously groove-laden, and ever mindful of the transcendent properties of electronica.

Plastikman was never going to be a heritage dance act and this latest renaissance opens doors few never knew existed, showcasing a master at work.

                                                                                      Monster Movie - Remastered Edition

Following the release of the Can Vinyl Box – the limited edition box set that consisted of 17 LPs housed in a linen wrapped box, Mute are now proud to release the CAN studio albums individually on vinyl.

Released in batches, the first albums in the series to be released are Monster Movie, Soundtracks, Tago Mago and Ege Bamyasi.

The albums were mastered and cut to vinyl by Kevin Metcalfe at The Soundmasters, London. Remasters and vinyl processing was coordinated by long time collaborator, Jono Podmore.

Monster Movie is the debut album of Can, recorded and released in 1969. The use of improvisation, experimentation, editing and layering of sounds set a standard for Can's subsequent albums in the early 1970s, which were seminal to the freewheeling avant-garde style dubbed "krautrock" by the British music press.

The album is credited to "The Can", a name suggested by vocalist Malcolm Mooney and adopted by democratic vote. Previously the band had been known as "Inner Space", which later became the name of their purpose-built recording studio. Some copies of the LP bore the subtitle "Made in a castle with better equipment", referring to Schloss Nörvenich, the 14th-century castle in North Rhine-Westphalia where the band recorded from 1968-69.

The 20-minute jam "Yoo Doo Right" was pared down from 6 hours' taping, while the lyrics of "Mary, Mary So Contrary" riff off of Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary, a popular English nursery rhyme.

Monster Movie was the only Can album on which Malcolm Mooney performed all of the vocals until Rite Time, 20 years after.

‘#7885 (Electropunk To Technopop) features classic tracks such as ‘Nag Nag Nag’, ‘Do The Mussolini (Headkick)’, ‘Sensoria’, ‘Landslide’, ‘I Want You’ and ‘Just Fascination’.

Curated by Richard H Kirk, who explains, “I decided to gather the more concise elements of the work… Hence the choice of 7” singles, edits and shorter album tracks, a kind of soundbite take on CV.”

‘#7885 (Electropunk To Technopop)’ compiles two distinct periods of Cabaret Voltaire - 1978-81 and 1983-85 - for the first time together on one release and follows the remastered vinyl release of ‘Red Mecca’ and already legendary sold out box set ‘#8385 (Collected Works 1983-1985)’.

The compilation travels from 1978-81 with a line up of Richard H Kirk, Stephen Mallinder and Chris Watson, when Cabaret Voltaire were (mostly) recording at the Western Works Studios in Sheffield and releasing records on Rough Trade and from 1983-85 after Watson’s departure when Kirk and Mallinder released via the Some Bizzare label on Virgin Records. Kirk points out that this “was a time where we got to do what we do, but in different areas, we wanted to push the boundaries of electronic music, we wanted to place what we were doing into places where it really shouldn't be. We certainly didn't want to carry on repeating what we'd done for the ten years previous.”

Cabaret Voltaire formed in 1973 and, alongside Human League, Throbbing Gristle, Fad Gadget and The Normal, were at the forefront of the UK electronic movement of the late 70s. Way ahead of their time, Cabaret Voltaire’s blend of dance music, techno, dub, house and experimental made them, without a doubt, one of the most influential acts of the last 40 years.

Starved of all the adornments of its predecessor; wholly absent of guitar, of piano, of string instruments and natural wooden intimacy, ‘A U R O R A’ offers a defiant new world of fiercely synthetic shapes and galactic interference, pummelling skins and pure metals.

                                                                                        TRACK LISTING

Following the release of the Can Vinyl Box – the limited edition box set that consisted of 17 LPs housed in a linen wrapped box, Mute are now proud to release the CAN studio albums individually on vinyl.

Released in batches, the first albums in the series to be released are Monster Movie, Soundtracks, Tago Mago and Ege Bamyasi.

The albums were mastered and cut to vinyl by Kevin Metcalfe at The Soundmasters, London. Remasters and vinyl processing was coordinated by long time collaborator, Jono Podmore.

Soundtracks is a compilation album, first released in 1970, consisting of tracks written for film.

The album marks the departure of the band's original vocalist Malcolm Mooney, who sings on two tracks, to be replaced by new member Damo Suzuki.

"She Brings the Rain", originally appearing in the 1969 film Bottom – Ein großer, graublauer Vogel by Thomas Schamoni, was later featured in Wim Wenders' 1994 film Lisbon Story, the 2000 Oskar Roehler film Die Unberührbare and Tran Anh Hung's film Norwegian Wood, released in 2010.

"Don't Turn the Light On, Leave Me Alone" features Damo Suzuki's first recorded performance with Can.

In March 2005, Q magazine placed "Mother Sky" at number 48 in its list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Tracks.

                                                                                          ?? (Infinity)

‘∞’ (Infinity) is the follow up to 2011’s ‘Skyline’, which was described by Mojo as “life affirming”, by Clash as a “remarkable musical talent” and in Drowned in Sound’s 8 star review as “euphoric”.

Conceived in Iceland, where work began on the album, and in Ushant Island, Brittany. The album was produced by Yann Tiersen and mixed by Gareth Jones with Yann Tiersen and Daniel Miller.

For this album Tiersen has worked with native language speakers to include tracks sung and spoken in Breton (‘Ar Maen Bihan’), Faroese (‘Grønjørd’) and Icelandic (‘Steinn’). ‘Ar Maen Bihan’ is a story written by Emilie Quinquis in the Breton language, and was then translated by Amiina to Icelandic to create the track ‘Steinn’. Elsewhere on the album Aidan Moffat (Arab Strap) and Ólavur Jákupsson (a member of Tiersen’s live band) both contributed tracks on the same theme - stones - Moffat’s in English and Jákupsson’s in Faroese.

Hailing from Brittany, Yann Tiersen is one of the most revered artists of his generation, with a reputation first established by his studio albums (which included 1997’s ‘Cascade Street’, 1998’s ‘The Lighthouse’ and 2005’s ‘Les Retrouvailles’). The early albums were combined and used for the ‘Amelie’ soundtrack (2001), earning him global recognition. Recent Mute albums ‘Dust Lane’ (2010) and ‘Skyline’ (2011) has seen his prominence build, along with projects such as the recent live score to the Fantômas series which he curated at the Théâtre de Châtelet with guests Tim Hecker, James Blackshaw, Loney Dear and Amiina.

                                                                                            Swans

                                                                                              A NOTE FROM MICHAEL GIRA:
"Hello There, we (Swans) have recently completed our new album. It is called To Be Kind. It will be available as a triple vinyl album, a double CD, and a 2XCD Deluxe Edition that will include a live DVD.

The album was produced by me, and it was recorded by the venerable John Congleton at Sonic Ranch, outside El Paso Texas, and further recordings and mixing were accomplished at John’s studio in Dallas, Texas. We commenced rehearsals as Sonic Ranch in early October 2013, began recording soon thereafter, then completed the process of mixing with John in Dallas by mid December 2013.

A good portion of the material for this album was developed live during the Swans tours of 2012/13. Much of the music was otherwise conjured in the studio environment.

The Swans are: Michael Gira, Norman Westberg, Christoph Hahn, Phil Puleo, Thor Harris, Christopher Pravdica.

Special Guests for this record include: Little Annie (Annie sang a duet with me on the song Some Things We Do, the strings for which were ecstatically arranged and played by Julia Kent); St. Vincent (Annie Clark sang numerous, multi-tracked vocals throughout the record); Cold Specks (Al contributed numerous multi-tracked vocals to the song “Bring the Sun”); Bill Rieflin (honorary Swan Bill played instruments ranging from additional drums, to synthesizers, to piano, to electric guitar and so on. He has been a frequent contributor to Swans and Angels of Light and is currently playing with King Crimson)." - I love you! Michael Gira.

Their third album since reforming in 2010, 'To Be Kind' finds them even surpassing the near perfect 'The Seer' with a beautifully orchestrated maelstrom of swaggering sonic delight. You won't hear a better experimental rock album all year!

Mick Harvey is set to release a double collection of his two Serge Gainsbourg albums, ‘Intoxicated Man’ and ‘Pink Elephants’, through Mute.

‘Intoxicated Man’ (1995) and ‘Pink Elephants’ (1997) are Mick Harvey’s interpretations of the songs of legendary singer, songwriter and poet Serge Gainsbourg and are the first major works translating Gainsbourg’s influential work from French to English. The collection will include two unreleased tracks, ‘Dr. Jeckyll’ and ‘Run From Happiness’.

Originally Harvey embarked on the project as a result of his own curiosity about the songs and particularly the lyrics. At the time of the original recordings Gainsbourg was little known outside classic works such as ‘Je T’aime… Moi Non Plus’ (‘I Love You… Nor Do I’), ‘Lemon Incest’, ‘Harley Davidson’, ‘Initials B.B.’ and ‘Bonnie & Clyde’. On this collection these classic works are presented alongside some of Gainsbourg’s lesser known compositions.

The vocal parts originally sung by Gainsbourg’s muses Jane Birkin, Brigitte Bardot and daughter Charlotte Gainsbourg are here sung by longtime collaborator Anita Lane. Guests on the albums include Bertrand Burgalat, Warren Ellis and David McClymont.

The reissues follow Mick Harvey’s 2013 album, ‘FOUR (Acts Of Love)’, which was the former Bad Seed and PJ Harvey collaborator’s sixth solo studio album, and the follow up to 2011’s ‘Sketches From The Book Of The Dead’.

                                                                                                Laibach

                                                                                                Spectre

‘Spectre’ follows the band’s widely acclaimed conceptual album ‘Volk’ (2006), where Laibach interpreted national anthems of historically imperialistic nations, and the release of the side projects ‘Laibachkunstderfuge’ (2008) and ‘Iron Sky: The Original Film Soundtrack’ (2012).

Laibach have once again ‘re-invented’ themselves into a newly born, yet polished and solid, formation. And, as is now customary, Laibach call into question all the rigid and cemented interpretations (and prejudices) about themselves, about their music, intentions, philosophy and ideology. Laibach are masters of escape, true escape artists. And yet, despite everything, ‘Spectre’ resonates as a real and full-blooded Laibachian work and nothing else.

With ‘Spectre’ Laibach have created a big, important, and almost dangerous step forward; it seems that this time it has fatally crossed the Rubicon. On this album the group - which has never defined itself politically, but has, nevertheless, constantly analysed politics through its work - comes across as politically engaged as never before. ‘Spectre’ literally sounds like a political manifesto in poetic form. Titles and lyrics couldn’t be more direct. With these lyrics and songs, Laibach, who have always given a controversial impression - or an impression of controversy - especially in terms of its political orientation, is now very clearly taking a position on the political spectrum and probably irreversibly abolishing its own (to some extent quite comfortable) political ‘freedom’ and neutrality.

The album opens with ‘The Whistleblowers’, a contagiously optimistic piece of classic ‘militant and symphonic’ Laibach, sounding like the sequel to Lieutenant F J Ricketts’ 1914 ‘Colonel Bogey March’. ‘No History’ knows no mercy, and leaves no doubt: Laibach require uncompromising action, they demand bravery and boldness and seek heroes “who will be the creed of a new political faith”. And, in one of the verses of this song, listeners can find a mini ‘manifesto’ about the album itself, its sonic expression, and the position of the group in relation to its own history.

In amongst these rallying calls from the band sits a rare Laibach love song: ‘We Are Millions And Millions Are One’ deals with love in today’s impossible times, times which are dangerously close to the fictional reality of classic anti-utopian novels such as Yevgeny Zamyatin’s ‘We’, Laibach’s inspiration for this song.

Ending the album is the elegant utopian song ‘Koran’, a track that shows the possibility of a better and fairer world - on Earth or in the hereafter. Consequently, the album ends with the (in)complete, open, unfinished sound of a piano key.

Released in 1984, it is considered the group’s most mainstream release, with the singles ‘Sensoria’ and ‘James Brown’ gaining popularity, especially due to the music video finding MTV airplay.

                                                                                                          Tales Of Us

‘Tales Of Us’ is Goldfrapp’s sixth studio album, and is strikingly cinematic in its aural feel. The album feel like a continuation of the gentle 60s psych-pop of 'Seventh Tree', but given a filmic twist. Simple acoustic guitar work is augmented with lush, sweeping orchestration, while Alison's voice is as seductive as ever. Lush and dreamy and atmospheric, 'Tales Of Us' is an intimate offering for autumnal evenings.

The songs’ narrative form makes sense given they were born out of a rediscovered love of cinema and the written word for singer Alison. All the songs bar one are named in the first person with a cast list of evocative character sketches, the contrary love affairs, the suspense, hallucinations, fairy tales and modern folklores documented and the traces of redemption they find in song take the poetry of Goldfrapp’s delicately considered music somewhere brand new.

Additionally a stunningly beautiful film has been created by Lisa Gunning that showcases five of the songs from the album.

To date, it is the last Bad Seeds album to feature founding member Blixa Bargeld.

This album reunited Nick Cave with Nick Launay, who had produced The Birthday Party’s groundbreaking ‘Junkyard’ album 21 years earlier.

Featuring the singles ‘Bring It On’, ‘He Wants You’ and ‘Rock Of Gibraltar’, this album finds Cave moving away from ‘Murder Ballads’ and the gory fire and brimstone of yore and exploring more personal themes.

More than twenty years into his career at this point, Nick Cave proved himself worthy of the comparisons made in the press on his behalf: now he could stand alongside the likes of Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash and Tom Waits as a storyteller who could be unflinchingly honest in his work, whilst continuing to grow his fanbase.

This CD and DVD version includes the original album in 5.1 surround sound plus 7 bonus tracks and 4 bonus videos.

Mute announce the release of Carter Tutti Void’s 'Transverse', a unique collaboration from Chris Carter & Cosey Fanni Tutti (Throbbing Gristle) and Nik Void (Factory Floor).

Transverse is a unique collaboration, created especially for the legendary Short Circuit presents Mute festival at the Roundhouse, London in 2011.

The tracks were prepared in the studio and then performed and recorded live in front of an audience. Outside of the trio, these recordings were unheard prior to the festival and the popularity of the performance left many being turned away at the door.

Mute is proud to make this groundbreaking recording available and to be working again with two of electronic music’s true pioneers and one of its new trail blazers.

Said The Quietus of the performance: “…a warm embrace, creating a deep connection… Carter at the back manipulates the electronics while on either flank, Void scratches noise with bowed guitar and Tutti plays while singing vocals that she mangles and distorts… there is no nihilism in this noise, nothing but a deep and wonderful sense of love.”

"I'm Gonna Live" is the second single taken from the album Skyline and is presented in limited edition 7" format. Inspired by the title of the Alan Lomax's Southern Journey 1959 album "I'm Gonna Live Until I Die" the title track focuses on the tiny pleasures of life as Yann sings about the tiny moments that make him feel alive.

The single is backed with an instrumental version of "Vanishing Point" in which Yann uses samples of instruments and noises from all the other tracks on his own album 'Skyline', compiling them together to form this haunting final track.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds

The album showcases the virtuoso talents of the Bad Seeds, with elaborate instrumental sections on nearly every track.

This CD and DVD version includes the original album in 5.1 surround sound, 7 bonus tracks and 4 bonus videos.

Let Love In (2011 Digital Remaster) - Collectors Edition

‘Let Love In’, the eighth album by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, is in many ways the group’s wholly realised work.

Even more than their 1998 ‘Best Of’, it stands as the best introduction to the eloquent and elegant netherworld of Godless fornicators, murderers, the bereft and drunk and lonely and lost conjured up by Cave and his suited cohorts.

Recorded two years after the flawed (according to the band; many fans regard it as another classic) signpost that was ‘Henry’s Dream’ and just before the bloody and body-strewn Kylie-featuring ‘Murder Ballads’, ‘Let Love In’ not only pointed towards The Bad Seeds’ future direction but harked back to their blustering, violent roots.

This CD and DVD version includes the original album in 5.1 surround sound, plus bonus tracks and bonus videos.

‘The Boatman’s Call’ is the tenth studio album by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, originally released in 1997.

The album is entirely piano-based and remains one of the most critically acclaimed releases of Nick Cave’s career.

Musically, the album’s tone is considered sombre and minimalist and marks a major departure. Moving away from full band arrangements and character-based narratives, the album’s music and lyrics move towards the more intimate sound of Cave’s solo voice accompanied by piano or a few other instruments.

After years of pursuing Angels of Light and recording and producing a diverse roster of artists for his Young God label, Michael Gira has reconvened his legendary group Swans. As he says: 'This is not a reunion. It's not some dumb-ass nostalgia act. It is not repeating the past. After five Angels of Light albums, I need a way to move forward, in a new direction, and it just so happens that revivifying the idea of Swans allows me to do that'.

This highly anticipated album is as powerful and diverse as anything Gira's ever done, in Swans or otherwise. It opens with the epic, soul-crushing "No Words / No Thoughts", but quickly veers to more pastoral terrain, and on to ever-ascending monotonal grooves. A filmic-folk idyll featuring Devendra Banhart on lead vocal abruptly shifts to cataclysm, and is followed by more airplane-taking-off ascensions, art songs and lethal sonic pummelling. In short, this is the new Swans album, a significant advance from where they left off and as challenging and emotionally demanding as ever.

The swans are back, long live the Swans!

The album was recorded during several sessions over the course of four months in West Berlin and London and was produced by Flood.

‘The Weeping Song’ and ‘The Ship Song’ have now become firm fan favourites. ‘Foi Na Cruz’ is based partly upon the traditional Brazilian Protestant hymn of the same title. The title translates roughly as ‘It Happened On The Cross’.

Cave later said, “I guess ‘The Good Son’ is some kind of reflection of the way I felt early on in Brazil. I was quite happy there. I was in love and the first year or two was good. The problem I found was... in order to survive you have to adopt their attitudes towards everything, which are kind of blinkered.”

Kraftwerk's first fully digital album confirmed their clubland credentials and reworked 11 of their best-loved tunes for a new generation. Painstakingly reconstructed and sequenced in the band's Kling Klang studio, new versions of tracks like "The Robots", "Trans Europe Express" and "Home Computer" now feature more funky rhythms and cleaned-up, liquid-crystal sounds. A stark warning about pollution at Sellafield is added to the glistening overhaul of "Radioactivity", sparking a war of words with British Nuclear Fuels. But most of all, "The Mix" is a career-spanning collection of legendary electro anthems and a classy acknowledgment of the two-way traffic between Kraftwerk and club culture.

Their "Techno Pop" album, first released under the name "Electric Café" but now restored to its originally intended title, provides a 360-degree overview of a multi-lingual, multi-channel, musically diverse global village. From the block-rocking beats of "Boing Boom Tschack" to the electronic funk and computer animation of "Musique Non Stop", Kraftwerk soar into the digital age. Their first excursion into digital recording finds both beauty and unease in a polyglot world of permanent media overload. Once again, Dusseldorf's test pilots of the musical future effortlessly break new ground.

The symphonic title track, an epic ode to the joys of motorway travel, wraps a mesmerising motorik rhythm around a sampled collage of car horns, engine noise, whirring tyres and radio crackle. In edited form, it becomes a revolutionary hit single around the world. Elsewhere, in wordless industrial folk music, the band reveal both their light and dark sides – "Mitternacht" is all creeping midnight shadows, while "Morgenspaziergang" is fresh with morning dew and birdsong. Two versions of "Kometenmelodie", one a starkly gothic prowl, the other a sunny electro boogie, provide further instrumental sound paintings. Pure and strong and bold, Kraftwerk compose cinema for the ears. The pop world falls in love with them.

Although it features an immaculate new version of a 20-year-old former single, the exquisitely graceful "Tour de France", pop nostalgia is not on the menu. From the chunky cyber-funk of "Vitamin" to the restless metallic shimmers of "Aéro Dynamik", this is emphatically the sound of 21st century techno visionaries.

A journey into the bright hopes and dark fears of the booming microchip revolution, "Computer World" is a serenely beautiful and almost seamless collage of sensual melodies and liquid beatscapes. Tracks like "Numbers" and "Pocket Calculator", with their weightless bleeps and elastic beats, predict the silky rhythms of Chicago house and inspire a generation of Detroit techno artists. Kraftwerk's fanfare for the silicon age still sounds ageless, timeless and throbbing with invention.

Surfing on sine waves, scanning the stratosphere for stray radio signals, they plug themselves into a buzzing grid of energy and communication. From the stately eco-angst anthem "Radioactivity" to the synthetic Gregorian chants of "Radio Stars" and the melancholy machine processional of "Ohm Sweet Ohm", a sombre but engrossing monumentalism dominates. With heavily processed vocals in both German and English, Kraftwerk go global with depth and majesty. If factories and power stations are the new cathedrals, they write liturgies for a new industrial epoch.

A bold new look, sound and concept for Kraftwerk. Over supple processed rhythms which predate the rise of European techno and trance, they address automation and alienation, space travel and engineering, the seductive allure of urban landscapes and the vacant glamour of celebrity. Clipped and funky, "The Robots" adds another dimension to Kraftwerk's ultra-dry sense of humour. Behind its intoxicating melodic pulse, "The Model" is a highly prophetic satire on the beauty industry, so ahead of its time that it only becomes a UK chart-topper by accident three years later. And "Neon Lights" is Kraftwerk's most achingly romantic song to date, a sci-fi lullaby for cities at twilight. Pure magic.

The infinite vistas of "Europe Endless" and "Endless Endless" bookend the album, which includes the unsettling Kafka-esque fable "The Hall Of Mirrors" and the hilarious "Showroom Dummies" - Kraftwerk's elegantly ironic reply to critiques of their deadpan manner. But it is the streamlined rhythmic locomotive of "Trans Europe Express" which dominates with its doppler-effect melodic swerves and hypnotic, pneumatic, piston-pumping rhythm. Along with its sister track, "Metal On Metal" which New York DJ Afrika Bambaataa would re-construct five years later for his own seminal "Planet Rock", this milestone in avant-pop modernism later becomes a crucial influence on the early pioneers of hip-hop & sampling, electro and industrial music. Poetry in motion.

Cave explores his fascination with the American South, with references ranging from Elvis Presley to ‘Blind’ Lemon Jefferson.

Recorded in Berlin, Cave later said of this album: “Berlin gave us the freedom and encouragement to do whatever we wanted. We’d lived in London for three years and it seemed that if you stuck your head out of the box, people were pretty quick to knock it back in, particularly if you were Australian. When we came to Berlin it was the opposite. People saw us as some kind of force rather than a kind of wacky novelty act.”

The album’s title is a reference to Jesse Garon Presley, the stillborn identical twin of Elvis Presley, and ‘Wanted Man’ was Cave’s own take on a song Bob Dylan wrote for Johnny Cash. Dylan gave his permission for the lyrics to be changed, with Cave’s interpretation referencing his friends.

Also features the apocalyptic classic ‘Tupelo’.

This was the band’s fourth studio album and was released on November 3rd 1986 and was originally released as a double EP, with production duties handled by Flood and Tony Cohen.

Cave later remarked: “That particular record, which is my favourite of the records we’ve done, is very special to me and a lot of amazing things happened, musically, in the studio. There are some songs on that record that as far as I’m concerned are just about perfect as we can get really - songs like ‘The Carny’, ‘Your Funeral My Trial’, and ‘Stranger Than Kindness’, I think are really quite brilliant.”

An album of covers by the likes of Leadbelly, Jim Webb, Alex Harvey, Gene Pitney, Tim Rose and the Velvet Underground amongst others, all reworked and reconstructed with expert menacing detail by the Bad Seeds who combine superbly with Cave's excellent vocal performance. The major shock here is how well this collection of songs works as an album!!!

This is one of the first four albums in a series that will see the band's entire album catalogue digitally remastered and remixed for the first time since their original release.
All 14 albums will be available as remastered CD and as a deluxe Collectors Edition which will feature the remastered album plus a DVD with the entire album in 5.1 surround sound, a specially commissioned short film made by acclaimed UK artists Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard plus the b-sides from the singles and exclusive sleeve notes.

                                                                                                                                        Lady's Bridge

"Lady's Bridge" is filled with enough classics to last you a lifetime. Great music doesn't need hype, it makes its own friends. And "Lady's Bridge" will find plenty. As they did in "Coles Corner", ghosts haunt "Lady's Bridge" – the dying embers of past romances in "Valentine", the 16-piece string orchestral lush opener, there are the victims of the Great Sheffield Flood remembered in "Roll River Roll" and the glorious "The Sun Refused To Shine", the lonesome wanderlust of "The Sea Calls" and "Dark Road". There is tenderness (the lovely "Our Darkness" which finds our hero returning to the sanctuary of home) and grit too, the first single – "Tonight The Streets Are Ours" is quite possibly the most beautiful song about the brutality of the British government's anti-social behaviour policy you are ever likely to hear. The album's title "Lady's Bridge" is a Sheffield landmark and the oldest bridge to cross the river Don. 'I used to walk across it nearly every day, it was a gateway from the poor bit of town to the rich bit' - Richard Hawley. The album was recorded at Yellow Arch Studio in Neepsend, Sheffield in the dilapidated building that Hawley had helped out with the restoration of almost four years ago. Yellow Arch gives Hawley what he calls 'that Sun Studio red light factor' and the pressure of turning up with the bones of an idea and leaving with a masterpiece.

                                                                                                                                          Grinderman

Grinderman are Nick Cave, Warren Ellis, Martyn Casey and Jim Sclavunos. Foul-mouthed, noisy, hairy, and damn well old enough to know better. Here Nick Cave moves away from the contemplative sound of his recent releases with The Bad Seeds, back to his Birthday Party roots to create an amazingly raw and powerful album.

                                                                                                                                            Liars

                                                                                                                                            Drum's Not Dead

"Drum's Not Dead", the band's third album and the follow up to 2004's "They Were Wrong, So We Drowned" was partly inspired by a relocation from New York to Berlin. It finds Angus Andrew, Aaron Hemphill and Julian Gross taking another seismic step forward, switching continents and seizing new musical territory. It's also their finest and fullest album to date, shredding all past reference points. Both formats come loaded with its own cinematic sister project: a DVD with three film versions of the album, "Drum's Not Bread" (directed by Julian Gross), "The Helix Aspersa" (directed by Angus Andrew) and "By Your Side" (by award-winning filmmaker Markus Wambsganss). Each film comprises of videos for each of the tracks on the album: that's 36 videos in total. From backstage travelogues to surreal animation and mini sci-fi epics, Liars document the process of recording, touring, then visually reinventing each track. It's an ambitious and groundbreaking expansion of the album format, throwing down the gauntlet for other creatively ambitious bands to follow suit.

Kraftwerk are one of the most influential bands in pop history and over the last two years, Ralf Hütter, Florian Schneider, Fritz Hilpert and Henning Schmitz have toured the world performing approximately 90 live shows that were unlike anything seen before, prompting global headlines such as this from the London Evening Standard: 'Is This the Greatest Show London Has Ever Seen?'.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds

Not just one album but two from Saint Nick. In a strange perverse way the loss from his band of guitarist Blixa Bargeld has seen them return to the taught, edgy and highly strung sounds that he helped to create: The sound of say "Let Love In", "Murder Ballads" and "Henry's Dream". Death, sex, religion, drugs, gospel gothic and deep romance in fact all of Cave's favourite topics are covered here in a fresh whirlwind of classic song after classic song. This stands up as one of Nick Cave's best ever albums, and don't forget, there's two of them!! Hallelujah!!!

                                                                                                                                                  Laibach

Laibach, who formed in their home country of Slovenia in 1980, have produced some of the most thought provoking and dramatic art over the past twenty years. On "Wat" Laibach accelerate once more, fuelled by the contradictions and controversies of a 23-year history, dragging audiences into their own temporal zone, conjuring up the normally hidden forces supporting the regimes that govern our reality. "Wat" interrogates both Laibach's own history and the desires and projections of its audiences.

All of the classics are featured here, "Deanna", "The Ship Song", "Papa Won't Leave You Henry", "Tupelo", "Jack The Ripper", "From Her To Eternity" and many more. But none of those tracks eclipse the live energy of the utterly superb "The Mercy Seat". 13 tracks that showcase the genius and power of Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds in the live setting.
