Mellow Magic Worldwide Pt 1

Be Strong Be Free debuts a new series here, Mellow Magic Worldwide, which will offer up a series of DJ weapons that have been produced by "worldwide studio buds." The first one opens with some superb tackle from Gold Suite whose brilliant 'Crush' is a slow-burning 80s jam and emotive rollercoaster that has made a real impact during road testing experiments. On the flipside is the mysterious Mancunian Visions Of Eden who debuts on vinyl with a lush deep house jam 'When It Has Past' that has a subtle Balearic charm. Lastly comes Murrin who heads up the Puca Sounds label and co-runs Berlin party Fandango. His 'Maybe Tonight' is a late-night cosmic delight.

U-Roy

The Seven Gold - 2024 Reissue

The late foundation deejay U-Roy recorded The Seven Gold at Michael Carroll's Creative Sounds Studio in Kingston (with assistance from engineer, and singer & producer in his own right, Paul Davidson) for Prince Jazzbo's Ujama imprint - with the LP then seeing the light of day on the label in 1987, and now a reissue on Death Is Not The End sub-label 333.

It features the late, great Ewart Beckford appearing on a range of killer Jazzbo-produced late-80s digitap rhythms - from the inspired Replay version on 'Holo Gow', to the updated digital take on the Heavenless rhythm on 'Jah Jah Call You' and his take on Horace Ferguson's Sensi Addict in 'Musikal Addick'. The bulk of these rhythm tracks were performed by revered multi-instrumentalist Tyrone Downie (a long-time member of Bob Marley & The Wailers since the mid 70s) alongside Tony "Asher" Brissett - another massively undersung session musician perhaps most notable for laying down the initial Sleng Teng rhythm track for Jammys in 1984.

Following two revered albums, ‘Dissolve’ in 2017 and ‘Avalanche’ in 2019, London-based electronic songwriter and producer Tusks, aka Emily Underhill, has returned with her third. ‘Gold’ is released via One Little Independent.

    “Hugely satisfying” - DIY

“A force to be reckoned with” - Wonderland

“Atmospheric and reflective” - The Line of Best Fit

Synth-heavy and fuelled by emotionally charged layers of heavenly vocal harmonies, the album is densely constructed, meticulously produced and cathartic. Across ten tracks of deeply resonant electronic pop, the soundscapes crafted here sway from the blissful, ambient and thought-provoking, to slow-building ragers. Through pressure and release, ‘Gold’ explores dynamics, nuances and emotions using an array of atmospheric and kinetic textures as well as Tusks’ singular, powerful voice.

Anyone familiar with her career to date will note that Tusks’ relationship with music as a means to communicate vulnerability is well documented. There’s a raw, exposed nature to her writing that feels authentic and intimate. She often describes the complications and subtleties of relationships in a way that’s reflective and relatable. ‘Gold’ maps various stages in the breakdown of a romance, but it also stops to consider the impact of isolation, individually and socially, as well as anxiety, mental health and the wider effects of austerity.

      Dean McPhee

      Astral Gold

Dean McPhee’s fifth full length album 'Astral Gold' sees the Yorkshire-based electric guitarist's music continue to evolve beyond the spacious folk-inspired fingerpicking that typified his earlier releases into a heavier sound combining deep bass, textured reverbs and waves of saturated delay. 'Astral Gold' brings together several now out-of-print tracks that were originally released on the Reverb Worship and Folklore Tapes labels, along with two brand new pieces – all recorded live in single takes. There is a cosmic theme throughout, including a track based on the local lore of The Ilkley Alien (The Second Message), a trance-inducing drone piece inspired by the orbit of the 'doomed moon' Triton (Neptune) and a meditation on lunar volcanism combining baroque melodies, EBow bass and found recordings of a crackling fire played through guitar pickups (Lunar Fire).

Throughout this intricately layered and beautifully crafted album McPhee draws on a wide range of influences from Kosmische Muzik and Dub to Stoner/Doom Rock, British Folk and underground electronic music, and the result is both intoxicatingly atmospheric and sonically inventive. ‘Astral Gold’ was mastered and cut by Anne Taegert at Dubplates & Mastering in Berlin and is pressed on 180g heavyweight vinyl. ‘Astral Gold’ follows Dean McPhee’s recent appearances this year on several well received compilation albums ‘I Thought I Told You: A Yorkshire Tribute to Michael Chapman’ on the Tompkins Square label, ‘Ballads of Seduction, Fertility & Ritual Slaughter’ released by Wasistdas, and Folklore Tapes’ limited edition cassette ‘A Web of Braided Willow (The Folklore of the Wickerman)’. "His take on the late folk guitarist’s ‘Caddo Lake’ could have you believing the pinch of callous on string was birdsong – a meditative gem" (Noel Gardner, The Quietus) "Magpahi's synth-drizzled Maypole, Dean McPhee's Sunset and Meg Baird's Willow's Song are particularly gorgeous" (Jude Rogers. The Guardian) "An excellent new single from UK guitarist Dean McPhee...the A-side is an echo-laden slice of smoldering instrumental guitar, pulling at the mind like taffy and living up to its cosmic title" (Raven Sings the Blues) "Absolutely lovely stuff; shimmering, gorgeous, delicate electric guitar playing of the very highest quality" (Gavin McNamara, Tradfolk.co).

        STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: I've loved everything Dean McPhee has done thus far, having only started listening to his music about 5 years ago i've had to backtrack but it's become clear that his skill for crafting intricate soundworlds and beautiful, evocative dreamstates is only increasing. 'Astral Gold' is exactly that, a glimmering treasure in his catalog and another reason that you need to listen to McPhee's work, as much a collection as it is a fully-fledged album.

          Prince

The Gold Experience - 2023 Reissue

The Gold Experience, released in 1995, was the first full-length Prince album to be credited to his unpronounceable symbol and was released at the most public, heated stage of his battle with the major label industrial complex. With the word “SLAVE” written on one cheek, Prince shined on the opulent ballads “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World” and “Gold” and the defiant single “[eye] Hate U,” and the album earned widespread critical acclaim. Available as black vinyl double LP.

Top tier tackle from Heels & Souls Recordings for their fourth reissue as they let loose a much anticipated double header, Gold In The Shade’s 'Over You' backed with 'Shining Through'. Rough, tough, straight-from-the-heart ‘90s street soul, coming courtesy of TSR bossman Robert Roper and the Gold In The Shade ladies Arletta Davis and Sonia Johnson. One of the most sought-after cuts of this scene, it encompasses much of what made street soul special - heavy bass, gritty breaks, emotive chords and off-kilter vocals, marrying together to form a snapshot of a raw DIY scene with optimism at its heart.

The trio’s first single from 1990, ‘Shining Through’ is a no nonsense, bassbin-rattling love song from the underground, seeing long-term friends Sonia and Arletta pulling on the heartstrings from the mic as Robert works his magic behind the studio controls.

Lovingly remastered from the DAT by Cicely Balston, if only ‘Over You’ had been so easy. Two years of endless searching for the tape and subsequently a clean copy of the record, Heels & Souls even went to the lengths of having the multitracks restored so that Robert could attempt to recreate the original mixdown in the studio – but the magic of ‘91, unfortunately, can’t simply be conjured at the drop of a hi-hat.

After all but losing hope, Sean P (by way of Backatcha’s Aiden Leacy), came to the rescue with a mint condition copy of the record that he had from running in the same circles as Robert and Duval back in the day, ripping and restoring it with a precision he’s rightly famed for. And so (finally!) here it is: distorted samples, low-fi hits, speaker rumbling bassweight and all. Raw to the core, but that’s the point – pure, unbridled emotion from the depths of North West London.

Fully licensed from Robert Roper, 20% of profits from Heels & Souls Recordings and Prime Direct Distribution will be donated to Lives Not Knives, a youth-led London-based charity, working to prevent knife crime, serious youth violence and school exclusions.

            Clive Stevens And Brainchild

Mystery Man - Inc. Velvet Season & The Hearts Of Gold Remix

The third release on Midnight Drive takes us back to the heady days of 1984, New York City. We find Clive Stevens, a UK born saxophonist, producer, writer and poet at the helm of a truly staggering cast of international musicians known as 'Brainchild', recording an LP entitled 'Semjase' for Brazilian label Vôo Livre. The LP featured incredible session musicians whose CV's include work with some of the biggest names in popular music including Chic, Kate Bush, Miles Davis, David Bowie, Eric Clapton, Tom Petty and more (the list is endless). One track from this fairly obscure LP - 'Mystery Man' - somehow managed to find its way into the hands of the one and only Daniele Baldelli, who swiftly turned it into a cosmic classic. Present and correct on a number of the cosmic tapes, "Mystery Man" is a truly unique record melding electro-style programming, live percussion, synthesizers and vocals into a blistering slow motion disco jam that'll have you dancing like a loon and scratching your head trying to work out when, where and how it was made. Not content with offering us ucky bunch a first official reissue of this classic, Midnight Drive procured the original 1984 session parts from Clive himself, enabling a brand new remix from Gerry Rooney and Joel Martin aka Velvet Season & The Hearts Of Gold. Stretching the track to new tripped out heights, Gerry and Joel transform the cosmic roller into a dreamy and dubby tropical pop killer perfect for your next Balearic dancefloor set.

            Brooke Combe

            Black Is The New Gold

“You’ve had your story/ time to tell you mine.” So sings Scottish newcomer Brooke Combe on ‘Over You’, one of the many soulful, defiant tracks that make up her debut mixtape. A collection she has honed through years of relentless gigging, each song has its heart in a long lineage of funk and soul, a retro sound that has earnt her endorsement from the likes of the BBC, Rolling Stone UK, The Skinny and NME. It's a style that could easily feel like pastiche, but from the very first note, there can be no doubt that Brooke’s side of the story is entirely her own; a powerful Gen-Z vocalist cutting her own path through the male-dominated indie arena.

“For me, it’s about getting every tune I have done so far out of my head,” explains Combe. “This mixtape is a little bit about the naivety of my adolescent years, but it’s also a bit of a 'who is Brooke Combe', showing people all the different sides to my music. So many people have been coming to the shows now, they've been consistent and loyal. I want them to have what they've been hearing live and to see the development so far.”

              Felt

Gold Mine Trash - 2023 Reissue

Lawrence Hayward knew that he wanted to be a pop star as a teen, and he devised a plan to release ten albums and ten singles over ten years to make that dream come true. A particular and determined individual, he would only be known as Lawrence from that day forward. His hopes for stardom would be pinned on his newly formed band, the succinctly named Felt. Soon signed to Cherry Red Records, Lawrence’s achingly cool vocals and the group’s way with walking melodies were evident on their debut for the label, “Something Sends Me To Sleep.” This compilation collects material from Felt’s Cherry Red period of 1981 to 1985, kicking off with that confident start, assembling numerous high points, and closing with their biggest hit, “Primitive Painters.” This phase of the band is defined by the songwriting partnership and unique interplay of Lawrence and guitarist Maurice Deebank, with Deebank’s stylish and confident playing the envy of many of their counterparts. He delivers a constant string of shimmering hooks that wrap themselves around and over top of Lawrence’s more traditional beat combo song structures, as if trying to fit four songs worth of ideas into a pre-set radio friendly cutoff time. It works wonderfully as Lawrence always counters with a solid bedrock. In one of many brushes with the brass ring, in 1984 Felt recorded versions of “Dismantled King Is Off The Throne” and “Sunlight Bathed The Golden Glow,” for the newly formed and Warners-backed label Blanco y Negro, in hopes that the band would follow their A+R man Mike Alway to the executive suite. Despite putting forward two of their finest songs, it was not to be. While major label dreams had to remain on the shelf, fans were delighted to be able to hear these beautifully stripped down and more direct versions when this compilation was released a few years later. By 1985 the Felt roller coaster was something Maurice Deebank was constantly getting on and off of. As Gary Ainge always kept the beat, and Lawrence never lost focus, they were joined by local teen prodigy Martin Duffy on keyboards, filling out the arrangements, and following Deebank’s racing six-string cascades in “The Day The Rain Came Down” you can even hear a tiny hint of the next phase of the band in Duffy’s organ before Maurice swoops to the finish. The newly expanded Felt would then put everything they had into making one of the defining releases of the 80s: “Primitive Painters.”

                  Medicine

Behind Oakland CA-based ensemble Orchestra GOLD’s original sound is a decade-long story of knowledge, respect, and collaboration between Mariam Diakite of Mali and Erich Huffaker of Oakland. Blending the traditions of Mali and American Rock/Funk with a retro feel, OG represents a world of powerful cross-cultural experience. The group transcends borders and boundaries to be a force of healing within the community. OG offers a kaleidoscope of magical sound deeply rooted in the past while boldly blazing towards the genre-bending future: African Psychedelic Rock. OG’s vibrant sound is spearheaded by the dynamic Mariam Diakite, whose raw, hypnotic vocals deliver heartfelt and thought-provoking lyrics in the highly symbolic Bambara language. While paying homage to Malian musical traditions, this fierce new sound thrives with heavy swinging rhythms, a funky fresh brass section, and cosmic guitar licks. With the January 2023 release of their third album, Medicine, this profoundly spiritual and danceinducing ensemble continues their pursuit of spreading healing and community through the universal gift of music.

                    Gold Panda

Good Luck And Do Your Best - 2022 Reissue

The story of Gold Panda’s journey from an acclaimed debut record to his third full length album, is an entirely circular one. Hailing from Chelmsford Essex in the UK, in the six years since the release of his genre-defining debut album ‘Lucky Shiner’, the electronic artist most comfortable with the moniker Derwin Panda spent the subsequent years splitting the majority of his time between London, Berlin and countless excursions to Japan. As he created his third album "Good Luck And Do Your Best" he ultimately found himself back where he began, in the East of England.

                      Gold Panda

                      The Work

It’s not too rare that an artist would be able to timeline their own personal experiences and growth via the records they release, but very few electronic artists have done it as emotively as Gold Panda. Album title The Work is both a literal statement of the record he took six years to make and deliver, and then, digging deeper, a revelation that it reflects just as much to how he arrived in this place now. The result is a rich album that exudes an assured calm and creative wonder with an artist who’s spent so long getting there

                        STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: It's wonderful to see Gold Panda return with 'The Work', brimming with feel good glitched groove and mpc-led hip-hop adjacent instrumentals. Blissful but with off-kilter melodic counterpoint to scuff the edges of the bright synthetic scree. Really beautiful, but tinged with meditative sadness.

Sow Your Gold In The White Foliated Earth

Sow Your Gold in the White Foliated Earth exists first as a curator’s fancy – in this case from Oslo’s Ultima Festival for contemporary music in 2014. The idea was to give revered Norwegian experimental electronic musician Helge Sten, aka Deathprod, access to seminal avant-garde composer Harry Partch’s self-designed, custom-made, specialized, invented instruments – an orchestra tuned to just intonation, using up to 43 intervals instead of the standard 12 for the most commonly used Western equal temperament.

An artist with a 30+ year career and an uncompromising reputation that reflects the emotional specificity of his uneasy, yet compelling sound, maintained throughout his expansive discography, Sten was an intriguing choice for such a project. Although he attended art school, training in electronic music and sound art, he had little experience with acoustic instruments and can neither read nor write music notation. Yet he’s been engaged with Partch’s music, and outsider art more generally, since he was a teenager. His resulting piece/composition for the project was originally intended only for performance by Cologne-based Ensemble Musikfabrik, for a series of concerts in five European cities between 2015 and 2018. It’s Musikfabrik that undertook the painstaking, expensive process of building an entire set of the composer’s creations – the second only to the originals built by Partch himself. They are the professional musicians and virtuosic instrumentalists that had to re-train and re-educate on these unknown and experimental sound sculptures in non-standard tunings. And they house this large, gorgeous physical instrumentarium and deal with the enormous logistics of working with it, sometimes shipping the fragile pieces to other locales via semi-trucks or ships.

Because of such monumental efforts, Musikfabrik are notoriously guarded with recordings of the instruments. And rightly so. They’re the only ones allowed to perform on them, too. But Sow Your Gold isn’t Musikfabrik playing. Instead, Sten spent days and nights alone with the instrumentarium in Cologne. He played the instruments himself while recording, layering the recordings and editing without effects to compose an ‘audio score’ for Musikfabrik to work from in order for the ensemble to perform the piece. (Partch also regularly worked this way, although he would transcribe afterwards. Likewise, Sten workedwith a professional arranger to create a detailed score, too.) So, that makes Sow Your Gold an even less likely rarity – partly why its release comes seven years after its creation.

If you ask Sten about the album’s title, he’ll point you to the text he borrowed it from – Michael Maier’s Atalanta Fugiens by H.M.E. De Jong, a 1969 study of a 1617 book of alchemical emblems – and notable passages dealing with alchemy, chemistry, and agriculture, all transformative processes. And while that may sound complicated, his takeaway is simple: “You have to break something down to create something new,” – a lesson he felt related strongly to his own musical process, especially in this project.

So, while Sow Your Gold in the White Foliated Earth is a piece written for specific, oddly tuned, extremely rare and unusual instruments, and for a certain ensemble – namely, some of the finest contemporary musicians in Europe – Sten grew fond of the audio score, recognizing it as coming directly from the creative process in its purest, most natural form. And so from a foliated earth, where obscure tradition, treasured scarcity, immense effort, and patient certainty layer and criss-cross, comes rugged gold, polished to shining by one outsider for another.

Spearheaded by the dynamic MARIAM DIAKITE, whose raw and hypnotic vocal stylings deliver heartfelt and thought-provoking lyrics in the highly symbolic Bambara language. Gold

Gold, the follow-up to Alabaster DePlume's widely-acclaimed, 2020-released cinematic instrumental LP To Cy & Lee: Instrumentals Vol. 1, introduces the world to the artist’s truest self. That is... though DePlume’s now known across the globe as the saxophonist who created that collection of wonderful, wordless music, he’s most known to fervent fans in his home zone of London, UK, as an outspoken poet and orator, beloved for his inspiring words of encouragement and sing-a-long-able songs about vulnerability, humanity, and courage. Gold is a sprawling double album that finds DePlume expressing both sides of his artistic character beautifully: (1) an articulate singer and songwriter who invokes the melodious crooning of Donovan as much as Devendra Banhart or Syd Barrett, whose tunes are almost like mini-sermons, full of existential comedy and spiritual enlightenment; and (2) a brilliant composer of simple, soothing, and viscerally nourishing instrumental melodies, with a gift for expanding them into intrepid collective improvisations, led by a delicate and distinguished saxophone tone that conjures the fluttery sweetness of the great Ethiopique Getatchew Mekurya.

The album comes after band leader David Ivar had given up on releasing albums through labels and recorded the whole thing by himself. The late David Berman (Silver Jews) was instrumental in giving Ivar the confidence that he’d written a great bunch of songs. Includes guest performances from Jolie Holland and Caitlin Rose.

                                      Gold

Berlin and Dresden trio JAGUWAR played their way into the hearts of noise romantics with the sprawling sonic landscapes which characterized the trio's 2018 debut album. Their sophomore album GOLD, is set for release in October 2021.

GOLD is a supercharged blast of future pop, transcending borders and defying pigeonholes, an album arising from the band's predisposition to experiment. GOLD is not only danceable, poppy and endearingly intricate, it also flys in the face of the status quo, ask questions of the current state of affairs and the oppressive mechanisms in our society. GOLD is no blunt denunciation, however, but a soundtrack to accompany the realization that there is strength in individuality, thereby unlocking a new level of productiveness.

Black Heavyweight Fair Trade Cotton Tote - Gold Print

Heavyweight fair-trade cotton canvas bag with 12cm (4 1/2") gusset so it's plenty big enough and strong enough to hold a fair chunk of records and also doubles as a rather nice groceries bag.

The third album from Grammy award winner Leon Bridges and it's a suitably sunny, soulful and sumptious affiar. With beautifully flowing, organic song writing, complimented by lush and live instrumental tracks; it's got green gardens, sizzling BBQs and long hot sexy nights eminating off practically every single track! The production is sublime - balancing the traditional instrumentation with just a flurry of electronic umph; adding a brand new sheen and energy to what could easily, otherwise, be mistaken for a classic late 70s soul album.

Opening with a juicy collaboration with Robert Glasper, the album drips effortlessly through its opening quarter, a delicate mix of jazz-informed drumming, picked guitar lines and a liquid gold, syrupy deliver from Bridges. "Steam" arrives, three tracks in with a resplendent chorus and subtle, anthemic qualities.

Opening side B with the title track, garnished with fluffy horns and a slo-mo MPC beat it's an instrumental side akin to some of Madlib's more laid back beats. Thankfully the LP shows little willing to get carried away; sitting beauitfully nestled on a nearly-horizontal plane; sun lounge angle let's say. With soulful droplets woozing languidly off the record, there's little to worry about other than the temperature of your margarita in the sunshine... It's rather something special indeed; intimate, unhurried, as fragile as a flower and simply perfect for timeless and serene afternoon in the garden. Recommended!

Barry says: Beautifully bridging the gap between traditional soul and more modern beat-heavy electronic music, 'Gold-Diggers Sound' brilliantly illustrates Bridges' unparalleled ability as a songwriter and mastery of his wonderfully understated and horizontally cool output. An exciting and fitting follow-up to his excellend collaborative LP with Khruangbin and 2018's wonderful 'Good Thing'.

                                            Green To Gold

Highly anticipated record from New York's beloved act The Antlers, their first new music in seven music Perhaps what distinguishes Green to Gold from the rest of The Antlers’ canon is its arrival at a kind of quiet normalcy after a number of rather anxious records. Conceived and written almost entirely in the morning hours, Green to Gold is the easily their most luminous record to date. Following 2014’s Familiars, it looked unsure as to whether there would even be another Antlers album, after the onset of singer and primary songwriter Peter Silberman’s auditory problems.

Affecting his left ear, it was a condition that left him struggling to cope with commonplace noises. He was subsequently diagnosed with lesions on one of his vocal cords, requiring surgery for their removal and vocal therapy to retrain his voice to sing. Following a relocation to upstate New York and the 10th anniversary tour of 2009's 'Hospice', Silberman was rejuvenated and rediscovered the impulse to create new Antlers music. Of Silberman’s unique vocals, The Guardian wrote “His multi-octave voice is as intense as Jeff Buckley’s or Anohni’s, but it’s vulnerable without being precious or cloying” The first LP pressing is on ltd edition gold vinyl (represses will revert to black vinyl) September 2021 tour TBA, including two shows at EartH, London plus shows in Manchester and Edinburgh

Dipped In Gold Recordings are proud to announce “Another New Thing” The latest project from Sheffield’s number one purveyor of synth pop Dean Honer.

Take three self professed toerags , one in Sheffield UK, one in Preston UK and one in Pennsylvania USA, quarantine them in their houses for 6 months for their own safety, tell them to make an album.

In 2015 Honer, Nagle and Himlin met on a Sonic Weekend in Wales. An annual event which was organised by Ann Shenton of Add N to X. People from all over the world gather in a remote farmhouse surrounded by sheep, to get hammered and make and record noise. Honer (ITOP, Moonlandingz, All Seeing I, I Monster) plays the role of producer for the weekend. Himlin said to Nagle “One day we should make some music together”

2020 Lockdown – Nagle sends Himlin some of his extended modular synthesizer workouts. Himlin writes songs over them and also adds guitar and bass.

Nagle said to Himlin “These aren't too shit, we should send these to Honer to do some mixes and production” And so the the game of audio “exquisite corpse” began. The tunes were passed from person to person via the transatlantic telegraph cable (Wetransfer) to add to or subtract from, until lockdown was eased and they were deemed complete. Himlin casually dubbed the project “Another New Thing,” “because that's what it is!”.

Nagle dubbed the album XYZZY after a magic password key he had discovered playing text based adventure games on his computer in the 70s, the unknown pronunciation being a bonus in his mind.

Barry says: The flawless Dipped In Gold bring us this delightfully off-piste collection of deeply groovy, oftentimes angular melodies and neon synth refrains. Though it was a remote collaboration, there is an inherent connectedness and symbiotic understanding that shows in the most satisfying of ways, resulting in a perfect mix of minds, and a damn good listen. Superb.

Heavy Salad’s Cult Casual is set for release this September 25th through Dipped In Gold Recordings and was recorded by producers Christophe Bride at Oxygene Studio in Manchester and with Ross Orton at McCall Sound in Sheffield. Christophe, known for this work with Spear of Destiny and Theatre of Hate has recently been busy producing the forthcoming ACR album ‘ACR Loco’ forthcoming on Mute Records and Ross, known for his work with Arctic Monkeys and Amyl & The Sniffers has recently produced the forthcoming album by Working Men’s Club on Heavenly Recordings.

The LP was written by Heavy Salad at their base in East Manchester by the core trio of Lee Mann (live bassist with The Moonlandingz), Rob Glennie and Allan Hutchison. The band are joined by live backing singers ‘The Priestesses’ and Oscar Remers. The band bonded over a joint interest in psychedelic horror films with Panos Cosmatos’ cult classic Mandy being a particular favourite, Heavy Salad loved the idea of the band being a psychedelic cult albeit a cult with no rules, hence Cult Casual! The album explores the idea of finding your own reality via hallucinogenic nights plagued with polar bears and conversations with the AI in your phone to imagining after death experiences and apocalyptic visions of the future. Heavy Salad share a love of melody and the sound of the album was influenced by their love of psych pop and acid rock. No distortion pedals were used in the making of Cult Casual.

In life and music, Emma Tricca is an explorer. Just as ‪Davey Graham set sail for Morocco and ‪Vashti Bunyan for the Outer Hebrides in search of their elusive ‪muse, Rome-raised singer-songwriter Tricca has journeyed to London, New York, Texas and further afield to seek the heart of her own music. And like those renowned voyagers, she's returned with a set of songs that refresh the tired old folk form. Tricca's new album St Peter – created with a cast of supporting artists including global icon ‪Judy Collins, ‪Sonic Youth's ‪Steve Shelley and Dream Syndicate guitarist Jason Victor – takes a bracing plunge into the unknown, leaving the folksinger tag far behind with a rolling collection of reverie-inducing raw diamonds.

It was encouragement from ‪Pentangle legend ‪John Renbourn that started Tricca on her lifelong path. An aspiring young player, she met Renbourn after a solo gig in Rome and impressed him with her fresh-cut songs. A move to the UK was inevitable, gigging around folk clubs first in Oxford and later in London, honing her craft as a songwriter and a fingerstyle guitarist. Extended stays in New York and Texas followed, before Tricca returned to London to begin work on her first melancholic masterpiece, 2009's crystalline long-player Minor White.

The album was released on Bird Records, an offshoot of Finders Keepers run by husband and wife team ‪Jane Weaver and ‪Andy Votel, who'd been thrilled by Tricca's talent (and her Italian leather boots) at the Green Man Festival in 2006. They secured her a show at ‪Jarvis Cocker's Meltdown Festival in London, ensuring international exposure, a major European tour and a run of shows with her old friend Renbourn.

Five years later Tricca released Relic, an album even more poised and precise than its predecessor. Scoring rave reviews across the board – 4 stars in Record Collector and Mojo, 5 in Time Out – the album added gentle percussion and plaintive orchestration to the established pattern of hushed guitar and heartfelt vocals. A collaboration with longtime friend and guitar wizard Jason McNiff led to 2017's sparkling Southern Star EP, while a song on the soundtrack of Patrick Stewart-starring US indie film Match raised her profile. But encouraged by Weaver – who urged her to 'explore the weirdness' in her music – Emma Tricca was hungry for a new challenge.

The road to St Peter began with a chance meeting at South by Southwest between Tricca and producer and musician Jason Victor, and the formation of an instant friendship. During a Skype call one Christmas morning the pair decided to start work on a new project together, hauling in ‪Sonic Youth drummer ‪Steve Shelley and New York bass hero Pete Galub to help Tricca explore the rougher sound that was in her head. Recorded near-live at Echo Canyon West in Hoboken, the album draws on crunchy country rock, homespun psychedelia, Morricone soundtracks, New York underground grit and English folk grandeur to weave a wholly unique and surprising spell.

More musical guests soon joined the party – gruff songwriting hero ‪Howe Gelb put in a brief cameo, while Tricca was able to live out a childhood fantasy by inviting ‪Judy Collins to appear on the album's penultimate cut, Solomon Said. As a teenage folkie Tricca had recorded one of Collins's TV performances onto VHS, and worn the tape out trying to mimic her picking style. Now they were working together, on perhaps the album's most startling, transporting track.

The album is one so loaded with texture that is almost feels tangible, a rare record that feels precise and pristine in its executions but never sterile or lifeless. Electric guitars fizz away like a controlled electricity, Tricca’s guitar playing flows gracefully at the core with her vocals existing in the perfect state between slight rasp and caramel-smoothness. Shelley’s drumming and percussion gives a steady heartbeat to the record which is further brought to life by a variety of deft instrumentation, including piano, bass, cello, violin, glockenspiel and of course the variety of guest backing vocalists.

Whilst St Peter’s deep-seated roots can perhaps be traced to traditional folk music, its finished existence feels far from such a thing - its ever-flowing essence skipping through genres, tones, paces and rhythms with a gliding grace. Perhaps even a touch of the spirit of Hoboken’s own Yo La Tengo has seeped into the finish record in its quiet yet stirring beauty.

Barry says: Moving from haunted demi-melodies and tenderly plucked guitar, imbued with tastefully echoing reverb and Tricca's delicate voice, influenced by decades of classic Americana and folk but sounding like none of the above. Brimming with emotion, and thoroughly enchanting. Superb.

                                                  Bill Callahan

                                                  Gold Record

For his first record in….uh, well, just a little over a year (!), Bill Callahan’s given us his first Gold Record. They can’t all be gold, and they’re not all six years apart either — all good! You could probably call the album “Gold Records,” too: all the songs have a stand-alone feel, like singles, meant for you to have a deep encounter with all of a sudden, from the start of the song to the finish. And what do you got when you have a record full of singles — and let’s face it, hit singles, at that?

That’s a Gold Record for you.

From the top, it’s clear this is music with an affection for people, as Bill immediately slips easily and deeply into his characters. Among them: a limo driver, a watcher of television, a suitor, a man in a broken-down car, a reader of books, a Ry Cooder superfan, and in the closing number, a wanderer who “notices when people notice things”. The voices of the people, with their ups and downs, their loss and laughter. You can feel the love.

For Bill, preparing to tour for Shepherd In a Sheepskin Vest meant considering being away from home for long stretches of time — maybe up to a year, who knew? Feeling his oats, Bill pulled out a few sketches from over the years and touched them up. Before he knew it, he was recording them, and in the shuffle, newer songs started popping up.

It happened fast. Basics were recorded live with Matt Kinsey playing guitars, guitars, guitars and Jaime Zurverza holding it down “and then letting it go” on bass. Drums and horns were brought in for a couple songs. Spirits were high! Six out of the ten were done first take; overdubs, when needed, came equally quickly. Listening, one hears their intuitive cohesion coming together richly behind Bill’s titanic voice spread across the stereo spectrum: the gentle conversation of Bill and Matt’s guitars, the subtle percussion of the bass and drums, and odd appearances of trumpet, woodwind and synth, striking notes both decorous and discordant, sounding for all the world like the naturally occurring sound meant to accompany and express lives lived everywhere.

These are in fact songs meant for other people to sing — but until they do, Bill’s got this. He’s got a secret on this one, and before we go, we don’t mind sharing it with you: he’s figured out how to perfectly place his voice in proximity to your ear. It’s based on the distance from your heart to your brain. Simple! Why don’t more people think like this?

Barry says: It would appear that Mr. Callahan is entering a super productive time in his life, with not one but two records out in the short space of a year. This follows on from 'Sheepskin..' in many ways, with the more languid, minimal moments echoing those from the gorgeous 2019 outing, but with a little more focus on Callahan's (still) spellbinding vocal drawl. Beautiful stuff.

                                                    Grotbags

                                                    Grotbags

When a band proclaims themselves "The Greatest Band in the World" and nobody opposes it then it's probably true. Dipped in Gold Recordings are proud to announce the debut album from everyone’s favourite warm up act, the mighty Grotbags.

Their debut LP showcases the bands precise writing style, which sees guitarist and journeyman Morgan Lane stealing melodies from well-known hits with the band’s ‘Mike Love’ Ben Pitman picking them apart to forge at least some form of verse and chorus from it. Singer Ian Breen pens lyrics based on whatever idiotic thoughts come to mind and their world renowned pop rock sound is fleshed out thanks to the addition of saxophone and synthesizers from Beckie Davies.

This intricate process can be heard on numbers like ‘Big Baby’ where the familiar occurrence of being appalled by your mates overly large offspring is crammed into two minutes and eight seconds of pop perfection.

The album was recorded and mixed in the spring of 2019 at Edge Recording Studio in Cheshire (The Script, James Arthur, Plan B) and mastered at Abbey Road (The Beatles). Totaling twenty two and a half minutes over its ten tracks “GROTBAGS” is a love letter to all things grotty, stuffed with singalong hits covering a vast spectrum of the most important issues in society today.

The world may be going to shit (it’s probably your fault), but Grotbags are here to save us , one song at a time.

                                                      The drummer is called Nick

                                                            Drum

The week we started to write Drum, my relationship ended and I was left alone in a drafty, old house, which belonged to a friend of a friend. I’d been moving around from place to place for eight or nine months at that point, since just after our first album was released. When the band got together that week to write, the first thing that came out was the song “Get Yours.” written in one jam, just this hurricane of noise.

In the house, I sat around with my notebook, the quiet hours cut with news from friends and the TV: the suicides of musicians and writers I’d known and queer kids I hadn’t; the systematic abuse of vulnerable people, the constant mockery of anyone on the outs. I knew what the purpose of the album would be when I wrote the repeated line in “Get Yours”: “There’s none left here and all I need.” I wanted it to be a record of defiance, a resistance to the idea of scrambling for a place at a table that wasn’t set for you. A sort of a love letter to anyone who not only can’t meet the standard but doesn’t want to. I wanted it to be a record of rage and ecstasy and endless nights and sex and dumb fun and ventures in solidarity. Not just an album of urgency and longing, but one of abandon and a reclaiming of a self beyond boundaries.

But I couldn’t avoid what was immediately happening in my life, either, that the end of my relationship had uncovered a lot of the feelings of isolation I experienced growing up. And so it turned out that the album is also personal, and I think is in conversation with queer histories of silence and evasion and transgression, which I was revisiting through the writing of James Baldwin and Cocteau. Childhood imagery kept creeping into the lyrics. Maybe I was trying to come to some peace with the past and to stand up and find some agency in the present. I suppose it was the most defiant thing I could think to do: not to write as some act of catharsis but in an attempt simply to document and claim my existence; that I am here. It seems a worthwhile enough act when our existences are being further and further streamlined, turned into commodities unworthy of protections or acts of humanity, when some weird version of equality and not liberation is now the aim of even the left.

I want to be the author of my words. My words are often still at the mercy of my day-to-day, but I can try to locate them in history and to look beyond myself, too. That’s what I’ve tried to do. The politics and the personal experiences were sticky and came out all tangled up. I couldn’t detach them. I can’t still, maybe because not enough time has passed since making the record, but maybe because those things simply can’t be detached. I suspect that last part is nearest to the truth.

It is comprised of the band's five best, earliest original songs written by Marsh while he was an undergrad of the College of William & Mary in Virginia. It was there that Marsh met Toledo; Marsh a freshman, Toledo a sophomore. Though Toledo won’t be a member going forward, he also plays drums, electric guitar, bass, and backing vocals throughout the EP. Fat Possum will release Gold Connections’ debut album later this year.

An absolute classic! The Stooges debut album sounded like nothing else when it was released in 1969. With a kind of Stones-ey swagger and a heavy dose of garage rock they also embraced the more experimental scene that was flourishing in NYC at the time, led by The Velvet Underground.

Recorded live at Doug Aitken’s Station To Station event and pressed by The Vinyl Factory Press, the 12” features stripped back versions of ‘Greener World’ and ‘Evergreen’, exposing Gold’s spectral, melancholy sound to the elements.

Released in a limited edition of 300, ‘Greener World’ is packaged with artwork inspired by Kevin Bray’s official video.

The Vinyl Factory partnered with American multimedia artist Doug Aitken and the Barbican to bring the acclaimed Station to Station: A 30 Day Happening to the UK for a month-long, building-wide, art intervention in summer 2015.

For the duration of the event, which featured residencies, installations, live performances, workshops, screenings and more, The Vinyl Factory hosted The Vinyl Factory Recording Studio, providing a space for musicians and artists to experiment and improvise with their music. Gold recorded his two acoustic versions within this studio over the course of two days. These recordings were then pressed into a vinyl edition on The Vinyl Factory Press, our on-site manufacturing plant that was showcased at the Barbican exhibition.

Engineered and mixed by Justin Stanley.

                                                                    A-Trak Feat Jamie Lidell

                                                                    We All Fall Down

Fool's Gold head honcho / DJ producer A-Trak hooks up with Warp Records Mr Soul Jamie Lidell for this slice up pop-house uplift. "We All Fall Down" features Lidell's soulful vocals over an upbeat funky house backing with chunky piano chords and hyper 808 percussion. It's the kind of track that I'd actually bother checking out at the gym, and can already imagine the video of festival crowds all jumping in unison during the chorus (in slo-mo, obv.). On the flip is 'Jamie's Version', which has more of an organic feel to it. Hit!

The words and primary voice are those of Jad Fair, that enduringly idiosyncratic artist revered in discerning pockets of the global indie rock underground for decades. Danielson’s Daniel Smith has long admired Fair, drawing inspiration from Half Japanese (the band Fair formed with his brother in the ‘70s) on through to his prolific career today. Their discussions of collaborating finally came to fruition when Joyful Noise Recordings designated Fair its “Artist In Residence” for 2014 and Danielson was tapped as one of 4 artists (including R. Stevie Moore; Teenage Fanclub's Norman Blake; and Strobe Talbot) to record separate respective albums with him for a boxed-set limited release.

“Flattered and honored” is how Smith sums up his feelings about the project -- and grateful to get a game-plan for what always seemed a complementary pairing. Sounds Familyre will be doing their own non-limited release of Solid Gold Heart in June, on CD, digital and gold vinyl. The 11 tracks of sweet collaboration collected under said title sound like what you might expect, given the respective artists: gleaming tunes of sincere sing-speak, resplendent with sparkling back-up vocals and warmly melodic, inventive instrumentation; a sunshine-bright outlook of positive encouragement to keep “rockin’ on the side of gooood” -- because, after all, “We deserve chocolate cake/ We deserve apple pie/ Enjoy your life ...”

The collaborative process commenced with Fair sending Smith his unique vocal demos of recited lyrics with articulated mouthsound musical qualities (some bits remain in the final mixes). Smith then wrote music for each chosen track, eventually getting Fair and drummer Gilles Rieder into his Clarksboro, NJ studio to record their parts during a few hours break from touring. Aside from Smith’s own guitar-playing and singing throughout the album, there were contributions made by his brothers David and Andrew on percussion, and sisters Rachel and Megan along with wife Elin on vocals. Spicing things up at Fair’s behest were members of Texas art-polka band Brave Combo: Carl Finch on accordion and keys; Jeffrey Barnes on sax and woodwinds; and Danny O’Brien on trumpet. Bringing things full-circle was Kramer (Shockabilly, Bongwater, B.A.L.L. et al.) on bass, who also co-mixed and mastered the album.

The result is a beguiling blend that builds off each participant’s strengths, truly a fresh sum that is greater than its parts. “The goal was to make 3-minute pop songs, as accessible and fun and immediate as possible,” notes Smith. And that’s what you’ll hear, each track an uplifting, mutually enhanced concoction. Anyone who ever had a Solid Gold Heart -- wouldn’t they want to turn around and share it? Of course they would. Jad Fair and Danielson are happy to offer up theirs.

Recorded at ARC studios in Omaha and produced by Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, Monsters of Folk), the duo also enlisted The Omaha Symphony Orchestra to play on the record, with arrangements by Nate Walcott (Bright Eyes, Broken Bells, Rilo Kiley). They say of the recording process, “We took new directions and turns with the arrangements, building them up and creating more dynamics, yet always following where the songs wanted to go.”

Alanis Morissette defined the alternative female Pop sound in the ‘90s, with a string of hits under her belt from the million-seller albums Jagged Little Pill (1995) and Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie (1998). In 1999 she performed a selection of personal favourites live at MTV Unplugged, with an emphasis on the non-hit material from the Supposed album. Morissette wanted to prove she’s more than ‘just’ the hits she produced, resulting in her daring step to not perform some of her contemporary hits including “Thank U” and “So Pure”. MTV Unplugged shows a multi-faceted artist, fully grown into her own and strong as ever.

Original vinyl copies are extremely hard to find. To celebrate MTV Unplugged’s reissue, we’re pressing this record in a limited first edition of 1000 gold/red marbled copies. Be quick to snag one of these!

Sullivan & Gold release their new album on Smalltown America, ‘For Foes’ in the UK and Ireland on November 11th, 2013. Sullivan & Gold is the pen name of Adam Montgomery (Bass/Guitar/Vocals) and Ben Robinson (Piano/Guitar/Vocals) who both hail from Co. Derry, Northern Ireland. Their sound is an evocative mix of Laurel Canyon soul and British alt-indie - bold, atmospheric and emotive songs for fans of Bombay Bicycle Club, Iron & Wine and Fleet Foxes.

A lush and sumptuously arranged record, ‘For Foes’ is an ambitious album focusing on a central character, who is reflecting on his life’s loves, losses and betrayals. Each track provokes new questions about the protagonist’s life and each is painted against a memorable, cinematic backdrop - from the beaches of Castlerock to the historic churches of St. Petersburg. Previous fans of Adam and Ben’s work (in indie-rockers The Good Fight) will be familiar with their closely woven harmonies and soulful use of melody. On ‘For Foes’ this is taken to new heights, soaring falsetto and dense backgrounds imbue these songs with an ethereal, otherworldly quality. A deftly realised debut, ‘Foe Foes’ provides a brand new soundtrack for anyone that finds themselves falling in or out of love.

Sullivan & Gold are: Adam Montgomery – Guitar / Bass / Vocals. Ben Robinson – Piano / Guitar / Vocals.

Vancouver-based Gold & Youth write songs tinged with nostalgic desire. Their music evokes memories of neo-noir Los Angeles, cinematic haze and midnight solitudes.

Building off the acclaim for their ‘Time To Kill’ / ‘City Of Quartz’ 7” single, heralded by The Guardian and NME, and a cross-Canada tour supporting Diamond Rings, Gold & Youth will release their debut album ‘Beyond Wilderness’ through Arts & Crafts.

‘Beyond Wilderness’ draws on aesthetics and instrumentation reminiscent of the 1980s. Dark and expansive synthetic textures are punctuated by programmed drums and interwoven with melancholy vocals, detuned synth melodies and understated guitars. The album varies from the cold, industrial sounds of Depeche Mode to the tenderness of ‘Avalon’-era Roxy Music.

The band is comprised of Matthew Lyall, Murray Mckenzie, Jeff Mitchelmore and, most recently, Louise Burns, already well known for her own work as a solo artist, lending her voice to four of the album’s tracks, including the first single ‘Jewel’.

The record was produced by Colin Stewart (Black Mountain, New Pornographers, Dan Mangan) and mixed by Gareth Jones (Depeche Mode, Interpol, Grizzly Bear).

For the sessions, the band expanded to seven pieces, with guitarists Knight and Neal Casal (solo artist and former member of Ryan Adams and The Cardinals), with Dan Horne on pedal steel in place of Scher, who opted to play organ, key, Flying V guitar and electrified melodica. Also lending a hand were Gunst’s wife Jen Cohen, Beachwood Sparks’ very first drummer Jimi Hey, Brent’s brother Darren (leader of The Tyde) and LA indie-rock maestro Ariel Pink. Producer Thom Monahan returned to his familiar spot behind the console.

The world has caught up with Beachwood Sparks since they came out of nowhere in 2000 with their self-titled debut album, bringing new life to what Gram Parsons famously described as “cosmic American music”, and recapturing LA’s laidback but vibrant heyday back in the late 60s and early 70s. At the time, this kind of harmony-rich, irony-free music was rare.

After their second album, 2002’s trippier ‘Once We Were Trees’, and the decidedly offbeat 2003 EP ‘Make The Cowboy Robots Cry’, Beachwood Sparks called it quits. But during the subsequent half decade, the indie music scene began to change with the appearance and wholesale acceptance of multi-voiced throwback groups from Fleet Foxes to Bon Iver to Grizzly Bear.

Songs that dismantle the procedure of life and ask how are people oblivious? Rooted deep in the folk culture of story telling and drawing characters, picking up something new from every stop along the way. Their gift is the music that is melded from all that they have seen and experienced and offers the listener a doorway into a different path. .

Old House Playground are a two piece band based in Manchester UK. Their trail of gigs leads a winding path across europe taking in Manchester, London, Ireland, Greece, Germany and Switzerland with airplay in the UK, Ireland, Greece, Germany, Switzerland and even Romania. Their album God Damn That Gold was recorded to analogue tape by label mate Chris Evans, and will be released on 11th June 2012 through The Evening Economies and Fat Bob Records.

The ‘Solid Gold’ 7” is limited to 500 copies for the world (just 150 for Europe), and is a joint release by The Leaf Label and Hometapes. Pressed on transparent yellow-orange vinyl, it’s packaged with full-colour transparent cover art in a heavy PVC sleeve, and includes a free digital download.

Luke Wyland and Dana Valatka, the Portland, Oregon-based duo known as AU, embody a remarkable, cathartic energy that is immediately apparent on ‘Solid Gold’, the first single to be taken from their forthcoming album. Both Lights will be AU’s first album for The Leaf Label (released by Hometapes outside Europe). Fortifying Valatka’s adrenalised percussion and Wyland’s soaring vocals and multi-tentacled performance on keys / guitar, is man-machine Colin Stetson on alto and bass saxophone. The B-side, ‘Under / Epic’, is a reinterpretation of the album’s opening track, taking Stetson’s wild wind a notch higher and into the brightly lit stratosphere.

AU reflect that light. ‘Solid Gold’ is the first taste of a sweeping aural experience that captures Wyland and Valatka’s journey through three years of love, loss, and levity. “The back and forth, the tug of war for love,” says Wyland, getting at the root of ‘Solid Gold’, in essence a love song, “exhausting, exhilarating, and so totally not sustainable.” Like the best songs, in some way or another, we can all sing along to that.

Introducing New York based, alt. favourite Hesta Prynn. If you haven’t heard her brand of post-hipster-art-pop, you’re about to.

Having spent the past year touring with the likes of 30 Seconds To Mars, Tegan and Sara and Jay-Z and working in studio with everyone from Chuck Brody (Lykki Li, Ra Ra Riot, Wu Tang Clan) to Bear Hands to Clown from Slipknot and Tim Harrington from Les Savy Fav, this former Northern State MC is now set for her first official UK single release, "Turn It Gold".

"Turn It Gold" is an upbeat party track with an indie twist and a hook that just won’t let you be. Hesta (aka Julie Potash) says of the track “I wrote this song about partying in New York with my friends and that song that you just don't want to turn off. The jam that you love. The one you make a gold record in your headphones by playing over and over again”.

“Hesta Prynn is the cool funny alt. superstar you wish presented the news every night” – NME.

                                                                                Starlings

Weight In Gold / Weight In Gold - Inc. Starkey Remix

Sheffield four-piece Starlings – definitely a band to keep under close watch in 2011 - launch their balaeric-indie-funk sound in December with the release of their debut single "Weight In Gold". Influenced by the songwriting and production values of 80s chart greats such as Simple Minds, Heaven 17, and more prominently Talk Talk, Starlings infuse 90s dance bass lines with tripped-out dub guitars and psychedelic choruses from charismatic frontman Justin Robson. The band have already built a loyal fan base in their home city and now look to take their carefully crafted guitars-and-synths sound as far as possible. "Weight In Gold" is Starlings first anthemic step towards etching their name firmly into Sheffield’s great legacy of electronically-informed music, proving that there is more to the city’s musical future than the more traditional rock stylings currently dominant in the slipstream of Arctic Monkeys huge success.

Starlings are much more in touch with the spirit of the city’s electronic post-punk pioneers, using that heritage as a springboard for their sound. Having been taken under the production wing of arch psychonaut and cosmic remix king Richard Norris (The Grid, Time & Space Machine, Beyond The Wizards Sleeve), Starlings’ debut single is perfectly sparse with electronics and trippy guitars creating the ideal platform for Robson’s distinctive vocals to shine. This limited 7” version is backed with a remix by hard edged “Street Bass” maverick producer Starkey – his dubstep-style reinterpretation is already gathering high praise, following his recent work including mixes for Foals, Tempa T and Kano.

                                                                                El-P

                                                                                Weareallgoingtoburn Inhellmegamixxx3

Few artists can combine uncomfortable with catchy; paranoiac with head-nodding; morbid with springy. It's hard to scare the sh!t out of you while simultaneously keeping your foot moving. Rapper, producer and Def Jux founder El-P knows how to get to parts of the brain others can't. As a solo artist and frontman for seminal hip-hop group Company Flow or producer of Cannibal Ox, Cage, Mr. Lif, Aesop Rock, NIN, Beck, The Mars Volta (and many, many more), an El-P production can drive you to hide underneath the bed, punch a wall and nod your head all at the same time. Which brings us to Weareallgointoburninhellmegamixxx3 (Gold Dust, August 3rd 2010), the sort of, kind of but not really follow-up to his past two mixes of the same name previously released at live shows.

It's another unique release in the artist's catalog. In the tradition of Company Flow's Little Johnny From The Hospitul (1998), El's own Collecting The Kid (2005), and more recently "Weareallgoingtoburninhellmeggamixx2" (2007), Hell3 is a fully realized suite of instrumentals that continues to exemplify the producer's versatile, otherworldly, futuristic and wholly original sonic worldview.

Given this format, Hell3 both sounds similar to and nothing like anything you've heard before. "Drunk With a Loaded Pistol" starts off woozy and deranged before evolving into a warning alarm/drum attack. "Time Won't Tell" opens as a soundtrack for the apocalypse followed by the layering of guitar-driven pop over boom-bap drums. As the album title implies, El-P creates a dark, dystopian sonic universe filled with ominous basslines and thumping, punishing drums.

The band now lives in the Eagle Rock district of LA where their album was recorded. Fittingly for such a broad range of lyrical touchstones, the band's musical influences stretch just as wide, taking in everything from "Something Else" era; Kinks to Serge Gainsbourg, New Order, Arthur Russell, Scott Walker, Yo La Tengo and Gilberto Gil. "Calypso Gold" features lush strings and infectious, syncopated percussion for an effect that's wistful and even a little danceable.

"Bodies Of Water" is the debut album from Minneapolis trio Solid Band. Self-released in the States at the end of 2008, the album and the band's singles "Get Over It and "Bible Thumper" - both included here - have been garnering rave reviews across the blogs. "Bodies Of Water" manages to navigate that tricky combination of a indie band sound with more electronic edges really well. The trick is in the song writing, which Solid Band do with aplomb, underpinning layers of warm synth pads and washes, and that 'dancefloor' edge with memorable tunes and rock-solid playing. Like MGMT and Passion Pit, Solid Band are sure to provide dance aficionados with their indie fix, while not frightening the indie kids away with style over substance and no tunes!

                                                                                F**k-Off Machete

Fuck-Off Machete are the latest beautiful new animal born from the fertile Glasgow scene. Quick on the draw and a force to be reckoned with, they formed in 2003 after the demise of bassist & vocalist Natasha Noramlys previous band Ganger (Domino), and began recording their debut album a mere three months after inception. Fuck-Off Machete's music is as strong as it is catchy, displaying a stripped-back and raw three-piece dynamic. Fractious guitars flanked by mighty bass and solid rhythms propel the centrepiece of vocals simultaneously both innocent and commanding. Descriptions such as 'noise-pop' do little to describe the pulverising hooks and seductive stage presence, and references such as Sonic Youth, Polvo, and Joy Division will still leave you unprepared.

                                                                                  Bigfinn

                                                                                  Gold In A Brass Age

This, the bands second CD, comprises of ten diverse songs. Each track is very different in style and mood, but is linked thematically through quirky arrangements and the unique blending of instruments. A blend of hammond organ, pedal steel and strings are prominant throughout with trumpet playing hook lines, nearly as high as the vocals reach some times.

                                                                                    Cannae

                                                                                          Soiled Life

Seattle's Soiled Doves are history - although the group's brief existence in no way reflects its significance in the scheme of things... The band emerged in the late 1990's as new-wave upstarts The Vogue, and by 2001 had mutated (or, rather, condensed) into the 4-piece Soiled Doves. Three of the Four Doves were soon to be members of the critically-acclaimed Chromatics, while vocalist Johnny was on loan from local heroes the Blood Brothers. Soiled Doves released a single on Arizona's collectable King Of The Monsters label, then ventured into Seattle's Paradox studio to record a full-length. Before the album was finished, it was decided that the group would lay itself to rest - Johnny's commitment to The Brothers was compromising his time, and the band were eager to get on with touring, etc. So, after a single West Coast tour in 2001, they had to split. Essential for fans of the Chromatics and Blood Brothers.

This is a mid-price six track mini album that's a powerful introduction to a great new hardcore band.
