About this item

Ian Dewhirst compiles this, the third of four overviews of the UK Northern Soul scene, each CD/LP concentrating on a different club from the era, number three being Highland Rooms at Blackpool Mecca. With the demise of The Golden Torch in 1973, Blackpool Mecca took over as the place to be for Northern Soul fans, with DJs Ian Levine and Colin Curtis spinning more rarities than you could shake an Adidas holdall at, and collectors from all across the country coming to sell and buy obscure 45s. Fans of more than just the up-tempo 'Northern' songs, Levine and Curtis continued the Wheel and Torch's play-list of mixing new soul records in amongst the oldies, favourites and rarities, which by 1975 were turning into disco-soul crossover cuts, creating the 'modern soul' scene along the way.
