About this item
Written almost 40 years ago by the legendary Sister Audrey, "English Girl" was one of the first songs recorded at the then new Ariwa Studios in Gautrey Road in Peckham, and was originally released on Jah Shakas label after the overwhelming response to the track at dances. This release was one of several Shaka / Ariwa partnership releases from the 1980’s and this re-issue is both historical and topical. Now in 2018 the song is re-emerging as the theme of the Windrush Generation, especially with the lyric ‘'now 40 years later, we must go back and get some papers’'. Considered by many to be a true classic of roots reggae.
On the flip, Mad Professor provides a beautifully constructed dub. Slowing down the tempo and taming the energy into something much more relaxed and herb garden based. Part digital and part real instruments, the result is quite otherworldly, thoroughly healing and, to be frank, one of the best dubs I've heard from Mad Professor. This has made my day!
