About this item

Brooding, think, heady jazz here from Black Flower, an ethio-dub-jazz quintet from Belgium described as John Zorn putting on Fela Kuti’s shoes and imbibing Mulatu Astatke’s whirls. There's definitely plenty of the latter's influence jotting about these four tracks - rambunctious passages, with gritty, mystic (baritone?) sax lines and big, weighty upbright bass. The compositions are intricate, well thought out and flawless; as is the playing. RIYL: Pharoah Sanders, Mulatu Astake, Badbadnotgood, Riot Jazz, Yuseff Kamal.

Nathan Daems: Alto, Tenor & Baritone Sax
Jon Birdsong: Cornet
Wouter Haest: Organ & Clavinet
