About this item

Red hot NYC imprint Arcane make it a hatrick this week, following up essential releases from Diamond Jackson and Jamma-Dee with the latest killer from West Coast boogie don Benedek. Operating in the same slanked out vein as contemporaries Moon B and the aforementioned Jamma-Dee, Benedek's been serving his particular brand of sunblushed and stoned machine funk for the likes of PPU since 2011. Where some records burst into life, this deep and sensual sucker opts to stretch the sleep out its limbs, puff the end of last night's joint and take breakfast by the pool. While the mid morning sun lends its O.J. glow to everything around, the synth vox of "Voices" begins to hum along to lazy bass and sampler rhythms, opening a soft focus window on an unknown life of leisure. "Coolin'" raises the heart rate a little, laying dreamy keys over a house tempo drum sequence before the body moving bass groove demands your full attention. The track soon expands with sunblushed synth solos and blazed guitar riffs, laying claim to poolside peaktime or club warm up session. The tempo rises again for A3 cut "Afterglo", a hazy combination of pulsating house bass, hat-led percussion and unconventional instrumentation which totally nails that late 80s oddball house sound. FM brass hits and west coast guitar licks add a fusion feel to proceedings, while the synthesised rhythm section keeps your body moving throughout. Benedek calms things out after that pair of fiesty floor fillers, offering a moment of calm via "Ryukyu", a sunkissed moocher inspired by the tones and textures of Japanese city pop. Subdued Jomox rhythms underpin limber synth bass, delicate chimes, dexterous guitar and classy keys as we sip on this special cocktail by the pool. Things take a turn for the esoteric on the EP closing "Angelus Vista" as the LA producer introduces a cinematic element to proceedings, using that well wrought sound palette to paint an expressionistic fusion masterpiece worthy of any Balearic collection.

Patrick says: LA boogie prince Benedek hits up NYC's Arcane with some undeniably West Coast slank here, working the sampler, synth vox and drum box into a flawless EP. Switching between sunblushed street soul, deepest house and ethereal fusion, this poolside cocktail should keep you faded for daze.
