As per our Top 50 albums review, they've been compiled in A-Z order - you'll have to wait until December to find out the numerical positions in our End Of Year chart.

Doechii

Alligator Bites Never Heal - 2025 Reissue

On Alligator Bites Never Heal, Doechii is equal parts her Tampa roots and Los Angeles, where she’s currently based, she is then and now and also tomorrow, she is countless genres and movements and eras and ideas laid out before us in less than an hour of song. She is the woman on the cover, looking like a stone-faced queen, wearing Vivienne Westwood with beads in her braids and an albino alligator in her lap as if to say, “Did you expect something less?”

The mixtape comes on the heels of Doechii's Eurodance-inspired hit "Alter Ego," dubbed by R&B superstar SZA as "the craziest song I've heard all year." "Alter Ego” received the remix treatment, with JT delivering a verse, further extending Doechii's winning streak. To date, the song has earned over 15 million streams on Spotify alone. Earlier this summer, Doechii released "MPH," where she thrives over a frenetic dance beat. She also partnered with Sprite's Limelight music film to release her melodic single "ROCKET," a song Hypebeast labeled "perfect for the summer."

The Duke Spirit

Cuts Across The Land - 20th Anniversary Edition

'Cuts Across The Land' was the first full-length album from much-loved cult rock band The Duke Spirit - Originally issued on Loog Records in May 2005, it was a huge, critically acclaimed adrenalin-rush of an album that consolidated the group's word-of-mouth success - To commemorate the album's 20th Anniversary, the original album is paired with a new limited LP of B-sides and rarities from the era and is pressed onto two audiophile 180gm LPs: one on yellow splatter vinyl and the other on red vinyl splatter vinyl.

The Duke Spirit was formed in London in 2003 by guitarist Luke Ford (guitar) and vocalist Liela Moss (vocals), who'd met at art college in Cheltenham. Joined by bassist Toby Butler and guitarist Dan Higgins after moving to London, their debut EP, Roll, Spirit, Roll was released on City Rockers that year. It garnered positive reviews, which led ultimately to a contract with Polydor through James Oldham's hip Loog Records imprint.

'Cuts Across The Land' was produced by ex-Cocteau Twin Simon Raymonde and U2 producer Flood, taking the strident vocals of Moss and the chiming guitars of Higgins and Ford to create a dense, exciting sound. Containing five singles, including the UK Top 30 hit, 'Lion Rip', the group offered an exciting mixture of post-punk and heavy rock, creating their own, unique sound. Album standout and live favourite 'Love Is A Unfamiliar Name' typifies their approach.

The Fall

Singles Live - Vol. One 1978-81

Following the successful ‘Slates’ Live! and ‘Grotesque’ Live! releases, Popstock Records is proud to present Singles Live Vol One 1978–81 released via Bella Union. The album documents a particularly important era in The Fall’s history - it begins with the group that recorded the debut album Live At The Witch Trials and ends with the line-up that made Hex Enduction Hour. In between we get a number of interesting variations on these two seminal iterations. As listeners will hear, what is beyond doubt is that whoever took to the stage on any given night The Fall were always witheringly powerful. The versions of the songs presented here are a wonderful addition the group’s canon.

"I have seen the madness in my area" sings Mr Smith on track 4 of this record. That sentence sums up a lot of The Fall's appeal to me: they looked at The North, the place I was brought up in, and saw something alien and inexplicable in it. Not "Gritty Northern Realism" but rather "Snotty Northern Sur-realism". A welcome alternative to all that Hovis advert, brass-band, "Ee by gum", "Last of the Summer Wine" schtick you normally got whenever The North was mentioned in the mass media. According to The Fall, people in the North of England also had dreams and sometimes saw "monsters glowing on the roof" of the local disco and had to deal with City Hobgoblins on a daily basis. This was great news. Incredibly great news for an 18 year-old who had just left school and was on Social Security and was trying to make it in a band, which was quite difficult because the rest of said band had been forced to go to university by their parents. Plus, The North was (pardon my French) completely fucked by 1981: its industries closed down by the Thatcher government, leaving the entire population in a severe state of shock. We needed something new to believe in. A band to believe in.

"We are Northern White Crap that talks back" was another inspirational quote at this time (you can hear it in the introduction to "Psykick Dance Hall" on this record). Because that was what I was aspiring to do: I was attempting to find a voice. Attempting to find out who I could be. Tough job.

The Fall had always been helpful to me in matters like these: Pulp's first mention in the local press, whilst I was still at school, had likened us to "a cross between ABBA and The Fall" (best review ever!), which was encouraging, to say the least. Then I went with my sister to see them at The Leadmill which led to an argument between us as to whether what we had just witnessed was "really" music or not. Never mind that question -- what about all the rest? Are you allowed to be that repetitive? Do all the instruments have to be in tune? Is the singer allowed to hang his jacket on the mic stand if he gets too hot? Yes, no, yes. The Fall provided possibilities. Showed possible escape routes. They said, "Anyone can do this -- as long as you do it your own way". That meant you had to make your own rules and find your own subjects to write songs about amongst the rubble of the newly post-industrial North. Get to work.

This record brings back those days of inspiration and exhilaration. I know these songs by heart even though I never bought a Fall single back then; John Peel always played The Fall releases so I taped them off the radio. Sorry. I'm sure you're familiar with them too. But to hear them live, in the heat of the moment, really brings back the spirit of The Fall. The giddiness and excitement. The palpable hunger to find something new to sing about and believe in. This music never gets old.

The Fall are still the perfect antidote to the "madness in our area". Long may they reign.

Jarvis Cocker, December 2024

Gina X

Greatest Fits

Greatest Fits is a deep dive into the superb sounds of German avant-garde new wave pioneer Gina X on the cult Dark Entries label. This double LP compilation spans the whole of the bold, boundary-blurring career of Gina X Performance, which came together first in 1978 when singer Gina Kikoine and producer Zeus B set out to create "the absolute union of music, poetry and travesty". With selections taken from four albums, you'll find their signature blend of icy electro, camp theatrics and subversive pop throughout, and it all ranges from the pulsing 'Nice Mover' to the decadent 'No G.D.M.' Greatest Fits is both a musical time capsule and a vital reminder of how far ahead Gina X always was while also serving as a celebration of queer culture and synth-driven hedonism.

’Still’ is a compilation album first released in 1981 after the death of Joy Division singer Ian Curtis. Their two previous albums had already cemented the Manchester’s band’s iconic status in music history and ‘Still’ filled in gaps.
It featured previously unreleased studio material, two non-album tracks ‘Dead Souls’ and ‘Glass’ and a live recording of Joy Division’s last ever concert, at Birmingham University. The show included the only live performance of ‘Ceremony’ by the band, who later morphed into New Order and released it as a single.

Loop

Twelves

Formed in South London in the mid-1980s by Robert Hampson, Loop blazed a trail with their potent mix of motorik beats and heavy guitar riffs, recording a trio of brilliant albums that set the indie charts alight before imploding in 1990 after the release of album number three, A Gilded Eternity. As critics enthused at the time, Loop were the sound of Suicide jamming with the Stooges aboard a spaceship built by Hawkwind and piloted by CAN. They were post-psychedelic, pre-shoegaze figureheads in a world of anodyne pop jangle and baggy rhythms, and even their closest contemporaries like Spacemen 3 and My Bloody Valentine didn’t plough such a distinctive furrow as theirs.

First time vinyl pressing of these remastered 12”/EP tracks. Originally released in the 80s / 1990, on the Chapter 22 / Head / Situation 2 labels.

16 Dreams 12” (Head) released 1986
Spinning 7” /12” (Head) released 1987
Collision 7”/12” (Chapter 22) released 1988

Arc-Lite 7”/12”/CD5 (Situation 2) released 1989
Primsma Uber Europa 12” (Beggars) released 1991 (Live Promo only)

Remastered from the original tapes by Kevin Metcalf and then reissued for the first time in 2009 as part of the WORLD IN YOUR EYES 3CD set on Reactor. Now re-mastered for vinyl and re-cut to lacquers by Shawn Joseph /Optimum Mastering and issued as TWELVES. (ref: the 3 x 7” set SEVENS released 2020)

Each side of this 3LP set has one of the 12”s in full, 16 Dreams / Spinning / Collision / Black Sun / Arc-Lite..as well as the promo only LIVE 12” Prisma Uber Europa. The 12” cover of each LP has the relevant sleeve on each side to recreate the original sleeve image, and each 12” side will have labels as close to the original designs as possible.

Hear Loop expand their sound from the Stooges / Velvets / garage pyschout of “16 Dreams”, into the “Spinning” era and then develop their motorik fuzzed-out nihilistic pummel through the “Collision” and “Black Sun” EPs to finish this set with the “Arc-Lite” side, possibly Loop at their most visceral. Unable to be pigeon holed like most bands of this time, their live shows also wiped the floor with everyone as evidenced on the “Prisma Uber Europa” 12”. Not reissued on vinyl when first remastered, now its time. PLAY LOUD

Orbital

Orbital (The Brown Album) - 2025 Reissue

Originally released in 1993, the ‘Brown Album‘ defied expectations and had a significant genre and cultural impact - showcasing the duo's scope and ambition. It was also met with widespread critical acclaim upon release, with NME awarding it 9/10 in their review, and it was chosen as one of Mixmag’s “best albums of all time”. The album's blend of diverse influences and its rejection of conventional norms helped to solidify Orbital's reputation as The Godfathers Of Rave, expanding the horizons of electronic music beyond local DJ nights.

Standout track, ‘Halcyon + On + On’, became an instant classic, known for its ethereal atmosphere and haunting vocal sample from Opus III’s ‘It’s a Fine Day’. The track’s dreamy progression and uplifting yet melancholic tone made it a staple in film soundtracks and DJ sets, embodying the emotional depth electronic music could achieve. The album also includes ‘Impact (The Earth Is Burning)’ - another defining moment, and ‘Lush 3-1’ and ‘Lush 3-2’.

Pains Of Being Pure At Heart

Perfect Right Now: A Slumberland Collection 2008-2010

The Pains of Being Pure At Heart exploded out of the late 00s Brooklyn indie scene with a bright, distinctive sound that paid tribute to everything from C86 to early Slumberland, Sarah and Creation label pop, but with a distinct American flavor drawn from groups like Smashing Pumpkins and The Exploding Hearts. Their 2009 self-titled debut is rightly considered a classic, and with Perfect Right Now we're thrilled to round out the story of The Pains' early years.

The ten tracks here compile the much-loved (and LONG out of print!) b-sides from the 7"s that accompanied that first album, the follow-up Higher Than The Stars EP, a couple of scarce tunes from split singles, and finally "Say No To Love," a spectacular tune that points the way forward to the band's next chapter. There are some proper lost classics here, songs like "Kurt Cobain's Cardigan" and "The Pains of Being Pure at Heart" that still pack the dancefloors at indie discos from Göteborg to Glasgow and we couldn't be more excited to make them available again.

STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: A quintessential part of 00's indie, POBPAH epitomise the glistening post-grunge production and crystalline, playful melodies that were the antithesis to grunge's super serious, thoughtful textures.

The Pale Fountains

The Complete Virgin Years - 2026 Repress

• The Pale Fountains were an English band formed in Liverpool in 1980, and composed of Mick Head, Chris McCaffery, Thomas Whelan, Andy Diagram and Ken Moss.

• Inspired by 1960s music such as Love, Burt Bacharach and The Beatles, the group released their debut single ‘(There's Always) Something on My Mind’ in October 1982. Although the Pale Fountains failed to make much commercial headway, the band would earn critical praise for the two albums released on Virgin, ‘Pacific Street’ (1984) and ‘...From Across the Kitchen Table’ (1985).

This 4-CD box set brings together both albums as well as all the B-Sides, mixes, and some previously unreleased material from the Virgin vaults all housed in a sturdy box with extensive sleeve notes by Classic Pop’s John Earls.

Mick Head – Vocals, Guitar (1981–1987)
Chris McCaffery – Bass Guitar (1981–1987)
Thomas Whelan – Drums (1981–1987)
Andy Diagram – Trumpet (1982–1984)
John Head – Guitar (1984–1987)

Unrest

Perfect Teeth - 30th Anniversary Edition

Bowing out at their creative peak, Perfect Teeth is the wonderful final album by American 90s indie rock greats Unrest. Having just clocked 30 years, 4AD and the band are revisiting it to present the limited, celebratory double album of Perfect Teeth / Extra Teeth; the album remastered plus a bonus disc of EP tracks, singles and rarities.

Borrowing their name from a Henry Cow record, Unrest formed in 1983 at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia (just outside of Washington, D.C.). Beginning as an improv instrumental band, they were soon perfecting genre-hopping eclecticism and issuing recordings (often in cassette form) via frontman Mark Robinson's DIY label TeenBeat, as well as on notable labels such as 4AD, Caroline and Matador.

Their last album, Perfect Teeth features the latter year classic line-up of founding members Mark Robinson and Phil Krauth plus bassist Bridget Cross (a one-time member of Velocity Girl) and was recorded in the Pachyderm Studio in Cannon Falls, MN, in early 1993, mere days after Nirvana completed In Utero in the very same space.

For this reissue, the album and bonus tracks have all been remastered – most from their original analogue tapes – and are sounding as great as ever. Working again with original designer Chris Bigg, he’s kept the original album art as is (complete with Robert Mapplethorpe’s portrait of former Miaow singer/songwriter Cath Carroll on the cover) and has created a brand-new sleeve for Extra Teeth that compliments the original release. This one-time release sees the two albums bundled together with an exclusive 16-page art booklet that includes liner notes by the band.

The Verve

This Is Music: The Singles

Originally released in November 2004 it featured two non-singles, tracks pulled from the sessions for their third album Urban Hymns, ‘This Could Be My Moment’ and ‘Monte Carlo’.

2024 marks the 20th anniversary of the release of an album that has never been pressed on vinyl and, under the group’s direction, this long overdue reissue replaces the bonus tracks with the powerful singles from the band’s 2008 reunion album, Forth – ‘Love is Noise’ and ‘Rather Be’ – as well as including their second single ‘She’s A Superstar’ (1992) in its original, full-length, eight-and-a-half-minute form (rather than the five-minute edit). As such, the album now represents the complete story of The Verve’s singles.

Named after the band’s sixth single, the first issued from their second album, A Northern Soul, it brilliantly documents the potency of The Verve’s relatively short but epoch-making journey through the musical cosmos.

On their emergence (when they were known simply as Verve), they were frequently referred to as purveyors of the shoegaze sound, although their output was more expansive, cinematic and genuinely psychedelic than that description implies, as evidenced by their first three non-album singles/EPs, all of which reached the summit of the UK indie charts.

After splitting up for the first time in 1995, they reconvened (with the addition of guitarist and keyboard player Simon Tong) to reach their commercial peak in 1997 with the hugely successful Urban Hymns, which was centred around a brilliantly accomplished suite of songs written by Ashcroft, including the worldwide smash ‘Bitter Sweet Symphony’, the UK number one ‘The Drugs Don’t Work’ and the beautiful and evocative ‘Lucky Man’.

Combustible, intense and highly influential, this stellar journey is finally available on wax, where, in its definitive form, it easily stands comparison with any other singles collection from the last three decades.

STAFF COMMENTS

Andy says: Three non album early singles make this an extra special collection, for me. Absolutely no one was making the hugely scoped out, psychedelic, shoegaze, groove-laden, wonder- sound that The Verve were coming up with in the early 90s. They were a band right out (there) on their own. Then Richard must've got himself an acoustic guitar (and famously toured with Oasis, in support, no less!) and bingo: enter the land of classic single after classic single. They're all collected on this imperious compilation, and the rest is as they say, history.

Barry says: I mean, you know the singles from Urban Hymns already obviously because they're all stunning and they were on the radio constantly, but do you know the other singles from Northern Soul or Storm In Heaven? I didn't until early last year, and I wish this had been about at the time. A superb greatest hits of a brilliant, genre-spanning act.

Horse Meat Disco Presents: Disco & Boogie From Brazil Vol. 1

13 years in the making, Mr Bongo proudly presents a new compilation of beloved Brazilian disco and boogie finds from the legendary London disco connoisseurs, Horse Meat Disco

A labour of love, it showcases a tantalising cross- section of disco, funk, boogie, samba and MPB, from past to present. Unearthing tracks from the seemingly endless gold mine of Brazilian gems, the compilation features legends such as Jorge Ben, Gretchen, Marcos Valle and Robson Jorge & Lincoln Olivetti, alongside unsung heroes including Ze Carlos and Carlos Bivar.

Over 20 years ago, the Horse Meat Disco crew (James Hillard, Severino Panzetta, Jim Stanton and Luke Howard) began their weekly residency at Eagle London back in 2003. That same year, Luke made his first visit to Brazil, beginning a musical love affair that is still going strong. "I had always wanted to go to Brazil since I was a kid, and when I finally had the opportunity to go with Princess Julia, I was just blown away. I've visited Rio every year since 2003, and in that time, I've learned Portuguese and tried to discover as much as I can about Brazilian music and popular culture. I learned to dance samba with the Paraiso School of Samba in London and paraded three times at Rio Carnival. Brazilian music was a brand- new world for me to explore and get excited about--a whole universe of genius musicians, singers, and styles." 9 years later, Mr Bongo invited Luke down to their Brighton HQ for a listening session of some of his favourite Brazilian boogie and disco 7" finds. A compilation was greenlit, but multiple licensing delays and the release of other HMD compilations meant that it lay dormant for years. Fast forward to 2024, and with the help of esteemed, Rio based record collector Tee Cardaci, along with suggestions from HMD's James Hillard, the dream of an HMD Brazilian compilation finally materialised.

It's a carefully curated collection that includes the electronic-boogie/italo-disco-esque 1984 groover 'Venha (Remix)' by the singer Ze Carlos, two cuts by Luiza Maura taken from her sought- after Deixa Girar 7", and Gretchen's sultry 'Ela Tem Raca, Charme, Talento E Gostosura' written by Jorge Ben. At its core, this compilation captures the excitement and sense of discovery that won over Horse Meat Disco's heart more than 20 years ago.

A vibrant mix of feel-good favours, it homes in on a sun-soaked strand of disco and boogie that has been enriched with the spirit of a nation where music serves as a central pillar of life.

Kneecap (Original Soundtrack)

With a string of glowing reviews and handful of awards already behind it, the Irish-language semi-biopic award-winning film is one of the most-acclaimed movie releases of the year playing in over 500 cinemas across the U.K and Ireland. The film was recently selected by the Irish Film & Television Academy (IFTA) to represent Ireland in the Oscar International Feature Film category having previously scooped the ‘Next Audience Award’ at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and the ‘Audience Award’ at the Galway Film Fleadh in July.

Kneecap (Original Soundtrack) features tracks from the trio themselves alongside Bicep, Fontaines DC, Orbital plus the film’s incidental music composed by Michael ‘Mikey J’ Asante MBE interspersed with snippets of the film’s dialogue. The physical edition is available on double LP (featuring gatefold sleeve and colour vinyl) and CD.

STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: There are few bands that have made as much of an impact as Kneecap have, with their debut album hitting our end of year charts pretty heavily. Here we get the soundtrack to the film, following Kneecap around their scene and their peers and contemporaries. Including Kneecap (obv), Fontaines DC, Bicep and loads more.

Krautrock Eruption

Agree to disagree: A selected Krautrock discography

Krautrock, what is it anyway? A genre, a derogative term, a song by Faust, … or: a welcome (and recurring) opportunity to talk about all of this. The music associated with the term in question has eagerly been canonized. From the enthusiastic and idiosyncratic ramblings of Julian Cope’s 'Krautrocksampler' to encyclopaedic approaches like Alan and Stephen Freeman’s 'Crack in the Cosmic Egg', there are plenty of books to read and lists to discuss: Who’s in, who isn’t? The quarrels and disputes surrounding the terms "Krautrock" and "Kosmische Musik" are a testament to their enduring relevance and fascination. I won’t get into the weeds discussing how to separate one from the other – for all those who do want to, the book 'Krautrock Eruption' by Wolfgang Seidel addresses some of those questions. In this book, you will find an annotated discography of fifty albums. Out of these fifty, we are presenting an even narrower selection of tracks from twelve albums on this compilation. Lists and compilation track listings inevitably see tracks missing and being left out. In our case, the compilation was produced in cooperation with the label Bureau B and therefore has a partial focus on some of their back catalogue. That said, the list is meant to inspire repeated or further listening, to spark discussions and – potentially – to provoke new lists, perhaps your own! It’s all part of the fun. Music is made for enjoyment in the first and for friendly debate in the second place, after all.

Paul Hillery Presents Folk Funk & Trippy Troubadours Vol. 3

Paul Hillery has once again handpicked a must-have compilation of little-known and high-quality tracks for his ongoing 'Folk Funk and Trippy Troubadours' series. This third volume, the first on BBE Music, is an essential companion to Paul's 'Children Of The Sun' trilogy, also released on BBE Music.

Featuring an array of funky folk, jazzy AOR grooves, fuzzed-out lo-fi dub, DIY folktronica, private-press grails and previously unreleased material, Folk Funk and Trippy Troubadours Volume 3 has 22 tracks over triple vinyl and comes with extensive sleeve notes. Includes such gems as the ethereal sound of Sheila Chandra, the euphoric groove of Tim Green, the infectious bass-heavy folk of Dave Smith & Judy Dinning, dreamy Alaskan soft-rock from Soapstone and a West Coast call to enlightened celebration by Rhythm & Bliss. This compilation could soundtrack a cross-continental journey with the music lover sat on a Greyhound bus with earphones on and a battered copy of Kerouac's On The Road. Paul Hillery has curated releases by Will & James Ragar, Forest, and Monica Rypma for BBE Music. Described as an 'enlightened heathen' Paul has shared music via his highly influential Folk Funk and Trippy Troubadours persona on social media for over a decade, cultivating an unerring knack for uncovering rare and lost sounds.

STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Once again, Paul returns to BBE for the follow-up to his previous two Folk Funk compilations, and his superb 'We are The Children Of The Sun' that was one of our favourite compilations in 2023. Wonderfully obscure folky gems, lo-fi funk and heartfelt, organic electronic pieces that lean into Balearic and ambient. Unsurprisingly superb.

Sensitive: An Indie Pop Anthology

Needle Mythology, the label founded by music writer, author and broadcaster Pete Paphides, is thrilled to announce the release of Sensitive, a vinyl anthology to cover the indiepop scene of the 1980s. Sensitive features 30 songs in total by artists who defined the indiepop aesthetic, among them The Jesus & Mary Chain, The Sea Urchins, Primal Scream, The Pastels, Talulah Gosh, Orange Juice, The Field Mice, The Primitives, The Wedding Present, Miaow, Razorcuts, Dolly Mixture, The Bodines, Shop Assistants, The Soup Dragons, The Loft, The Chills, That Petrol Emotion and The Railway Children.

Sensitive takes its name from the single released by The Field Mice, and marks the first time that The Field Mice have allowed one of their songs to be used on a compilation released by any label other than Sarah Records, who released all their records at the time. Also features on Sensitive is Dying Day from Orange Juice’s hugely influential debut album You Can’t Hide Your Love Forever – marking the only time that Edwyn Collins and his wife and manager Grace Maxwell have given permission for an Orange Juice song to be featured on an anthology.

Many of the records featured on Sensitive have become highly sought-after collectors’ items since their original release. The Sea Urchins’ Pristine Christine changes hands for up to £400. Original mint copies of April Showers’ only single Abandon Ship command up to £380. If you were to try and individually buy all the records featuring the songs on Sensitive, you can expect to pay something around £1150.

Sensitive features 10,000 words of extensive track-by-track notes and an essay by Pete Paphides, who was and remains an avid proponent of the indiepop scene that this collection chronicles. All the songs on SENSITIVE have been newly mastered at Abbey Road by Miles Showell.

Strobes In Space (Indie Sleaze, Nu Rave & Future Disco 2000-2009)

Picture the scene, The year 2000 has passed and the new millenium is just getting underway - A new scene explodes onto the nation's Indie Dancefloors - some called it Indie Sleaze, Nu Rave, Future Disco or even Electroclash – ‘Strobes in Space’ takes you back to a time when the Indie kids re-discovered the joys of dancing, raving and having fun at Indie clubs. Day-Glo, Light Sticks, Baggy T-Shirts and Hedonism on the Dance Floors - welcome to Strobes in Space!

When the Indie Dance / Nu Rave scene crashed onto the dancefloors and ignited the youth of the time it seemed like uber cool and incredible new bands were appearing from all corners of the globe almost every day. An explosion of creativity and excitement flooded the clubs and airwaves. From the UK you had bands like Bloc Party, Klaxons, Test Icicles, Playgroup, Simian Mobile Disco. Coming out of NYC you had the likes of LCD Soundsystem, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Fischerspooner. From France you had Phoenix from Versailles and Black Strobe coming out of Paris. DJ / Producer Tiga from Canada, Digitalism from Hamburg Germany, Cut Copy from Melbourne Australia, and from Belgium Soulwax and Goose, and even spreading to South America with CSS coming out of Sao Paolo, Brazil. It really was a global scene.

Two-Piers Records brings you a snapshot of that scene at the time on their latest compilation ‘Strobes in Space’. Spanning across 3 x LPs, 30 tracks and artists. Hopefully it has captured a slice of the excitement and creativity of the time, and this compilation makes you feel joyful, happy and you just want to get Up, Dance and have Fun!

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Two-Piers, legends of the historical curation, return; paying tribute to that embryonic time, when turntables famously outsold guitars, your boyfriend ditched his guitar for a synthesizer, and the smiley face emblem had a 2nd coming. Me and my crew shunned nu rave in 2006 (we were hardcore techno heads you see), but looking back through that rose-tinted lens of nostalgia, you can clearly see the inspired and boundary breaking energies taking place. Not only that, for the first time since '92 it really did unite the tribes. Indie kids started necking pills and die hard ravers started going to gigs! A wonderfully fruitful time, spotlighted brilliantly by Two-Piers here.

Following the success of the 'Tokyo Glow' and 'Funk Tide' sets, Wewantsounds once again teams up with Tokyo-based DJ Notoya for a breezy selection of Funk and Boogie recorded in Japan for King Records in the 70s and 80s. Most tracks here are making their debut on vinyl outside of Japan and the album, like its predecessors, has been designed by Optigram's Manuel Sepulveda and is annotated by DJ Notoya.
