NATIONAL ALBUM DAY RELEASES

ALL AVAILABLE ONLINE

Saturday 19th October was National Album Day.

This year's theme of Great British Groups has already started much heated debate here in the shop as to who should or shouldn't be in there.

Here's a list of the releases that we still have available to purchase online!

Babyshambles

Shotters Nation - National Album Day 2024 Edition

The acclaimed 2007 album reissued on 1LP clear vinyl. Taken from the original 2007 masters when Pete Doherty was at the pinnacle of his creative powers, ‘Shotter’s Nation’ followed in the footsteps 'Down In Albion’, the band’s debut album, and Doherty’s first album outside of his first band - the era-defining Libertines. Both were met with commercial and critical acclaim, breaking into the top 10 of the album charts.

‘Shotter’s Nation’ is unmistakably Doherty. Melodic, stark, catchy, raw, brilliantly unique - his music has always created an unflappable loyalty from his many fans, remaining timeless, yet still sending a nostalgic excitement through its listeners. The album also features four songs co-written by Doherty’s then-girlfriend Kate Moss who also regularly performed live with them.

The approach to the recording and release of the album was an escape from Doherty’s previous methods. Stephen Street (The Smiths, Blur, Morrissey, The Cranberries) took over producer duties from The Clash's Mick Jones, and it was and his first album released by a major label, Parlophone.

A Hard Days Night - National Album Day 2024 Edition

'A Hard Day's Night' is the third studio album by the English rock band the Beatles, released on 10 July 1964 by Parlophone, with side one containing songs from the soundtrack to their film of the same name.

In contrast to the Beatles' first two albums, all 13 tracks on A Hard Day's Night were written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, showcasing the development of their songwriting partnership.

Released for National Album Day 2024 on white vinyl.

      The Chemical Brothers

Exit Planet Dust - National Album Day 2024 Edition

Originally released in the summer of 1995, The Chemical Brothers’ debut album, Exit Planet Dust, remains a key record of the 1990s. Reaching No.9 in the UK, it introduced “big beat” music – as the club-filling mix of hip-hop and acid house had been christened – to a mainstream audience, helping to fuel its dominance on the British dance scene as the 20th century came to a close.

Opening with ‘Leave Home’, the Chems’ debut single and a swift UK Top 20 hit, the album also features collaborations with folktronica icon Beth Orton, on closing cut ‘Alive Alone’, and Charlatans’ frontman, Tim Burgess, on the album’s second single, ‘Life is Sweet’, which took The Chemical Brothers back into the UK charts, hitting No.25 following its September 1995 release.

Amid these standouts is a track that had already become a signature tune for the duo of Ed Simons and Tim Rowlands: ‘Chemical Beats’. Originally issued on the highly collectable Fourteenth Century Sky 12” EP – issued in 1994 under the Chems’ earlier name, The Dust Brothers – it had already become a club classic by the time of Exit Planet Dust’s release, and, 30 years on, it still sounds huge on this 140g red- and gold-coloured double-vinyl reissue.

            Warnings/Promises - National Album Day 2024 Edition

Certified Silver by the BPI, Warnings/Promises was the band’s fourth album and their second to break into the Top 10 following the success of their previous album, The Remote Part. After the release of The Remote Part, the band had a change in personnel with Gavin Fox replacing bassist Bob Fairfoull and touring guitarist Allan Stewart became a permanent member.

Warnings/Promises saw them take a different approach to the writing process, involving the whole band for the first time with a sound that marked a shift towards melodic rock as well as contemporary folk. A more stripped back sound than their previous albums, it featured the singles I Understand It, El Capitan and lead single, Love Steals Us From Loneliness.

              The La's

The La’s - National Album Day 2024 Edition

Among the great British bands celebrated during National Album Day, cult Liverpudlian act The La’s are in a league of their own: unlike all the other groups they share shelf space with this year, they are the sole group to have released only one album. Issued in October 1990, their self-titled debut has been hailed as one of the greatest albums of all time by NME, and was also placed at No.13 in Rolling Stone’s 2021 run-down of the 40 greatest “one-album wonders”.

Selling 300,000 copies in the US and 500,000 copies at home, The La’s has become an indie touchstone. No shortage of that reputation rests on the single ‘There She Goes’, a reissue of which hit No.13 in the UK, on its way towards racking up double-platinum sales figures. With their album now making a return on “coke-bottle green” wax, The La’s have more than secured their place in British music history.

                Mumford & Sons

Sigh No More - National Album Day 2024 Edition

A mere two years on from their formation in London towards the end of 2007, Mumford & Sons released their debut album, Sigh No More. Introducing the group’s signature blend of folk and rock music with heartfelt lyrics and soulful melodies, the album was instrumental in propelling the folk-rock resurgence into the mainstream at the end of the 2000s.

Peaking at No.2 in both the UK and the US, and winning British Album of the Year at the 2011 BRIT Awards, Sigh No More paved the way for a career that has seen the group release three further acclaimed albums, scooping up a second BRIT Award, plus two Grammys and an Ivor Novello, along the way. The group’s lasting impact on the music industry can be traced back to this record – now reissued on ultra-clear vinyl for National Album Day – and its game-changing singles, among them ‘Little Lion Man’ and ‘The Cave’, which have, respectively, reached nearly 45 million and more than 20 million streams this year alone.

Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out! - National Album Day 2024 Edition

Formed in London after a fortuitous meeting between Mick Jagger and Keith Richards on a railway platform at Dartford train station, The Rolling Stones, one of the greatest rock’n’roll bands of all time, released in 1970 a record that is often described as one of the greatest live albums of all time. An exceptional document of the group’s North American tour of November 1969, largely taken from two storming nights at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out! features a set of Stones classics, among them the opening statement of intent, ‘Jumpin’ Jack Flash’, as well as ‘Sympathy For the Devil’, ‘Honky Tonk Women’, a nine-minute ‘Midnight Rambler’ and the high-octane closer, ‘Street Fighting Man’.

Powered by the classic rhythm section of Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman (with Ian Stewart assisting on piano), and with Keith Richards and Mick Taylor trading guitar licks, and Mick Jagger whipping the crowd into a frenzy, Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out! shows just what a tight outfit the Stones had become as they entered the new decade. Following their cover of Chuck Berry’s ‘Little Queenie’, Jagger declares, “Charlie’s good tonight, innee?”, and it is the late drummer who, along with a donkey named Jack, features on the album’s front cover, shot by legendary rock photographer David Bailey. Following its release in September 1970, Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out! would be the first live album to hit No.1 on the UK charts, and to this day it remains one of the most influential live recordings of all time.

Reissued on 180g coloured vinyl for National Album Day, this pressing of the album Includes an archival lithograph print featuring film strips from the concert.

                        Shack

H.M.S. Fable - National Album Day 2024 Edition

One of THE most iconic albums to hail from Merseyside. ‘H.M.S. Fable’ was the third LP released from Shack following 1988’s ‘Zilch’ and 1995’s ‘Waterpistol’. A collection of majestic storytelling in guitar form, written by two extraordinarily talented brothers, Michael & John Head.

Originally released on Laurel Records/London Records in 1999, the band at that time comprised of MICHAEL HEAD - Vocals, Acoustic Guitar JOHN HEAD - Electric Guitar, Vocals REN PARRY- Bass Guitar IAIN TEMPLETON - Drums, Percussion, Backing Vocals.

The album was voted #2 in both NME and Uncut’s critics album of the year polls, only missing out to The Flaming Lips’ ‘The Soft Bulletin’ in both.

Now released on the band’s newly-formed label Shack Songs, ‘H.M.S. Fable’ encompasses many musical styles, from orchestral guitar pop to psychedelic-tinged folk and even elements of Britpop, nicely summed up by the editor of NME Steve Sutherland in a 9/10 review, in June 1999:

‘’Not since Liam Gallagher howled his early indolent disdain has this music sounded so alive. 'Pull Together' is an anthem easily the equal of Oasis at their most loved-up and huge. ‘Comedy' tender and uplifting, like the missing track from 'Bridge Over Troubled Water', 'Daniella' a haunted and exhausted homage to Head's hero Arthur Lee, and 'Lend Some Dough' a rollicking Scouse Play For Today with a chorus that goes, "I've got a sore back and I'm itching’’ ”

                          STAFF COMMENTS

Andy says: Mick Head's major label breakthrough album is an impeccably produced pop record that even caught the tail end of Brit-Pop (though it's nothing of the sort) and garnered across the board praise (for once). It's a brilliant record and this is its first ever time on vinyl. "Is Right!"

                            The Slits

Cut - National Album Day 2024 Edition

Formed in London during the first wave of punk, in 1976, The Slits were all-female firebrands whose influence stretches far beyond music, shaping fashion trends and forcing a wholesale rethink of cultural attitudes towards
women in rock. Mixing African rhythms and Jamaican dub into their unique sonic blend, Ari Up (vocals), Viv Albertine (guitar) and Tessa Pollitt (bass) transcended barriers of all kinds – social, political and musical – inspiring
generations of female musicians to give the finger to the establishment and follow their own paths.

With its DNA traceable in everything from the riot grrrl movement of the 1990s to the music of grunge pioneer Courtney Love, electro-punk agitator Peaches, rapper and activist M.I.A. and returning Arkansas rockers Gossip, The Slits’ seminal debut album, Cut, has lost none of its power. With its densely layered sound providing a backdrop to songs that tackle such unlikely subject matter as shoplifting, consumerism, sexual politics and the commercial exploitation of women, it remains an inspirational album from an era in which women were beginning to take the reins in the creative arts.

Slowdive - National Album Day 2024 Edition

Reunited shoegaze outfit Slowdive spent 2016 in the studio recording their first album in over two decades. The self-titled album followed two years of successful live shows. The band split up in 1995 after being dropped from the Creation label, but achieved cult success in the years between then and 2014, when they reformed. This comeback album was their first since 1995’s 'Pygmalion', which the band never actually toured when it was originally released. The world has finally caught up with Slowdive. The band whose reach goes far beyond just influencing music returned to stardom with their first top 20 record which has gone on to sell 32k to date in the UK.

                                Soul II Soul

Club Classics Vol.1 - National Album Day 2024 Edition

Having started out as a London sound system, Soul II Soul became a bona fide musical collective in 1988, issuing their debut single, ‘Fairplay’, that year and paving the way for unparalleled chart success in both the UK and the US.

Gaining traction in the UK clubs, that single, plus its follow-up, ‘Feel Free’, found Soul II Soul soundtracking the “Second Summer of Love”, and their third single, ‘Keep on Movin’’, finally got people dancing up and down the country as the band’s burgeoning fanbase went overground. Taking the group into the Top 5, ‘Keep on Movin’’ was followed by ‘Back to Life (However Do You Want Me)’, whose infectious groove reached the UK No.1 spot and went Top 5 across the Atlantic. As these singles’ parent album, Club Classics Vol. One, became a UK chart-topper and a US Top 20 (under the name Keep on Movin’), Soul II Soul set the pace for British soul music, inspiring countless homegrown acts that have followed. Marking its 35th anniversary, the album now returns to vinyl in a picture-disc edition featuring the group’s signature Funki Dredd logo.

The album stormed into the charts, peaking at #16 on the UK Albums Chart. The lead single "We Don’t Need Money to Have a Good Time" was a radio favourite, climbing to #12 on the UK Indie Chart and #1 on the UK Physical Singles Chart. Angels With Dirty Faces - National Album Day 2024 Edition

Redrawing pop music’s borders in the early 21st century, London trio Sugababes occupy an important place in the history of British music. Formed in London in 1998, the group seamlessly combined mainstream pop with cutting-edge R&B, soul and dance music – and they added to this intoxicating mix on 2002’s Angels With Dirty Faces, an album which brought avant-garde electronic music to the masses.

This landmark second album from Sugababes includes the era-defining ‘Freak Like Me’, which, helmed by underground producer Richard X, rode a sample of Tubeway Army’s ‘Are “Friends” Electric?’ all the way to the top of the UK charts in the spring of 2002. Led by the guiding hand of the Xenomania production team, ‘Round Round’ repeated the trick, paving the way for Angels With Dirty Faces to clean up that summer, going triple-platinum and scoring Sugababes the 2003 BRIT Award for Best British Dance Act.
