From the coffee bars and basement clubs of the 1960s to today’s grassroots raves, The Clubbers tells the story of Manchester nightlife through the people who lived it.

Across more than thirty first-hand stories, clubbers, DJs, promoters, artists, writers and venue workers recall the places where they found music, friendship, freedom and belonging. Their memories take us from the Twisted Wheel, Pips and the Electric Circus to the Haçienda, Paradise Factory, the Reno, the PSV, Havok, Corbières, Dry Bar, the Gay Village and the new dancefloors being created across Manchester today.

These are stories of Northern Soul, punk, electro, hip-hop, indie, Acid House, techno, jungle, drum and bass and queer club culture. They reveal the overlooked contribution of Black music communities, the changing lives of LGBTQ+ clubbers, and the ordinary people whose energy made Manchester’s venues legendary.

Some found confidence. Some escaped grief, isolation or difficult beginnings. Others built careers, communities and lifelong friendships. Venues closed, scenes changed and generations moved on, but the need to gather around music remained.

The Clubbers places the people on the dancefloor at the centre of Manchester’s music history — because the story of a club was never only about who stood behind the decks. It was also about everyone who turned up, danced and made the room matter.
