The Fall were a post-punk band formed in Manchester in 1976, and for more than 40 years they revolved around their founder and only constant member, the late Mark E. Smith. Originally part of the late-’70s punk scene, the band never stood still musically, constantly shifting direction while retaining a sound that was unmistakably their own. Abrasive guitars, repetitive rhythms, Smith’s distinctive vocals and his often cryptic lyrics became the key ingredients.

They were also incredibly prolific, releasing more than 25 studio albums, with the total running to well over three times that number when live albums and other releases are included. Despite their huge output, The Fall never became major mainstream stars, although they did pick up a handful of minor hit singles in the late 1980s. Instead, they built a fiercely loyal cult following that lasted throughout their career.

One of their biggest champions was BBC DJ John Peel, who supported the band from their early days and famously described them as his favourite group. His perfect summary of The Fall was: “They are always different; they are always the same.”
