Recorded between the mountains of Spain, the neon haze of Boston and broadcast from the streets of Glasgow. This is Gil De Ray’s first vinyl statement since the Rough Trade Album of The Week, “A Riot Of Sound”. Channelling the emotional drama of 60s girl groups, the woozy heat of Exotica and fuzzed‑out Psychedelia, “Awakening Imagination” is a collection of haunted psychedelic pop / torch songs for the doom scroll generation. It sits neatly alongside the surrealist, hypnagogic pop universe of Cindy Lee, but speaks in Gil De Ray’s own voice: a cinematic, late‑night transmission for listeners who want their heartbreak widescreen, distorted and glowing. Written in the shadow of televised genocide and permanent crisis, these songs reflect a world of isolation, frustration and righteous anger. The album was produced and mixed by Michael Hlady of Holiday Music in Boston, USA.
