Jeff Mills
The Bells - The Director's Cut Chapter 6
About this item
Arguably the biggest techno record ever made (potentially rivalled by Joey Beltram's "Energy Flash") "The Bells" is a masterpiece in urgent 909 drum programming, wild relentless energy and spaceage synthesis which, to be quite frank, pisses on 99.9% of other techno records made since its glorious inception back in 1996. Jeff Mills created LOTS of genius music, and much like Lemmy got sick of playing "Ace of Spades" in every live show, Jeff Mills has mentioned a similar quandary with "The Bells" (he still does, however, pander to most audiences by dropping it at least for a little bit during his various DJ sets - what a legend!). Such is the might and impact of this track.
For the "Directors Cut", Jeff bundles the track with a more orchestrated version - "Blue Potential Version" which hints at the more 'space orchestra' direction he would take in more recent years. Finally, we get beatless Martian lullaby - ""The Homosapien Sapiens" full of the producer's trademark, red shifted sonics and otherworldly psychedelia.
Essential stuff and one of those records that every techno head worth their salt needs in their collection. Back in stock for a limited time!
STAFF COMMENTS
Matt says: Just one of those essential techno records. For me the epitome of the genre. Jeff's recently been celebrating 30 years of his iconic Liquid Room mix - making "The Bells" as relavent and as epoch-defining as it was back in 1996. Just gerrit! One of the best records ever made.
