The Martian
Ghostdancer - 2025 Reissue
About this item
Underground Resistance's truly iconic Red Planet series is a collection of Mars-indebted techno records that no lover of Detroit techno should be without. Composed by the illusive The Martian alias - supposedly credited to Will Thomas but often referring to a number of producers working together - the series was described by one Discogs user as: 'Sounds like some brothers from Detroit and a bunch of Native Americans got together and decided they had enough of this world and went off to Mars to form a musical tribe that would beam back their creations to earth in the hopes of enlightening humanity'. It's certainly striking music with a strong audio fingerprint throughout and, considering its origins in 1992, has remained considerably ahead of its time even now.
Originally a double 12", RP6 is now reissued as a single disc release with four tracks taken from the original seven (maybe we'll get the other three on another reissue, we don't know yet). "Medicine Man" is a stripped back, tribal joint that recalls some of the minimal voodoo of fellow Detroiters, Octave One. "The Vanishing Race" pairs drums swung so hard they tumble with flailing synth tones and rising strings. It's a track that could only really emanate from the Red Planet axis.
"Windwalker" sees The Martian nod to Galaxy 2 Galaxy with a spiritual hi-tech jazz number straight from the Detroit techno songbook! Probably the crowning glory of this particular release and one of the more anthemic tracks from the Red Planet cannon - worth the entrance fee alone this one folks!
"The Talking Rocks Of Mars" concludes the 12" with a suitably wigged out exercise in mainframe obliteration. Pummelling kicks, morse code acid, uncomprehensible synth murmurings... it's like your trapped inside the CPU of an alien reactor being chased by those robotic flying drones off Black Mirror.... In a good way of course! :P
STAFF COMMENTS
Matt says: Another key release from the Red Planet - light years ahead of the pack and responsible for creating truly timeless techno artefacts for our record bags.
