About this item

Velvett is Jo Sims and Natali Williams. Together they present a seductive vision of disco and downbeat.

“Femme Fatale” is their first single. Revolving around a wobbly, acidic b-line and electro-disco drums; Natali’s alluring, echo-laden vox soar over the top, reminiscent of a yearning Roisin Murphy or Danielle Moore. Arranged to perfection, there’s a fire inside this track’s belly that’s sure to get any sophisticated dancefloor grooving and moving in the right direction.

James Atkin is tasked with remix duties and he gets to work swapping the bass patch and adding some interesting key changes. Retaining the disco-drums propulsion and teasing vocal parts, it’s a tasty alternative to the OG and just as playable.

On the flip, “Closer” explores exotic downbeat moods, including more lyricism from Natali and perhaps showcasing more of her background as a jazz singer. There’s a self explanatory dub mix of said track plus a ‘Twisted DnB Mix’ which takes us back to the halcyon days of Grand Central and bands like Gotan Project – a live-feeling, organic twist on the instrumental stems which ratchets up the tempo and accentuates the bass!

Absolutely killer debut release from Velvett here with two unmissable electro-disco tracks, a dubby downbeat number and a final flurry of drum and bass. Do not sleep!

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Unmissable EP showcasing the seductive delights of Jo Sims and Natali Williams. The A-side's won me over thus far, with a striking electronic disco joint which hits me with the same impact as Valarie Allington's "Stop".
Plenty of backroom fun to be had on side B too - it's a full package alright! Currently limited to a very select number of shops too - just saying! ;)
