Taana Gardner
Heartbeat - Larry Levan Mixes
About this item
With disco's death knell ringing loudly in his ears, Larry Levan took what had become a coke-fuelled Uptown pop fest back Downtown, back underground and back down the BPMs, incorporating slower post-disco numbers in his sets at the Paradise Garage. At 9.34 minutes long his club version of Taana Gardner's 'Heartbeat' became a benchmark release for boogie-disco. Originally released in 1981 on New York's West End imprint, the track opens with a heartbeat-like double bump of bass drum before getting down in a never-ending groove of hand claps, fluid bass, floating synths and funky rhythm guitar. New Jersey native Gardner ices the cake with a soulful, lung-busting vocal.
This re-release has been digitally remastered for 2015 and released in conjunction with the West End rights holders.
