Welcome to the Piccadilly Records End Of Year Top 100. In an era when sales of old music now outstrip that of new releases, we’re proud to keep flying the flag for new discoveries – I’m sure you’ll find something in here that’s just right for you. Remember folks, everything in our charts comes with the Piccadilly seal of approval, so it’s always worth taking a punt on one of our recommendations!
Taking our 2012 Top 100 chart by storm is the Goat “World Music” album, a perfect Piccadilly mix of psych, post-punk, afro-punk-funk and oddball disco – a riot of shouty-but-tuneful tracks.
Elsewhere amongst the Top 20 other psych favourites include White Manna, Moon Duo and Pretty Lightning. Flying the flag for folk are First Aid Kit, whose beautiful harmonies made our hearts sing, and Smoke Fairies (ditto). For hum-along catchiness you can’t beat Django Django or Friends, while Chromatics provide a melancholic counterpoint, with Grimes sitting somewhere in between. Big indie hitters include Grizzly Bear (epic), Toy (hypnotic), Sharon Van Etten (intimate), Crocodiles (edgy) and Spiritualized (spacey), with Richard Hawley also coming good with a guitar-based long player. If you want something a bit more electronic the krautronic sounds of Loops Of Your Heart will fit the bill, or you can lose yourselves in the tripped-out dub weirdness of Sun Araw, M. Geddes Gengras, And The Congos or Peaking Lights. Last but least for the top 20, Godspeed You! Black Emperor make a triumphant return with a full on wave of sprawling avant rock epics.
