Around the latter part of 2008 a certain Bristolian figure, best known now as Joker, made a relatively innocent comment about his sound being best described - not as dubstep - but as 'Purple' or 'Purple WoW'. Along with his production cohorts Gemmy and Guido the trio soon became known as the 'Purple Trinity'.

The three producers injected a lively melodic element to dubstep - twisting the beats into an aqua crunk framework, blending the best elements of dubstep, bass and dancefloor aesthetics with crunked out hip hop flavours, 80s synth sounds and - most importantly - melodic hooks that get stuck in your head for weeks.

This compilation charts the course of the 'Purple' sound over the last 5 years highlighting key tracks in it's history - focusing on Joker, Gemmy and Guido's output - but also featuring the likes of Rustie, Ginz, Mensah, Baobinga and L-Wiz either in collaborative guises or producing solo. This is the essential 'Purple WoW' compilation - anything else out there is a weak imitation.
