ABOUT THIS ITEM
Funk music as a style began to emerge out of rhythm and blues in the mid 60s. As James Brown pioneered this new style in New york, other groups from round the US emerged with their own slant on the sound, none more so than in New Orleans. This southern city's already unique fusion of traditional African ritual music with jazz was then assimilated into the new funk sound. Originally released in 2000, Soul Jazz reissue this definitive collection of New Orleans funk featuring acknowledged masters of the genre (The Meters, Eddie Bo, Professor Longhair) next to some of the earlier artists who shaped the meaning of the word funk. The album is also filled with many rare, sought after and undiscovered tracks. It covers the period from the emergence of New Orleans funk in the early 1960s through to the mid 1970s. For those in any way interested in funk this record is an essential part of anyone's record collection.
