After a few releases that seemed to just sit within the C2 template, Carl Craig is back with an absolute epic for Honest Jon's, the latest in the label's series of remixes of tracks from Tony Allen's "Lagos No Shaking" LP. His rework of "Kilode" opens with Allen's Afro-beat drumming, before Yoruba soul woman Yinka Davies' passionate soul vocals are added. A nervy, urgent one finger key riff keeps the tension building until a spoken African vocal appears and the kick drum kicks in, followed by a wicked synth bassline and filtered funky guitar lick from the original track. Epic and apocalyptic, kicking hard and funky as anything, this is one of the Planet E man's best mixes to date. As a bonus you also get Craig's 'Straight' mix, which sticks to an Afro-beat style, fattening things up a bit, and the original itself.
