On their second album, "Back To The Future" The Young Playthings have stripped the sonic sweeteners of "Who Invented Love" back to its bare bones and charged out a heavier, darker set of songs. Having ventured outside of the UK for gigs and radio sessions in Spain and Ireland in 2008, as well as gigging with acts such as Blood Red Shoes over the last few years, the band has grown as a unit. Enlisting the help of engineer Michael Page, the Playthings produced "Back To The Future" themselves and the result is in the Steve Albini realm of documenting simply what's there and making each part as vital as possible. Ironically, this is as sonically accessible and polished as any major label release you'll hear this year – it's gritty but playful, and the Playthings' trademark life-affirming melodies are clearly in focus. At its core "Back To The Future" is a pop album with a punk rock heart.
