ABOUT THIS ITEM

Formed in Brazil circa 1965 / 1966, Os Mutantes were made up of Arnaldo Baptista, Rita Lee and Arnaldo's younger brother Sergio, who was just 15. Influenced by global pop like The Beatles and Motown soul they set about making their own unique music. Discovered by maestro Rogério Duprat (a follower of John Cage's avante-garde ideas), the trio was then introduced to singer / songwriter Gilberto Gil at the TV Records' second Festival of Brazilian Popular Music in 1967. Hated by the University crowd at the contest, the trio along with Duprat and Gil plus composer Tom Zé, singers Gal Costa and Nara Leão and lyricists Capinam and Torquato Neto instead formed a new anti-establishment art / music movement, Tropicalia. It was during the movement's first weeks of discussion that Os Mutantes recorded this, their self-titled debut album, released in 1968. An incredibly catchy mix of post "Sgt. Pepper", post-Byrds psychedelic pop, Brazilian rhythms, oddball humour and experimental electronics, "Os Mutantes" still sounds totally fresh today. Essential!
