A producer with an incredible work rate, Parisian beatsmith Onra first appeared on the All City Dublin label in 2008. Probably best known for 2007’s "Chinoiseries", an album created from Vietnamese found sounds after some extensive rifling through dusty crates, he's sure to reach a much wider audience with brilliant new long player "Long Distance". While this new LP may have similar foundations to "Chinoiseries" - sampling old dusty vinyl - "Long Distance" is a giant leap forward. Here Onra pays a personal homage to the R&B, modern soul and boogie sounds of the early 80s, creating some actual songs, as well as the usual best cuts. 21 tracks in all - a mix of instrumentals and vocals - this LP resists being pigeonholed, being neither straight-up beat-based hip hop nor needlessly wonky low-end fonk, but navigating a path between the two, bringing melodic electro-boogie into the picture along the way. Characterised by finely crafted songs with high production values, "Long Distance" features vocal contributions from T3 of Slum Village on "The One", Olivier DaySoul fresh from Hudson Mohawke’s "Butter" LP is on two tracks, and Reggie B guests on "High Hopes", while French soul-jazz keys player Buddy Sativa and Walter Mecca also appear.
