ABOUT THIS ITEM
OK skankers and ravers, something to get excited about. A new label from WerkDisc's Lone kicks off in super massive form from the man himself (who if you remember, dropped some amazingly dreamy, drunkard psychedelic hip-hop at the end of '09 / beginning of this year). Using that '92 hardcore breaks template that Zomby and others have touched upon, "Pineapple Crush" drops into a large rave piano riff early on, but staggers and sways with Lone's drunkard production. When the drums drop it's that well used rave break - 'the Lyn Colllins - Think (About It) break' that you'll instantly recognize as being used, not exclusively, by Fatman Scoop and many others (that and the 'amen break' being two of the most sampled drum breaks in rave history, pop pickers...). It's a massive drop and definitely gonna blow the visors off all those spandex clad raver kids down at Hit And Run or wherever it is they go to these days. Just when you thought it couldn't get any more massive, a beautifully flourescent, ecstatic synth line cruises right through the mix, sending euphoria levels soaring and infusing you with delicious electricity. "Angel Brain" sticks to the same formula, again with a delightfully catchy rave riff early on. The drums this time are a bit more Detroit / Chicago than UK rave, utilizing the Roland drum boxes and full of sizzling hi-hats. Just like the previous track, we're treated to some highly blissful synth work which really does make my hairs stand on end. Again, there's more treats towards the end of the track (so many producers seem to stick to just one loop these days) as the arrangement evolves into another huge retro breakdown (you know, the type where you have to look around and catch your breath as ecstasy courses to the ends of your arms). Reinventing rave?! Who would have thought it possible? And certainly not with all this mephadrone knocking around. In a DJ box in some small nightclub somewhere in Britain however, Lone is re-writing the formula, one big hook at a time. And for that we must thank him.
