ABOUT THIS ITEM

The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble are eight brothers from the south side of Chicago, all sons of the Sun Ra trumpeter Philip Cohran - a street-marching brass band in the New Orleans tradition; jazz to dance to, with a funk sensibility honed by hip hop. Here are two scorchers from their imminent Honest Jon's album. Written by Philip Cohran in memory of Alyo Tolbert, star dancer for the Montu Dance Company in Chicago, "Alyo" is the album's hardest, funkiest track (featuring Malcolm Catto from The Heliocentrics on drums); and in memory of the band's friend and rabblerouser, Flipside Freddie, the flip's "Flipside" wobbles and woozes, tippy-toes and pirouettes, with the spirit of Mingus in its gait.
