STAFF COMMENTS

Philippa says: Listening to Friends’ debut album "Manifest!" you instantly realise the band could only come from New York, and even if they didn’t, you’d still swear they had to have some connection to the Big Apple – they just ooze NY cool. The Brooklyn quintet’s sound draws together loose, percussive disco-not-disco, lo-fi funk and ‘60s girl group pop. And while they might not have the avant-garde experimentation of punk-funk originators Liquid Liquid, or the muscular dancefloor appeal of the Rapture and LCD Soundsystem, they make up for it with a handy knack for a pop hook - tracks like "Friend Crush" and "I'm His Girl" will have you humming along in no time. Not every album you buy has to have weight, meaning and depth, there’s always room in your record collection for a bit of bright and breezy indie-disco-pop. Think Tina Weymouth’s Tom Tom Club rather than David Byrne’s Talking Heads.

ABOUT THIS ITEM

After blazing out of Bushwick in 2011 with the two buzz-worthy singles, “I’m His Girl” and “Friend Crush”, a reputation for turning live gigs into spontaneous DIY parties (and vice versa), and a bio built to withstand the most cynical indie-blog cred-vetting – Brooklyn’s Friends release their debut album 'Manifest!'.

Produced by the band, its twelve tracks were recorded between last summer and this spring with engineer Daniel Schlett at Strange Weather studios in Brooklyn.

Forthcoming single, and the album’s climax, “Mind Control”, has been mixed by Paul Epworth, and it sums up the seditious streak of 'Manifest!' The musical choices are brazen even by Friends’ standards: superfly bass, slinky synth, crybaby wah, bongo solo, group chants. And with “Mind Control” already anointed the Hottest Record in the World by the Zane Lowe show on Radio 1, the band’s Spring tour close to selling out and more shows to come in the Summer, Friends look set to make the rest of the year theirs alone.
