"Candlepower" is the fourth release from Champion Kickboxer on Thee SPC and sees the Sheffield four piece building substantially on the textures of their great 2006 album "Perforations". This EP, which features five tracks, was recorded in Sheffield by Alan Smyth and mixed by the legendary Kramer. All five tracks are wonderful psyche-tinged pop, but with varying ratio's of psyche and pop! The opening track on side one, "Clouds" is an up beat song full cascading rhythms and sweet harmonies, "Hole" has the same Super Furries-esque harmonies, but is much more intense. The closing track on the A-side, "Photo" is probably the mellowest on the EP, starting off all dreamy it builds to a mini crescendo at the end. On the flip, "Master Of Dancing" has a see-sawing vocal over choppy drums and layered vocal harmonies. And finally, closing track "Ice Cubes" weighs in at five minutes plus and again employs sweet vocal harmonies, this time over sparkling keyboard rhythms, heavy bass and crunching guitars.
