Janek Van Laak

Circle Of Madness

Berlin based drummer, composer and producer Janek van Laak was born in the fashion-fuelled metropolis of Düsseldorf in 1995, and briefly spent time as a toddler in the music loving municipality of Leipzig before settling in the country’s capital in 1998 whilst it was in the midst of its post Berlin Wall cultural explosion.

Under the influence of his punk loving father and cabaret / comedy performing mother, Janek moved from singing in his school choir to learning to play drums and piano. Now, as well as producing music under his own name, Janek is also one of the founding members of the Neukölln based outfit Liquid Brain Orchestra, and one half of off-kilter duo Tutu Amuse with guitarist, vocalist and actor Rosa Landers.

Janek’s debut solo album “Circle Of Madness” is a record that is best described by himself as a snapshot of “something at some point” and encourages the listener to “stay curious while trying to maintain a balanced and non toxic relationship with perfectionism on this discovery of new land through music, channelling self expression and learning”.

The album opener “a little GOLD” encourages all of those feelings with delicate synths and percussion making way for fuzzy guitars and wordless vocals that anticipate the wide ranging, diverse and experimental sounds to follow.

“Here To Slay” is something of a statement of intent and features the rasping, bold vocals of Australian artist Madeleine Rose to great effect. The horn section takes centre stage on the sinister “Saints Blow” which, like the percussive frenzy of “Daiamondo”, which highlights the voice of Japanese singer and multi-instrumentalist Shiomi Kawaguchi, was a track originally sketched for the Tutu Amuse and Liquid Brain Orchestra projects respectively. On other tracks, Janek takes on lead vocals himself, such as the evocative “Above Your Head” with its almost Latin feel.

Elsewhere, the instrumentation tells the story with Janek’s drums vying for attention against percussion, horns and electronics on “Sloppy Dreams” and “Left 4 Dead” and there are sweeter, softer moments too such as on the shimmering “Glintstones”, the guitar led “The Last Stylebender” and the moody “Garlic Brown Junior”. And then there are the singles. The Afro-jazz inflected “The Killah Gorilla” - a piece that takes its name from the U.S. Ultimate Fighting Championship Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) professional, Jared ‘The Killa Gorilla’ Cannonier; and “OCTAPUSSY” - a ten minute epic that begins with a delicate interplay between dreamy keys and drum rolls which are then joined by silky guitars to create an effortless modern fusion sound.

With “Circle Of Madness”, Janek intends to continually push musical boundaries and possibilities. Look out for him on the road, pushing those boundaries with his upcoming live shows.

    The KBCS / Shirley Turner

I Wish You A World Of Happiness

Sonar Kollektiv are very proud to present a sweet slice of obscure Philly soul with deep connections to our very own Berlin family. Shirley Turner’s 1965 recording of I Wish You A World Of Happiness has long been a crate digger’s delight and now receives a very special reissue, alongside a rather stunning cover version from Hamburg based quartet, The KBCS, featuring the vocal talents of Nora Becker.

      The KBCS

      Color Box

The KBCS represent the musical coming together of four very uniquely gifted, but very complementary, instrumentalists from Hamburg, Germany. Color Box, their sophomore LP, happened almost by accident, born as it was out of a series of freestyle jams.

The album kicks off with three instrumental openers - the first of which, Popsicles, is best described by the band them- selves as “a late summer teenage adventure”. Hazy guitars and warm keys playfully amuse each other over a solid, funky beat on what is an evocative and vivid introduction to this talented foursome. It’s followed by Whistleblowers, a sweet and somewhat whimsical piece where another sturdy bottom end allows keys and strings to enjoy some lively interplay, and Jolly Tumbleweed which, with its optimistic yet melancholic feel, completes the trio of warm, hazy psychedelic grooves to ease you into an album that circumnavigates 360 degrees of soulful music.

Adding some garnish to this rhythmic stew are an impressive collection of special guests. Berlin based, and internationally adored vocalist Olivier St. Louis sprinkles a little Cali sweetness with the head nodding Pockets - one of the most immediate and soulful cuts on the album. A guaranteed ear worm, bringing a little sunshine to the winter months to come.

Elsewhere, multi-talented Nigerian singer Nneka lends her distinctive voice to the very succinct but powerful Afro-soul of Ndidi; the enigmatic Lui Hill lays his soul bare with honesty and candor on the alluring Albatross; Tel Aviv born J. Lamotta gives The Center a somewhat delicate and fragile dimension that plays perfectly alongside graceful guitars and contrasts with a sturdy backbeat of bass and drum; and Viviane Ann, AKA Bowie, smooths out the rough edges on the very radio friendly Wasting All Your Lovin’.
This is indeed music from the heart; a document of their coming together; and music that needs to be heard live!

Pete Josef‘s second album "I Rise With The Birds" gets remixed by Sonar Kollektiv main crew.

First of all there is the Jazzanova remix of "Giants", which almost completely trades of the vocals for a beautifully rich and tantalizing array of synths; powering the whole beast forward with an expertly sequenced breakbeat. Feiertag remixes the same track, leading with swelling horns soaked in dub delay, rising keys and guitar notes picked from the ether add the the urgence self of elation as this pours outta the speakers - tidy!

Livepool's Friend Within brings some tasty soulful house flavours thru the stems of "Mainframe". While Pete Josef himself strips down "The Sun" to its basic structure before reconstructing it as a modern Salsa track! Mega!

        TRACK LISTING

        A1 – Giants (Jazzanova Remix)
        A2 – Giants (Feiertag Remix)
AA1 – Mainframe (Friend Within Remix)
AA2 – This Sun (Pete Josef Remix)

The multi-faceted artist & producer Feiertag has established himself as a leading name within the electronic music sphere since making his debut in 2015. He defies convention in ways many cannot, from his immersive productions on Last Night On Earth, Boogie Angst, Majestic Casual and Kitsuné. After two successful EPs and even more singles, Feiertag took his time for this debut album. This can be heard on each of the sixteen tracks: Extraordinary attention to detail, sophisticated arrangements and a sound aesthetic that couldn‘t sound more modern are probably the first impressions you take away from "Time To Recover". On second or third listen through, however, you realize that almost every one of these songs has hit potential somehow.

After the dubby head-nodding opener "Stranger To One" follows "Yearn", with Oli Hannaford from London and Tessa Rose Jackson from Amsterdam, revealing a melancholic and shimmering musical soundscape. Majestic vocals combine with lush percussive elements and smooth drums, whilst rich chords work atop of resonant strings. A song destined for eternity!

Tessa is also featured on "Follow" and "Riptide". Then there‘s the collaboration with GOSTO, "Stronger", a song that gains in punch and impact with each successive listen. And with every rewind, you turn up the volume a little more. As loud as enough that you can also enjoy "It‘s Alright" with James Alexander Bright in its full glory and exuberant optimism. Similarly good-humored is the instrumental "Saccharine" tasting full of sweet summer, unbridled exuberance and outdoor parties.

With "Panorama" Feiertag shows his calmer, more ambient side towards the end of the album to finally set an absolutely dignified closing point together with Pete Josef on "Where Are We Now". "Time To Recover" is an almost furious ride through current musical styles and genres - all from the artful and almost grandiose orchestrated point of view of Feiertag.

From the left or the right side? Straight ahead or upside down? No matter how you look at it - but it seems to be about time that all the remixes for Jazzanova that have been done over the last few years need to be bundled up in a nice big shiny package.

After the first collection of remixes from 2003 now's the turn for "Upside Down", some of dance music finest key figures' interpretations of selected Jazzanova tunes from the last eight years. And be assured, the line-up is as massive as the Berlin's quintet worldwide reputation. From fellow Berliner Henrik Schwarz, Ye:Solar and Âme to Atjazz and Mr. Scruff from the UK, Motor City Drum Ensemble from Cologne, Glasgow's Midnight Mauraders and Soldiers Of House from Pretoria (South Africa) this is a top notch international heavy weight affair.

Inspired by these outstanding reworks of their original material Jazzanova member and DJ Alex Barck and Jazzanova Live! band member Stefan Ulrich (under his Neve Naive moniker together with Alexa Voss on vocals) also got upside down and delivered each a remix to this prosperous project. Besides these two brand new and unreleased remixes the ones by Soldiers Of House and Midnight Mauraders are as well first time available to the public.

Both acts are ones to keep an eye on. Pretoria twosome Soldiers Of House started releasing music in 2005 before founding their own label Soldiers Of House Entertainment in 2008. When participating in a Jazzanova remix competition in 2009 and making it second they did not only caught the attention of Jazzanova / Sonar Kollektiv but kick started their career into newer heights. Their remix of "Lie“ is another promise of things to come. Also a duo, The Midnight Marauders (Ali Herron and Ross Telford ) hail from Glasgow and have caused ruckus with their solo work as OOFT! and Ross' DJ residency at the UK’s longest running weekly house night Subculture at the Sub Club. More remixes and original material is expected in the very near future.

        Secret Love 3

Together with their buddy Resoul, who runs the Berlin record store Soultrade and True Beatz Collektive, Jazzanova have again searched out undiscovered jems (and some well known favourites) of the nu-folk / downbeat / melodic electronica / all things mellow scene. The goal of this compilation is by no means to solve the puzzle of what is meant by the term 'folk', it's much more about bringing together the music that many DJs hear removed from the dancefloor. Featuring unreleased, exclusive and previously vinyl-only tracks, the album includes contributions from Pola, Thief, Ninja Tune's Fink with an exclusive track, Max & Harvey, current Piccadilly faves Tunng, Fujiya & Miyagi and The Beauty Room, Clara Hill (exclusive to this release), Jose Gonzalez, Hanne Hukkelberg and Donna Regina.
